  1. There's a new(ish) place to eat downtown: Louis' Deli on San Jacinto between Prairie and Preston. The place is a bit divey, but in a good way. The people who run it are super duper nice, and eager to please; something that seems to be in short supply post-COVID. Or maybe it was just my bad luck going to this nice place straight from Campesino Coffee, where the barista I always get could not care less about whether the customers lived or died, or even existed. I've had nicer customer service from both the I.R.S. and the D.M.V. Back to Louis place: "Deli" is in the name, but it's more like a cross between a hamburger stand and a diner. A small diner, since there's only three tables. But most customers seem to get their food to go. I stayed for my cheeseburger. Pretty generous, considering the price. That's a $25 hamburger down the street at the Nash, but at Louis', it's $10 flat. And unlike the place down the street, it comes with a smile from someone who remembers that this is supposed to be the "hospitality" industry. Also, Louis' will deliver, while the Nash tells me it doesn't have the staff to even deliver inside its own building anymore. The meat is seasoned well, which is another thing that's becoming rare, and it's all served very very hot. Have you ever noticed that food in England is served at a much higher temperature than here? It's like that. I'll definitely go again. Nice people, good food. And lots of things on the menu I'd like to try. Here's the menu posted in the window: It's just good, basic food done well, and served with a smile. It seems like 90% of the new restaurants in Houston are trying to be theme parks, rather than restaurants; more interested in social media thumbs than in actually serving a meal. The guy who runs the place says it's been open since mid-February. I hope it stays open for a long time. I know I'll do my bit to help it out. If you ever see an elderly fat guy with a bucket hat at the corner table, say hi.
  2. I noticed this Brooks System Sandwich Shops' One's A Meal spinoff called Dean's Meal-In-One. From what I read, Brooks System Sandwich Shops were nicknamed One's A Meal after a huge sandwich. The sandwich was so big it was considered one meal. This spinoff is called Dean's Meal-In-One and was located at Southgate Blvd. & Travis St. in the TMC. I found this business listing in one of Rice University's The Thresher publications dated April 18, 1968.

  4. I've seen this bar/club mentioned on this site, in the "Montrose" section. Lynn Hornaday was one of the owners of the bar, and I worked with Lynn at a downtown stockbrokerage house, during the period when she and Marion were getting the bar up and running. I moved to Australia early 80's and had lost contact with Lynn long before that. Does anyone know Lynn's whereabouts? Is she still in Houston? She was from South Texas originally, if memory serves me correctly. Thanks! Mick
  5. Has anyone heard anything about a new restaurant going up at the corner of White Oak & Oxford--across the street from Onion Creek? There's a sign up that says Soul Food and Fried Chicken restaurant coming. Nice to have something different to choose from, but that seems like an odd location for this type of food.
  6. Having grown up in East Houston I've always been accustomed to saying that the best Mexican restaurants are on the East side, primarily since the population is more Hispanic that side of the city. Problem is I don't really know if the ones I frequent are the best. Anyone have any nominations? One interesting restaurant, whose name I can't recall at the moment, is a Mexican seafood restauraunt that's run by Chinese! It's menu is an experiment in what some, I guess, nowdays call fusion. Instead of Spanish rice, you can have your meal with fried rice. Anyway, you wouldn't think that Chinese could run a sucessful Mexican seafood restaurant in a Hispanic neighborhood but they do. I love eating at this restaurant just because it's atmosphere is an atypical blend of two ethnicities.

  9. As far as we know, this diner should be opening within a few weeks. The diner will be located at the corner of Brazos and Pierce in the shadow of the Pierce Elevated. I am wondering if this will be a 24 hour type place as there are few places like this in midtown. Parking maybe an issue as well. Any new restaurant is a welcome addition in my opinion.
