  1. Subdivision Plat filed for multifamily at 1933 Dryden SubdivisionPlatPDF_19-0072-PLAT.pdf Rather unfortunate as these two homes currently sit on the site.
  2. Noticed this sign today at San Felipe at Fountain View. Weird restrictions. Small apartment or a few town homes here?
  3. I was looking in-depth at the Greenwood's Sanitarium advertisement and I noticed something interesting. For the location of the hospital, it states: South Main Street, on Oak Hill, the coolest part of Houston. What's the story on the Oak Hill part of town? This would have been in the 1910s through the 1950s. Was the neighborhood, or general area, renamed at some point? This would have been in the area of South Main and Old Spanish Trail.
  4. Would just love to see a photograph of this home! Or in fact, even anywhere near here. I wonder who this family is? Maybe their family will see this and chime in with family history? The family was in the newspaper, so they must have been important to the surrounding community? I can try and find it on Google Earth, but it doesn't always work out, or the image is too blurry. From the newspaper The Jewish Herald-Voice dated September 27, 1962. Mrs. Jack M. Stein and Milton 7333 Old Main Road Wish all their relatives and friends a Happy and Prosperous New Year.
  5. Yea that is a good article, I guess I should ask about the history of the Spanish Style home that one has been there since before 1944. AS seen in the pic here. http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg60/dlfswi/historic-houston/bras-mansion44.png 1953 pic http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg60/dlfswi/historic-houston/bras-mansion53.png 1964 pic http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg60/dlfswi/historic-houston/bras-mansion64.png 02 pic http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg60/dlfswi/historic-houston/bras-mansion02.png Also thx for the responses guys I appreciate it.
  6. Love this house!! Thought I would share the information I found with HAIF. Anyone know the architect? Or an exact address? A quick browse brought me to finding this: The Henry Fox house, the last mansion on Main Street, occupied the site of the present Exxon Building. So Main Street at Bell Street? If that information is accurate. I assume the neighborhood was Quality Hill. Residence of Henry S. Fox
  7. The Witch's Hat House, from the Houston Architectural Guide, second edition. I used to see this house all the time because I used to bank at Gibraltar, now Bank of America, on San Jacinto and it was right across the street. In the late 80's it looked pretty sharp and slowly deteriorated. Sad, but no one wanted to live there in those days. Interestingly, it won a Good Brick award in 1981!
  8. wow!! James Johnson Sweeney's mansion was epic! This home is just "boss" as you might say. The home was built in the 1900s or 1910s. I assume this was in the downtown neighborhood called Quality Hill. Residence of J.J. Sweeney Edit: This was an Olle Lorehn design!
  9. Charlotte Baldwin Allen, wife of Houston founder Augustus Chapman Allen, occupied this two story frame house located at 718 Main at Rusk Avenue. She occupied the home from its original construction in the 1850s until her death at age ninety in 1895. The house was later demolished in 1915. The old home of the Allen family (founders of Huston) Another photograph:
  10. I found an article dated October 8, 1934 that outlines Jake Freedman's home located at 1220 Chartres Street. Did he not live at the Domain Privee on Old Main Street Road? Or maybe this was a second house, or even his family home? Several applications for membership in this Congregation were announced. Mr. H. Levin of 1803 McGowen, Mr. Jake Freedman of 1220 Chartres Street, and Mr. L. Dittman of 1506 N. Jacinto were proposed by Mr. Godapper. Mr. H. Passman, of 81 Preston Avenue, was proposed by Mr. J.L. Zuber. Mr. Jacob Rosenberg, of 812 Preston, was proposed by Mr. Sam Rosenberg. These applications were favorable acted upon and the Secretary was instructed to so notify them and extend an invitation to our Friday night services.

  13. I was looking for old, cool, Texas Medical Center stuff and came across a historic address. Engineering News-record - Volume 142, Part 1 1949 Houston - R. A. Carlson, 6900 Old Main Street Rd., residential project, Dumbarton St. Owner builds. Approx. $325,000 Looks like R.A. Carlson was the owner of a real estate company. Found in the newspaper Southwestern Times dated December 15, 1949: Carlson Starts Homes In Bellaire Addition Construction of homes in the R.A. Carlson Company, Inc. Laurel Hurst addition started this week, following paving of streets in the subdivision which lies south of the Bellaire Fire Station. According to R.A. Carlson, president of the firm, about $432,000 worth of construction is contemplated for the 36-lot addition.. Five of the 15 homes which the Carlson company will build are schedule for December. The homes will be priced at about $12,000
  14. Another John Staub mansion bites the dust: Astros owner Jim Crane buys $24M historic River Oaks home only to tear it down
  15. I was reading the newspaper The Southwest Citizen dated April 27, 1950 and came across a very cool home! The man who started the construction empire WS Bellows!! WS Bellows has worked with countless projects in the Texas Medical Center and even has a street named after the family. I wonder the architect of this West University home? Was Mr. Bellows the original owner/family to live there? Citizens In The News -- Warren S. Bellows. 1728 North Boulevard, appointed chairman of the Harris County port commission, succeeding Wilson Saville, 3217 Groveland, who retired.

