  1. Signs up on every sign of the block. The brick structure/wall always intruiged me and the lofts next door are cool re-use of an old building. Anyone know whats up?
  2. I found this Midtown map on the Page Partners site and I was looking at information for this midtown retail development that was mentioned earlier on this forum: The map stresses where this development will be located but shows the different uses of the area. Does anyone have information on the residential project at the very top of the map named Camden Central City? Has anyone heard of it. The one thing that scares me about Camden is, if it is not mixed use, you usually get the stuff that exsist in Midtown now that Camden owns.
  3. Anyone else see this house on the front page of the Chronicle's Sunday real estate section? 8 Remington If money was no object and I could live anywhere in Houston, Shadyside would be probably be at the top of the list. They're asking more than twice what HCAD has the property appraised at, but how often do houses in Shadyside come on the market, anyway? 10 Remington sits on an even bigger chunk of land - a staggering four acres right in the heart of the Museum District. The aerial view from Google Maps is impressive, to say the least.
  4. I just need a little over $9.5 mill and I would buy it. http://search.har.com/engine/2307-River-Oaks-Bl-Houston-TX-77019_HAR17501491.htm The county records show a major renovation was done in 2007 so I doubt it looked exactly like that in the days he was there but still kind of a cool part of history to own. He actually died in the house in 1993. http://www.chron.com/CDA/archives/archive.mpl/1993_1121241/frank-sharp-dies-in-sleep-at-age-87-success-scanda.html
  5. How would I find out who all lived in the house I grew up in? It was built in 1960 and we moved in in 1982. HCAD only has records back to 1988. Where should I look for this info? Thanks!!
  6. Houston Mod and the National Trust for Historic Preservation: The 1948 Dominique and John de Menil home located at 3363 San Felipe Road in River Oaks was designed by award-winning architect Phillip Johnson.
  7. Grapevine News: I hear that McD's on Post Oak is selling off part of its land for a hirise and will stay in place. If i'm wrong, sorry. Pretty sure it's real.
  8. Found this nice MCM home designed by Jenkins for sale in the Willowbend area. Open house on January 29, 1pm - 4pm. I don't know how to get a photo in the body of the post, but below is a link to the HAR listing. The agent has pages from a magazine article about Jenkins and about the house in the photos. 10914 Willowisp Dr.
  9. A little late finding this but it's a great house: http://www.statesman.com/business/content/business/stories/statesmanhomes/2009/06/28/0628midcentury.html Plug the address into Google Earth
  10. Does any one know/remember the name of the private club that used to be on Buffalo Speedway north of S.Main on the east side on the street between Durhill St. and Elmridge St.? It's building were there from the early 50s to sometime around 1976. I think at one point it became someones private property. It had either a large swimming pool or a huge pond on the property. Here's a pic of the location off Google Earth 1953. http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg60/dlfswi/Picture12.png In fact if you go to Google Earth you can still see where the property was. Edit: The present-day 2023 address would be 3511 Linkwood Drive where the Bethany United Methodist Church is located. When viewing the historical images on Google Earth or Historic Aerials, 69 years ago, the address could have been different. Can confirm there is a swimming pool, pond, or a body of water next to the house.
  11. I can't find a thing about it on HAIF, and I'm surprised because I figure y'all know it ALL about buildings in Houston and surrounding. So today, I was in a photo shoot at the Stewart mansion, far west end of Galveston island. It is one of the most phenomenal buildings I've ever been in. There's almost nothing left of the upstairs, and the downstairs is following suit, but the place had to have been just epic in its heyday. Anyone know anything beyond what Googling yields, which is essentially: built in 1926, bought by Maco Stewart, given to UTMB, sold to George Mitchell, now owned by local investment group. No talk of when it became vacant, why it's been abandoned for so long, or what anyone plans to do with it.
  12. There was a large, old, 2 story, rectangle house that sat on a nice treed lot, at @ 8533 Almeda-Genoa, north side of road. GoogleEarth stills shows the house, but when you zoom in, no house, or bldgs. Does anyone know if it is still standing, what happened to it? Always thought it was so nice. The property was actually turned into a business in later years. The lot still looks really nice, huge trees. Heard a tale of a family tragedy associated with it, a suicide.
  13. Hi everybody...I've noticed that you guys were talking about a McMansion on Fulton and Calvacade intersection. Well let me tell you this, that house is small compare to a "true" MANSION that is almost fully built on GULF BANK ( the house is located between Airline and Hardy Toll Road). If any of you guys want to see this montrous house, please go see it and tell me what you think. Let me give you an idea on how big of house this is....the house that is found on the Fulton and Calvacade intersection (Lindale Park) is the size of the "guest house" found on the premises of this HUGE MANSION located on Gulf Bank. Again this house is found between Airline and Hardy Toll Road on Gulf Bank. Go check it out!
