  1. Oh yeah - the swimming pool/baths, too. In 1917 there was an entry for Bismark Park that reads "see Eden Park" -- I can't find anything about a Bismark Park from prior years (maybe it was just a short-lived name) but also not much more about Eden Park except for an ice cream and ice cream cone manufacturer (Eden Park Say-So Cone Factory - high grade ice cream and ice cream cones, 314 Dallas Ave.). Also, the shooting gallery was the Amos Williams Shooting Gallery and the hamburger stand was run by someone named Charles Kennedy.
  2. I was wondering if anyone has heard of Eden Park in Houston? The artifact was found near Magnolia Park and dates 1910-1930's? It may be from somewhere else. Top says EDEN Middle has a 4 and bottom has Park on it. Could this be from a Houston park?
  3. But one thing strikes me, if Luna Park was once called "Colonial Park" then it would show up in the directories for that period wouldn't it? I recall it being also named Venice but not Colonial. So may questions.
  4. I was reading the newspaper The Houston Post dated June 7, 1919 and came across an amusement park called Golf Amusement Park located on the corner of San Felipe (then Dallas) and Bailey streets. For Social Outings Real Place to Chat and Dance Go to the Golf Amusement Park on Sundays or any other evenings, under the shady trees and in the cool breezes. Everything is pleasant for Old and Young to enjoy themselves. Playing of all kind for the children. Dancing School in connection, if you want to learn the latest steps to see Alfred Reed, Dancing Instructor at the Golf Amusement Park, corner of San Felipe and Bailey streets. Alex – Manager Dee – Manager -Originators- Coming! Coming! Saturday night, July 28, the Chauffeurs' picnic and big band contest between Richardson's Jazz Six of Houston and Happy Six of Galveston, at Golf Amusement Park, San Felipe Street. Prizes for the one holding the lucky number. This park is now under new management and good order is guaranteed. Committee: L.N. Richardson, Dan Lewis, G.A. Allen, and Jesse Curtis. Music will be furnished by two bands and Davis' Louisiana Jazz Orchestra will play for dancing each night. Merry-Go-Round, Ferris Wheel, Whip, and other concessions have been installed and additional hippodrome features have been secured, which promise to make this gala occasion indeed. The promoters announce a program with a millions new and novel features. Warning! Warning! You'll miss the time of your life if you miss coming out to the Grand Spring Opening at the Gulf Amusement Park. March 5-15, Inclusive. Two big bands – Davis' Louisiana Jazz for dancing. Big Street Parade and Style Show. Millions of New and Novel Features. Management: Young Men's Color Carnival Assn. Alex Manager, President
  5. What's the story with the Electric Park in downtown Houston? Wasn't this simply a name change from the other 1900s Houston park? Either the Highland Park that was located under the present-day Interstate-45 highway? Or the Colonial Park near Fannin? If I recall correctly, Highland Park was developed by an electric street car company. The names ad up, but not the locations? This ad from The Houston Post dated August 15, 1907 lists the location: San Jacinto, between Caroline and Prairie. The Houston Post dated February 18, 1906 has the article: The New Electric Park and Theater The Plans of the Building and a Forecast of Attractions for Houston's New Amusement Place. Matters in connection with the new summer theater and park, "Electric Park," are being rapidly pushed and soon the contractors will be at work constructing the buildings and laying out the grounds. Herewith is given the architect's drawing of the front elevation of the park, showing the theater entrance and the grand stand. In regard to the light, Electric park is to be "electric" indeed. More than enough power will be turned on to supply the lights and the place will be as bright as day after dark. The contract for the state appliances has been let to Clancy & Co. of Buffalo N.Y. but wherever possible the management intends to use home materials and employ home labor. A total investment of at least $20,000 seems likely from present indications and the figure may run as high as $25,000.
  6. I was browsing the newspaper The Houston Post dated January 13, 1922 and came across a business listing for Winter Garden Roller Rink at Fair Park on Harrisburg Boulevard. From what I recall, there is also another famous park called Fair Park. I believe that was located in Dallas, and houses Houston's Monorail that was tested at Arrowhead Park. Admission - 20 cents
  7. I just saw this and thought it would be an intresting addition to the area. Looks like a waterpark near Katy Mills Mall. https://www.facebook.com/KatyTexas/photos/a.247109592060436.43711.246754612095934/725934494177941/?type=1&theater
  8. Adventure Bay water park on Beechnut ? What was the name of this place before it was Adventure Bay ? Anyone know how this place is still in business ? It looks like its really run down, and it continues to get worse. PLUS I never see anyone there ! If you have input on visiting it as a child, or recent story, OR EVEN better old pictures of this place, PLEASE post it ! Thanks ! Cory

