wow!! I discovered a new (to me) department store in Houston! I searched around HAIF and there was only 2 or 3 mentions over the past 15 years. Figured I would create an official thread so people can gain more knowledge about the company. In terms of the company name, and searching around the internet, the name was spelled many ways. Levy Brothers Department Store Levy Bros. Department Store Levy Brothers Dry Goods Company Levy Brothers Dry Goods Co. Levy Bros. Dry Goods Co. Levy Brothers Company Looks like the official wording, per company letterhead and invoices, was Levy Bros. Dry Goods Co. From an invoice dated December 12, 1952: Several online Houston history blogs indicate the address was 309 Main Street. The 1907 Sanborn Houston map had the company surrounding the addresses 309, 311, and 313 Main Street. I searched through old newspapers for both 309 and 313 Main Street and did not find any information containing Levy Bros. When searching for 311 Main, I got results. From the newspaper The Houston Post. dated March 8, 1914: Department Stores Dexter, Fred F. 230 W. Seventeenth Ave., H. Hts. Taylor 205 Levy Bros., 311 Main. Preston 36 Munn Co., W.C., Travis St. Capitol Ave. and Main St. Preston 218; A1131. The Houston Post. dated June 24, 1914: J.B. Westover, Adv. Mgr. Levy Bros. Dry Goods Co. Dry Goods and Women's Furnish'gs 311 Main St. Phone P675 From a 1907 Sanborn Houston map: A photo of the Levy Bros. Dry Goods Co. building at 311 Main Street.

Learned something new today! Joseph Finger designed a Battelstein's Department Store in Montrose located at 2010 South Shepherd Drive. Very cool!! I wasn't aware of this store. From the newspaper The Bellaire Texan dated May 6, 1964: Now Available at Battelstein's The Amazing New Finnish Sauna Portable Sauna Bath Have a Beauty SPA in your own home for pennies a day! It cleanses the body, relaxes tension, offers much pleasure and well being. Battelstein's 2010 South Shepherd Interior photo I found online: Interior of Battlestein’s Department Store, 2010 South Shepherd, ca. 1950. This suburban Battlestein’s was designed by Joseph Finger who also designed earlier downtown incarnations of Battlestein’s. The store’s interior was reminiscent of Foley’s Department Store, which opened in 1947.

Alfred C. Finn designed this proposed "Name Here Department Store" in the 1920s. Alfred Finn’s office prepared this rendering in the 1920s for a massive, but ornately designed, department store. The tile work along the eaves suggests that this store would have been another addition to the many Mediterranean style buildings that were constructed in Houston during this time period. Had several proposed Mediterranean-style buildings actually been completed during the 1920s, it would have helped to produce a more uniform architectural style throughout the city.

The diamond cut stainless steel cladding on the portico has been removed and is being replaced. This building, which is the undisputed heavyweight champion of ugly exteriors facades in the entire Main Street Market Square entertainment district, was previously Club Heat and Club Spade's. This is the final remaining retail space on the east side of the 500 block, and if it is indeed being worked on would leave only three spaces left on Main without a known active project.

Hi, I've noticed that Willowbrook Mall recently tore down what used to be Lord & Taylor. There's a sign that reads "FUTURE COURT." Does anyone know what Future Court is or will be? Please reply.....

Old CVS at the corner of Main and Kirby is up for demolition. This is going to be a Chick-Fil-A, seems like a prime spot for something larger than a fast food chain, especially since there's already a Chick-fil-A a mile up the road.

This thread was originally created January 20, 2016. I'm reposting / reupping this because this post and other content from me are no longer available on the forum. An archive link will be posted soon. Mods, please don't move this to the Heights forum where all of my Washington Corridor posts were moved to. Mods, also don't sneak and move this thread and all the others for Washington Corridor, Oak Forest, Garden Oaks, and Independence Heights to the Heights forum once all the previous content is reposted as y'all have done in the last two weeks and continue to do. This is NOT in the Heights and it's not part of the Greater Heights area in any way. This is in the Washington Corridor area, an area that as suggested and advocated for previously needs its own forum because there is lots of development happening here, much spurred by the Sawyer Yards and Buffalo Heights developments. That in itself usually merits the creation for a new neighborhood forum. Until then, posts for those neighborhoods should remain in the forum for "Other Neighbohoods" has is done with other threads that don't have a dedicated neighborhood or area of town forum.Thanks. Once home to Guadalajara Bakery, the 4003 Washington Avenue property, and the adjacent lot next to it at 4011 Washington Avenue (former car lot) is expected to open as a club named La Roux. Construction has been on going for a year or two. [Photo: Eater Houston]

I was browsing the newspaper The Bellaire & Southwestern Texan dated December 15, 1965 and came across an advertisement for Weiner's. Looking briefly online, the company was started in the 1920s and ended in the 2010's following Hurricane Allison. A little confused. Was this just a clothing store, or an actual department store? Was this a bargain retail store? Anyone know more information about this place? I wonder if there were any in my neighborhood in the Texas Medical Center? I know HAIF has a few department store and retail connoisseurs. Fill me in!!

This is pretty huge in my opinion, old Jones Coney Island is being demo'd and a new restaurant called Artisan's will replace it. Seems like a pretty huge price tag!

Anyone know what the plan is for 4444 Montrose? Used to be Etheria Salon & Day Spa, but looks like it was sold to HWM Properties, LLC in 2020. Lot size is 17,325 sq ft. HWM Properties appears to be owned by Wayne Martin, founder of Applied Finish Systems, a drywall company. Martin also owns Chateau Cocomar.

A new retail building is going up on West Bellfort. Lots of biotechnology companies around Kirby, West Bellfort, Willowbend, and Stella Link. Edit: It looks like MD Anderson occupies a few suites here! MD Anderson has recently occupied 21,220 SF and 24,875 SF at 9220 and 9230 Kirby. The architect for the interior remodels was Powers Brown Architecutre.

Always offering the very latest, The Woodlands Mall recently welcomed five new, sought-after retailers to the shopping center. Additionally, a number of retailers have been moving to new locations and improving shopping environments for visitors. Recent additions to the list of retailers include: Oil & Vinegar, described as a fashion food for food, opened earlier this year on the lower level near the Courtyard Shops. A fun shopping experience for the novice or the gourmet cook, the shelves at Oil & Vinegar are filled with treats such as Italian white truffle oil, raspberry vinegar, pastas, relish, dip and more. Sona MedSpa, a nationally known luxury spa recently opened in the office component of the shopping center. Sona provides laser hair removal and anti-aging services. The Woodlands Mall is only the second Houston location for one of the nation

Hubcap Grill 1111 Prairie St (713) 223-5885 It's BYOB too. Best burgers downtown - small little shack next to Alden hotel. I don't think you could spend $10 if you tried, maybe the Triple By-Pass Burger with sweet potatoe fries and a drink would get you close.

Couldn't find if there was an existing thread. But the pier one imports is being demolition and replaced with a chase bank. Drove by today and noticed half the building was already gone. Chase has an entire building directly across the street, could they be rebuilding and moving? It would make sense because they've done this with their other locations like the one on Westheimer and Beltway 8. If they did, their current building across the street could be redeveloped into something big! Building across the street
