Would like to know what was there before the car wash. I have one of the tenates as Oscar J. Steele, lived there between 1967-1975 appox. Address: 1127 Studewood Years: 1967 - 1975 Possible owner: Oscar J. Steele Jr. Thanks for the help
  2. http://search.har.com/engine/dispSearch.cf...mp;backButton=Y Originally designed for Walter Price. Someone with the last name Price owns it now, probably a relative.
  3. The childhood home of cosmetics mogul Mary Kay Ash (nee Mary Kay Wagner), founder of Mary Kay Cosmetics, is threatened with demolition. The diminutive house at 2111 Kane Street was Ash
  4. Spotted this going up on Chevy Chase a few weeks back. I apologize for the crap picture. Doesn't do it justice at all. The entire left side is mostly glass. Very impressive house. http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r85/zoomanderson/3736ChevyChase.jpg?t=1223405317 No idea who the architect is.
  5. Hey all, We went on a driving tour of memorial yesterday. Sad state of affairs out there! 328 Buckingham is now gone, and 843 Friar Tuck is probably right behind. Had a good time though other than that... Here's 843 Friar Tuck - real bad shape. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v729/clockwatchers/DSC00464.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v729/clockwatchers/DSC00465.jpg By Ben Koush from the 2005 RDA tour (it was on the peripheral drive by only tour) 328 Buckingham Drive Liese House Lloyd & Morgan 1954 By the 1950s Lloyd & Morgan was known mostly for their commercial buildings. However, they continued to design a small number of houses for select clients. The gracious design of the Liese House was one of Hermon Lloyd
  6. This cute little house built in 1957 is on Memorial Drive, right across from Town & Country Village. Unfortunate that it's on such a busy street and that the owners haven't taken care of it at all, since both of those things mean that it will probably be demolished soon. In fact, there's already a giant David Weekly sign in the front yard: "Build on your own lot!" Someone will, I'm sure, since that's the popular thing to do in Memorial Bend (this house's neighborhood). Here's the HAR link: http://search.har.com/engine/dispSearch.cf...mp;backButton=Y Here's the exterior: http://memorialbendarchitecture.com/12747mem.jpg A few interior shots: http://images-75.har.com/e1/mediadisplay/75/hr2169575-27.jpg http://images-75.har.com/e1/mediadisplay/75/hr2169575-20.jpg And here's the original 1958 ad for the house from the Chronicle: http://memorialbendarchitecture.com/12747mem_hcad.jpg Any takers? It's a great neighborhood...

  8. On Sunday the 13th there will be a mod of the month open house in Glenbrook Valley at 8015 Arletta. The motm choice is a roman brick mod with vaulted ceilings in all the rooms. It features formals with clerestory windows, large kitchen, den with fireplace, cedar closets, vintage tile baths, 3 bedrooms, 2 baths in the main house and a half bath in the garage. It is located on a great cul de sac street. Houston Mod At the same time a number of other homes will be held open, so it creates an opportunity to see a lot of different Glenbrook Valley home styles. There is a large Tudor style home backing up to Sims at 7707 Lakewind that was designed by Ben F. Greenwood that may be open, I still need to confirm with the agent. It is priced at $325,000. Others that will be open in addition to the Arletta house include: 7831 Santa Elena at Broadway - A one-owner very original colonial with extensive poured terrazzo flooring, formals, den, triple masters, and a detached 2 room home office suite, second mini-kitchen off the breakfast room. $239,900 8119 Stony Dell - boom a rang shaped roman brick ranch on a very hilly lot. Formals, den, open kitchen concept, 2 full baths. $199,900 8206 Glencrest - corner lot ranch over 3,300 sq ft per appraisal. Formals, den, bonus room, 3 br/2.5 baths. $245,000 8211 Colgate - Clean lined mid-century ranch with 20' square main living area, beautiful sunroom, 3 br/3 ba. $239,900 If you like older houses and neighborhoods, this is a good chance to get out and tour this area.
