  1. I've been researching this shopping center/retail center for a while. Thought I would create a dedicated thread for more exposure. Who was the developer? Who was the architect? Does anyone remember this shopping area on the corner of Holcolmbe & South Main? I bet someone on HAIF used to shop here. Would love to see some photos! This would have been active in the 1960s and was closed in the early 1970s. From the newspaper The Rice Thresher dated November 7, 1968: Sound Equipment 3118 Smith (Smith at Elgin) JA 6-3651 3727 Westheimer (E. of Highland Village) MI 4-7371 7227 Fondren (Next to H.M.T.) 771-5819 (Frontenac Plaza) 6800 S. 2. http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/business/3047139 Feb. 19, 2005, 12:40AM Developers have ideas for Imperial land By NANCY SARNOFF and ERIC HANSON Copyright 2005 Houston Chronicle The sprawling Imperial Sugar refinery, once the center of Sugar Land's economic and social life, is being sold to developers who hope to return it to that status with a project mixing condominiums, single-family homes and retail space. On Friday, Imperial Sugar announced that it reached a preliminary agreement with a partnership of Cherokee Investment Partners and W.C. Perry Land Development to buy the 160-acre Fort Bend County property. "We'll be turning a blight on the community into something more viable and preserving the historic nature of the sight," said W.C. Perry's Will Perry, the son of well-known residential developer Bob Perry of Perry Homes. The elder Perry is not involved. Ultimately, this proposed development could include much more than the old sugar refinery. Perry said the groups will try to acquire a 550-acre tract of state-owned land northwest of the property and redevelop the entire parcel. The prospect of redevelopment is a relief to area residents who have been concerned about living next door to an empty and decaying industrial complex. "I think, for the most part, most people are very excited to know there will be something there instead of a vacant factory with a lot of buildings that need to be demolished. It's looking pretty tacky right now," said Kristin Lytle, who founded the Friends of Old Sugar Land. Perry sees the central feature in the proposed development as something similar to San Antonio's River Walk or The Woodlands Waterway. Oyster Creek runs through the property. Plans are still very preliminary, however, as the group hasn't yet struck a deal with the state on the additional acreage or closed on the Imperial Sugar property. The developers won't discuss the terms or additional details about the proposed project until it is further along. Their deal to buy the Imperial Sugar property could close by year-end, but they must complete a detailed review. Other groups have looked at the sugar refinery site, but it goes back to the early 1900s, and Cherokee's experience in redeveloping old industrial plants helped get the attention of Imperial Sugar executives. The Raleigh, N.C.-based real estate firm buys contaminated properties like old manufacturing and refining sites, cleans up any environmental damage and sells or develops them in partnerships. In 2003, Cherokee closed a $620 million fund

It is also adjacent to the Interchange 249 Business Park. https://www.bizjournals.com/houston/news/2023/10/09/newquest-develops-the-grand-at-249-retail-tomball.html?cx_testId=40&cx_testVariant=cx_27&cx_artPos=1#cxrecs_s "The company said 388,856 square feet, or 96%, of the $90 million development is already leased or under negotiation. The retail center’s 12 1- to 2-acre pad sites should be delivered by the end of the year, NewQuest President Austin Alvis said, adding that all but two of the pads are already committed. Construction for the first multitenant building, totaling 15,000 square feet of retail space on the corner of Highway 249 and Boudreaux Road, should also start by the end of the year, Austin said. A 145,000-square-foot multitenant building row is in the design phase. Also planned are two multitenant buildings totaling 24,902 square feet."
  4. It looks like a kitschy shop called Confetti Riot has opened at 2220 Commerce Ste. E. Their website suggests they carry a similar type of product as Space Montrose. Instagram: @confettiriot_htx
  5. wow! Today I came across a more recent (in terms of business operating years) building of the Westheimer Furniture Company. 6. Does anyone have any old photos of Meyerland Plaza or know where I can find any? I remember shopping there with my mom when I was a little girl.
  7. http://www.bizjournals.com/houston/news/2016/10/05/exclusive-houston-hotelier-to-launch-co-working.html?ana=e_hstn_bn_exclusive The Zimmerman family is redeveloping 4 historic buildings on the north side of Downtown. The brick facades and marquee designs will be restored and the buildings will be used as co-working space. The family has likened the space to an old building in New York City. They have purchased 104 Main, 108 Main, 110 Main and 112 Main for redevelopment.
  8. I've seen this bar/club mentioned on this site, in the "Montrose" section. Lynn Hornaday was one of the owners of the bar, and I worked with Lynn at a downtown stockbrokerage house, during the period when she and Marion were getting the bar up and running. I moved to Australia early 80's and had lost contact with Lynn long before that. Does anyone know Lynn's whereabouts? Is she still in Houston? She was from South Texas originally, if memory serves me correctly. Thanks! Mick
  9. Recently, the Leader reported on the purchase of Ella Plaza by Braun Enterprises. Area residents expressed their excitement on social media about the potential for major improvements to the space as well as additional tenants. John Crawford wrote on the Oak Forest Homeowners Association Facebook page: “Braun is a quality developer. This is definitely good news for the neighborhood.” While Dan Braun said that they will wait to actively market the plaza once their plans are firmly in place, renovations will hopefully start before the end of the year. “The city is backed up and it will take a while to get the permits,” he said. As for keeping the retro Ella Plaza sign, Braun said that they’d like to but are unsure at the present time if the city codes will allow it. “We also have the same problem at 4721 N. Main. The city codes don’t allow for keeping a lot of the old signs if you make any changes other than changing out the panels. We will certainly try.” With several area developments in the Heights, including the spot where the Heights General Store is now located and Yale Street Center with its Yale Street Grill, Braun is familiar with the changing demographics of the Leader area. In the hunt for tenants for his developments, Braun said they generally choose qualified and local regional groups over larger chains. He cites Torchy’s at Harolds as an example, saying that they also had interest from national chains for the location. “We will do our best to find a tenant mix that fits well with the neighborhood,” said Braun of the 30,000 square foot space. “There will probably be a combination of local and regional tenants.”