  17. Today I was searching around for old hospitals and came across a very cool address! Thought I would share with HAIF. I am confused. Did the block 9200 South Main Street (or Main Street Boulevard) exist in the 1920s? I looked on a few maps of the 1920s and 1930s. One map showed South Main Street stopping at Holcombe Blvd, while Old Main Street Road was the only road going further. Other maps showed South Main Street as being a paved roadway. Which one was it?!?! The address in the thread title could be wrong. This might be 9218 South Main Street. I found the details in the publication Harris County Medical Society, Woman's Auxiliary Year Book Program dated September, 1926. Year Book Woman's Auxiliary To The Harris County Medical Society Organized April 1919 Federated State May 1919 Houston, Texas 1926-1927 The doctor's addresses contained the following: Cruse, Mrs. P.R. - 208 Sul Ross, H. 4502 Denman, Mrs. P.R. - 1220 Southmore, H. 0417 Devoti, Mrs. J.J. - Broadway and Alexander, W. 1658 Dunman, Mrs. T.E. - 711 Hawthorne, H. 1696 Durha, Mrs. M.E. - 438 W. 21st St., T. 5946 Ellis, Mrs. J.C. - 1301 Marshal, H. 3237 Elliot, Mrs. M.L. - 9218 S. Main, H. 0773 Feagin, Mrs. H.C. - 3806 Garrett, H. 0361 Flickwir, Mrs. A.C - 4316 Dallas, W. 4209 Foster, Mrs. J.B. - 2020 W. Main, W. 5799 Foster, Mrs. J.H. - 1708 River Oaks, H. 6791 8 years after, in 1934, the house was occupied by Mrs. Greenwood. Very interesting, because I think this is the source of the internet's wrong information regarding the location of Greenwood's Sanitarium which is (actually) located at 7308 Old Main Street Road. I believe, to my research, these are different families. I do know there was a James Greenwood Senior, and a James Greenwood Junior. Maybe this is the one of the wives? According to TSHA, Greenwood, James, Sr. was married to Ella Harris. Definitely not James Greenwood Senior! https://www.tshaonline.org/handbook/entries/greenwood-james-sr From the newspaper The Rice Thresher dated November 23, 1934: As the regular meeting of the E.B. L.S. Last Monday, the pledges invited all of the active members to an Open House which will be given at the home of Mary Greenwood, 9218 Main Street. Saturday evening, November 24, from 7:30 until 9:30. The hostess announced the following committees to make arrangement for the party invitations, Martha Bartels, Billie Byers, Catherine Crain, and Peggy Warren. Refreshments, Kathleen Carr and Betty Abbott. The decorations will be keeping the approaching Thanksgiving season. The annual Thanksgiving breakfast given by active members for the alumnae, will be held at 8:0 next Thursday morning at the Carolina Pines. Misses Katherine Dionne, Ida Delllacy, Elizabeth Neathery and Kate Ross Patton will preside at the coffee service. An autumn theme will be carried out in the dining room where the fruit and autumn leaves on a mirror reflector will center the table.
  18. Discovered this while looking for more information on another multifamily apartment project by Greystar. In 2014, Greystar will also begin Elan Memorial Park, which will be located in the Washington corridor submarket of Houston. It will be divided into two phases of 292 and 258 units. http://apmanagement.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/The-Apartment-Report_APC_7.8.13_PRESS-BREAK.pdf Edit: Phase I: Elan Memorial Park at 920 Westcott Street. Phase II: The Westcott Memorial Park at 929 Westcott Street.

The 1,300 acres, mostly owned by one family, are bounded by Emmett F. Lowry Expressway, state Highway 146, Moses Bayou and state Highway 3."
  23. I was searching Ebay for historical Houston items and found an unknown photograph of a large mansion located at 2317 Louisiana Street. I searched, briefly, in the libraries and couldn't find anything. I wonder the decade and date? Looks like the 1920s to me, but I could be wrong. Looks like a residential mansion, but could have been used as a hospital/sanitarium at one point. The top and bottom borders say "owl" on them. I wonder if there was any relation to Rice University? HAIF historians, any information on this one?
  24. Maybe there is another thread? but I wondering if there are nY updates of these two historic houses just off Stanford street?
  25. https://www.bizjournals.com/houston/news/2022/09/15/hines-master-planned-community-rosenberg.html Hines is developing a master planned community on 850 acres along the Southwest Freeway at Finney-Vallet Road in what will be a newly-annexed section of Rosenberg, per the terms of an agreement made by the city with the developer earlier in the year. The first phase of 400 homes is supposed begin later in the year and is expected to be complete by 2024. There will be up to 2400 at full build-out. Reports from the press release tout that this is Hines' largest single-family residential development since their much larger First Colony community came about in the 70s. A multifamily and commercial component is also expected to be part of the development as well. In addition to homes and up to 250 acres of park space, another school that will be zoned to Lamar Consolidated ISD is expected to be constructed. This isn't so surprising as the District is expected to add nearly 20 new schools over the next decade or so.