  9. Tillman Fertitta lives in a 25,000+ square foot house on Willowick Road in River Oaks. I've never seen it in person, but when my brother drove by after golfing at a course nearby, he said that it was gigantic, and all of the garage doors were open to display his exquisite car collection. Does anyone have pictures of this palace? I'm dying to see it! p.s. The address is 3800 Willowick, and the best view you can get (without pictures) is going to maps.live.com, typing in the address and clicking "Bird's eye."

  11. Anyone know anything about what's going on at 8 Waverly Court (owned by Anne Bohnn)? A sewer disconnect/demolition permit was just issued, but didn't specify for what exactly.
  12. There's a cool MCM home just around the corner from me, at 2145 Southgate (photo included). The owner notes: Restored 1965 mid-century Modern house (architect Charles Thompsen). Quiet and private, this small house feels spacious with all rooms looking onto (with floor to ceiling glass) landscaped courtyards. Has great trees front and back. My home, at 2134 MacArthur, will go on the market in 2 weeks. It's not "MCM" per se, but an interesting 1952 ranch style on about a 135-degree angle on a wedge-shaped corner lot.
  13. We are a condominium community located at 2400 McCue Road near the intersection with Westheimer Road in Houston, Texas. https://2400mccue.com/
  14. Longtime HAIF members might remember that this property was discussed on the 'old' (pre-crash) forum. It was occupied by a Christian woman who served meals and salvation to the homeless. A local developer (and sometimes HAIF contributor) had nearly put a deal together for this block when The Lord told the woman to hold onto her property. Well, apparently someone's met The Lord's price; it was sold this past June to Alabama Main Partners LP. The house is now vacant, and is rapidly falling into disrepair. Too bad - there's some nice details on this circa 1910 house (leaded glass windows, for example.) What makes this sale interesting is that this house is the last remaining structure on that block (bordered by Travis, Sul Ross, W. Alabama and Milam/Spur 527). It's located just west of the site discussed here:3800 Main. Any info on what might be built here? The street pattern is kind of screwy, which would be a design challenge.
  15. Thought I'd throw this out there... Tamara de Lempicka (wikipedia, just in case) moved from Manhattan to Houston in 1963 to be near her daughter Kizette (with whom she had a turbulent relationship) and spent about fifteen years here. Does anyone remember the house owned by her daughter at 3235 Reba Dr. (HCAD link) in River Oaks between River Oaks Blvd. and Bellmeade? (map) The family (Harold Foxhall was her son-in-law, and I presume Marie Foxhall is her granddaughter) sold it in 2001 and it was demolished, but I read about some craziness that went on there - regular shouting matches when Tamara would visit, crazy demands on her son-in-law to paint purple stripes on the house until he got the right color to paint the entire house...it is briefly described in this quote from Claridge's biography Tamara de Lempicka: A Life of Deco and Decadence: "Cars slowed down as they passed the site, suddenly so incongruous among the neighborhood's stately houses and classical architecture. Finally Tamara was satisfied, but when Kizette returned, she forced her mother to abort the project. The stripes, however, remained for weeks, and 3235 Reba Drive became a kind of local tourist attraction." Tamara first lived at the Warwick when she moved here, then bought a condo at Regency House - anyone know any information about those?
  16. http://members.har.com/sites/marthaturner/...m?MLNUM=8987822 Look for something special regarding this house soon.