  11. I thought there was already a thread about this, but I can't find one, so I will include all the information I know. At 2715 Bissonnet in West U, diagonally across the street from the old Coca Cola bottling plant, there is a two-story shopping center from the 1960s or 1970s, which is being torn down for redevelopment. Plans for redevelopment have been going on for a while; this flyer was posted in 2017 when a company called Edge was marketing it. More recently, BPI realty has been marketing it, with the following rendering common to both flyers, showing a one-story strip mall: And here is the site plan: In November, the city of West University Place had a hearing to replat it. The existing development is called The Upper Kirby Building, not to be confused with a building of the same name on Richmond, and other places have referred to it as the Shoppes at Upper Kirby and the Shops at West U, so I am uncertain of what the name of the final development will be. Swamplot reported on the imminent demolition of the existing buildings, including this pre-demolition photo: http://swamplot.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/upper-kirby.jpg Here are some photos I took of it today during demolition:
  12. This makes the second building a long South Main Street (Main Boulevard?) that I never knew about. February 12, 1916. The Owl Supply Co. If we haven't what you want, we'll be glad to get it for you. Opposite the Campus. J.A. Kiibler, Prop. October 27, 1917: Let us know your wants--- We'll do the rest Owl Supply J.A.Kiibler, Proprietor; Opposite the Campus November 19, 1920 The Owl J.A. Kiibler, Proprietor Autury House is located at 6265 South Main Street, and this was right next door. Up close! Amazing photograph, for being in the late 1910s out a long South Main Street. This was all rural land, just all fields. Is Honey Boy Ice Cream still around?
  13. Just saw on their FB page. I wonder why. I hadn't really been since I moved out of midtown 2 years ago but assumed it was still pretty popular. Oh well. https://www.facebook.com/celticgardens/?fref=ts

  15. As far as we know, this diner should be opening within a few weeks. The diner will be located at the corner of Brazos and Pierce in the shadow of the Pierce Elevated. I am wondering if this will be a 24 hour type place as there are few places like this in midtown. Parking maybe an issue as well. Any new restaurant is a welcome addition in my opinion.
  16. Just ran across this by way of a search on HAR: Da Vinci Court They are townhouses in the 1500 block of North Main and apparently is the first project in the Hardy Railyard development. They look very nice. Has anyone been by there lately? Are these already under construction? Well, I just did the virtual tour on the website and it appears that some of them have already been built. Is that correct?
  17. I was told this building will be demolished but didn't have a timeline as to when. HCAD shows it being 2902 Tuam St.
  18. Does anyone know what year the Lyric Center was built? Also, does anyone know the name of the white building about 30 floors, located somewhere between the Lyric center and the JPMorgan Chase tower? When viewed from the west, it has rectangular windows in the center of the building that are longer vertically than horizontally. The windows on the north and south edges are more square shaped. It is relatively new and I don't see any info on it in the list of downtown buildings? Been away from Houston for a while so any help would be appriciated.

  20. Formerly Saint Dane's - new poles / beer garden maybe being set up in former parking lot? Looks like the Pizza Patron logo? Very curious. Getting close to finishing the spur redo
  21. I was looking on Micro-Flim of the Bryan-College Station Eagle the other day and I noticed an old fast food restaurant opening College Station called "Tinsley's Chicken 'n Rolls" Boss Bird. It Also had double drive thru. Do any of you remember this restaurant? Was it a chain? This was around November 1979.
  22. I heard they are going to demo that 'landmark' building to pave way for mixed-use development. Anyone has any info on that development?
  23. There's an existing topic for this property that predates this one by a month. Moderators, please consider merging this with the topic for High Fashion Home - 3100 Travis St. It's the same property. @Urbannizer @Triton https://www.houstonarchitecture.com/haif/topic/2722-high-fashion-home-at-3100-travis-st