  14. Hey HAIF, As much as it pains me to do this; my mid century mod is hitting the market due to my job relocating. I spent years looking for this house and hoping to have it end up in the hands of someone who appreciate the architecture and home as much as I do. It's in Oak Forest, 3 bed, 2 baths, about 2300 sq feet on a huge corner lot. Some pictures are below and the house will be open on July 23rd and 24th from 2 - 4 PM. If you love Mod architecture would love to have you come out. The address is 2103 De Milo, Houston Texas 77018 Any questions send me a PM or can email directly at christopher.fisher at gmail.com http://i53.tinypic.com/mhzic4.jpg http://i54.tinypic.com/k0msfk.jpg http://i51.tinypic.com/vqkyoo.jpg http://i52.tinypic.com/2ug1e12.jpg http://i52.tinypic.com/xcr8fo.jpg http://i55.tinypic.com/2lbz8g2.jpg
  15. Mod of the Month Sunday, May 15th, 2011, 2:00 - 4:00 PM Houston Mod invites you to join us this Sunday for Mod of the Month. Two wonderful mid-century-modern houses will be open for touring. The houses need new owners/are available for purchase. They are located in southwest Houston near South Post Oak and Willowbend. This is a free event. 10914 Willowisp Drive, Houston, Texas 77035 Willowbend This beautiful mid-century modern house, designed by one of Houston's most notable 1950s modern residential architects William R. Jenkins, will be open for touring. Nestled in a small enclave of notable MCM homes, this house is centered around a walled courtyard with a swimming pool. The layout is designed to feel very open yet private from the street. Lots of great details remain including original floating style cabinetry, poured terrazzo, skylights & lots of floor to ceiling glass. HAR link 10813 Willowisp Drive, Houston, Texas 77035 Willowbend This mid-century modern house is believed to have been designed by another of Houston's most notable 1950s modern residential architects, William N. Floyd, who helped William R. Jenkins get his start. Jenkins and Floyd were partners in an architectural firm for several years in the 1950s (likely during the time this house was built). Floyd is most well known for his involvement as an architect in the Memorial Bend neighborhood. This house is very similar to his best designs in Memorial Bend. The house features several walls of glass, hardwood floors and an open concept. It has 3 bedrooms, two baths, and a large yard. HAR link Support future Mod events by becoming a member of Houston Mod. 16. From 1962 to 1964 I lived in a small white house located at # 8 West Court Drive. It was on the corner of that street and Galveston Road, just south of where Park Place Boulevard dead ends into Galveston Road. Sims Bayou is nearby. Has anyone out there been in that area recently? As I said, I haven't been there in over 40 years (I live in Orange, Texas, which is 100 east of Houston). I was wondering if the house that I lived in back then is still there. Chet Cuccia
  17. I spotted 4603 Ivanhoe St: http://search.har.com/engine/4603-Ivanhoe-St-Houston-TX-77027_HAR87835783.htm They've updated it - doesnt look all MCM in style but certainly looks intriguing. What do you think? I hope to go see it this week... Bryan
  18. Ben brought it to my attention that this house is for sale. http://search.har.com/engine/dispSearch.cfm?mlnum=95455265&backButton=Y&Address=218%20Pine%20Hollow%20Ln When I wrote the Jenkins book, I debated a long time about whether or not to feature this house. All of the houses I featured were in Bellaire and just south of Bellaire. This house is off of Woodway on Pine Hollow. I didn't have any vintage photos of the house, and there would be little way to make it look great now, so I decided to leave it out. I went over and visited the current owner once and toured the house a couple of years ago and it was looking neglected. I'm starting to regret that I didn't feature it now, as it is up for sale, and likely to meet a demo crew. Hopefully we can all get over there soon for a tour. If one had the money and interest, this would be a very interesting project. Many original features remain, and the view/real estate is terrific. The house was built in 1953 for the Sullivan family. There is a bedroom addition with lots of glass that follows the style of the original house. I have a small newspaper clipping of it, but on my home computer. Jason
  19. The house at 54 Briar Hollow Ln. is completely gone. Demolition looks to be recent, and luxury condos seem to be pending. 65 Briar Hollow is still there, as is an unidentified mod across the court.
  20. Hello everyone, I'm new here, so if this is a well-known house and I just missed it. Has anyone seen the house on Brown Saddle Rd. in Tanglewood that looks like a submarine coming out of the ground? It's a long, thin mod from the 60's or 70's and was probably done by one of the better known architects in town. The owners have or have had in the past a classic Ford Thunderbird. That's all the info I've got.
  21. OK, I'm SO not a rental apartment type of person, but the Alexan Lofts are pretty darn cool. I have a couple of friends who live there, and they seem to be high quality and very urban (unlike the new construction pseudo-lofts in other parts of downtown). Apparently, they were lofts before the management company took them over and renovated, but I'm not sure. The only major downside, apart from the lack of retail, is the proximity of the well-used train tracks. I can't imagine that those trains are quiet as they come roaring just feet from the building at all hours of the day and night. My friends say they are oblivious to the sound, but still....I guess that is why they are rentals and not individually owned. Does anyone else know of cool, not-as-well-known loft rentals? It might be good to get a list going to show that there is more to the downtown area than Post, Rice, and Calais! Travelguy_73
  22. If you've lived in Houston for any real length of time, you've probably seen or at least driven by this house. It's on Chimney Rock, just past Memorial Drive: http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r85/zoomanderson/House-On-Chimney-Rock.jpg So who designed it?
  23. amazing mod in walnut bend...flat roof, terrazzo...featured in 1960 Parade of Homes (see previous hou mod discussion threads) i haven't listed it yet...would prefer to sell to a mod lover. heartbroken to have to leave. call or email me if you would like more info or to view house. robyn arouty 281.731.2129 robyn@project71.com
  24. This house is for sale - currently $169,900 - and I love it. It's been through a lot though (check out the HAR recently sold pictures). I would be great if it landed in the hands of an appreciative homeowner! http://search.har.com/engine/10822-Moonlight-Dr-Houston-TX-77096_HAR94490579.htm http://www.har.com/HomeValue/dispSoldDetail.cfm?MLNUM=9026184 http://i46.tinypic.com/nf2xdw.jpg http://i45.tinypic.com/20tlb1c.jpg http://i46.tinypic.com/vr535i.jpg