  17. Does anyone know what they are building on 34th Street where the Bill Mraz club used to be?
  18. Notice the platted grid shown in the middle of 5, 6, 9, and 10? The HCAD plat maps say that it is a subdivision called Institute Place. Aerial photos show several houses right up near the still-active Columbia Tap tracks; the owners apparently really really like palm trees. The houses look like they were built around the 1950's or 60's. But most of the platted street grid doesn't exist and the forest that once covered the platted area was scraped early last year. I've seen the acreage advertised in real estate marketing materials as something vague which is "Coming Soon!" but don't know anything else about the history or future of Institute Place. Anybody else out there have information? http://www.hcad.org/iMaps/Pages/5354B.gif
  19. I know I posted this house a while back as a 'whodunit' type of thread, but since I can't find it, I'll repost entirely. This house is located on a flag lot a few houses down from Wylie Vale's Raymond Schindler House at 17 West Lane Place and Bolton & Barnstone's Farfel house at 18 West Lane Place. A flag lot is fairly unique to the Tall Timbers section of River Oaks, in which owners of these large lots have an option to sell a large piece of their property (usually the front half) off to someone else. Other neighborhoods (like Stillforest) have lots like this, as well. I stumbled on this house one afternoon while looking for the aforementioned Schindler house. You can barely see it from the street (you kind of have to look over a new palace's shoulder to see it). It appears to be excellently maintained, too. I contacted the usual authorities and they were stumped, so I wrote a letter to the owner (I won't use his name to maintain his privacy), and he returned my letter this week. He's originally from Dallas, and had Dallas-based architect Scott Lyons design his house in 1970. Lyons was a long-time employee of O'neil Ford (he's mentioned multiple times in the book O'neil Ford: Architect. He also designed many houses in the Preston Hollow and Turtle Creek neighborhoods of Dallas. Here are a few of his projects that have been for sale in the past few years: http://www.dougnewby.com/Architecture/Arch...scott_lyons.asp http://www.dougnewby.com/dmh/texasmodern/p.../10240_gaywood/ Notice the similiar materials and exquisite detailing. Here's another example by O'neil Ford: http://www.dougnewby.com/dmh/texasmodern/p...455_northbrook/ So there's another one identified, which has turned out to be a previously unknown treasure. Let's hope there's a few more out there.
  20. Other than the photos in the Houston Mod catalog profiling the architect, and the images in Ephemeral City, do any of you have or know of any images of the Cullinan House by Hugo V. Neuhaus, Jr.? I have always been interested in that home, one of the biggest losses in terms of mod demolition for Houston, I feel.
  21. The 8 br, 9 full ba, 23000 sq. ft. palace located on 31 W Rivercrest off Briar Forest. It's been under contruction for years but now for sale at $4.7 million. Where did the Tx State Rep Hubert Vo get his fortune??? Jim
  22. 12927 Memorial became active on the market as of yesterday -- here's HAR's listing for the previous sale (current HAR listing appears to be unavailable): http://www.har.com/HomeValue/dispSoldDetai...?MLNUM=1436766# There is a well documented series of images at the aforementioned site. The house has been extensively remodeled; removing most of it's original Post-War Modern qualities. Could one "backdate" the house? Sure, but it doesn't make economic sense to strip out "new" to replace with new. Uncovering who the architect was for this house would be of value, I suspect the developer/builder was Bob Pine. Backstory on this property may be found at: http://memorialbendarchitecture.com/12927mem.htm
  23. On the market for a few days: http://search.har.com/engine/doSearch.cfm?...&FOR_SALE=1 Affordable for the area -- especially given that it is habitable from day one. Back story at: http://memorialbendarchitecture.com/12943mem.htm
  24. If you should somehow make your way to this board, Staub's second house for the Elkins family is on Farish Circle, which is an extension of Carnarvon Dr. It's at the very end of the road, but it nowhere near visible from the street. According to city documents, Staub and Rather designed the home in 1947 for James A. and Margaret Wiess Elkins Jr. .
  25. This one has a somewhat stealth quality as there is no "For Sale" sign posted. The HAR listing possesses no interior images and the property is listed as "Lot Value Only". Built in 1957 -- owner possesses architectural drawings -- this one is a flat roof modified building as is evident on the Memorial Bend Architecture site. Listed at 270K I would venture to guess this is a high price for only lot value -- but it's also a high price for the building as well. There have been at least two offers to date, neither accepted. Chances are, this one is a goner. http://www.har.com/9958541