  10. Today, on my quick drive home from downtown, I noticed that Baldwin Park has bright orange temporary fencing all over it - specifically around the outline of the trail and around each of the trees...likely a protective measure. Looks like they're finally gonna start on this thing...
  11. Per Bisnow, this memorial was recently dedicated in Memorial Park in Sugar Land. Haven't heard of using tilt-wall for this sort of construction before. More on the design and planning can be found here.
  12. I didn't see this anywhere else, so here goes... A new folk-art inspired greenspace called Smither Park is being planned for the 1/2 acre lot adjacent to the Orange Show. The park's development is being sponsored by the Orange Show in memory of John H. Smither. The design is by Dan Phillips (although I can't tell if he's doing the overall park layout or just the pieces within the park). Here's the website: http://smitherpark.org/Smither_Park_Website/Welcome.html ... and a rendering (found on the site): http://smitherpark.org/Smither_Park_Website/Welcome_files/shapeimage_1.png
  13. This thread was originally created June 5, 2019. I'm reposting / reupping this because this post and other content from me are no longer available on the forum. An archive link to this thread is coming. 2205 Patterson Street in Houston. I don't know the neighborhood but I think this is part of the Greater Heights. Street View from 2015
  14. Does anyone remember these old amusement places in Houston? what they were called? where there may be pictures of them? The ski slope at the intersection of 610 West Loop and Southwest Freeway which later became... The waterslide at the intersection of 610 West Loop and Southwest Freeway which finally became... Lone Star Amphitheatre at the intersection of 610 West Loop and Southwest Freeway OR HOW ABOUT... Malibu go-cart raceway and arcade at the Southwest Freeway Games-People-Play...I believe it was on Fondren....big 80's hangout with arcade, waterslides and go carts.. The little go cart place off westpark (Southwest Freeway ran in front of it)..the track was lined with red and white tires...
  15. Does anyone know anything about this swimming pool that's North off Bellarie Blvd. It looks like it's now an indoor tennis courts.
  16. What is your favorite park in Houston, and why? I really love Discovery Green and Buffalo Bayou Parks. Both of them for being catalysts for further development, and for being well-programmed spaces. I’d have to give the edge to BBP, though, because it really feels like you’re stepping into a totally different place when you take the trails near the water versus when you’re at street level! I just love how nicely planted it is- it feels very “wild” for being smack dab in the middle of some of the busiest parts of the city!

  18. Hi all, To anyone who is interested you are invited to attend the first official meeting of the JOE CAMPOS TORRES ACTION GROUP tomorrow (2/22/2012 @11:00 a.m.) at 2509 Navigation Blvd. to explain the objective of having a Harris County Historical Commission Marker placed in Moody Park, to commemorate and to keep alive the lesson of the May 7, 1978 INSURRECTION in the park, plus an update on the historical marker dedication on March 22, for EL BARRIO DEL ALACRAN. {Facebook page}

  20. Ran across this. Those running through this dusty corner of the board probably know it, but in case you don't, Spence Park is directly across the street from the East side of Kyle field. It hosts lots of organized tailgate parties on game weekends, but generally suffers from neglect most of the rest of the time. It's kind of blighty looking when it's not covered with tents. The plan in the link below is ambitious to say the least. It would be the A&M campus' equivalent of Discovery Green, taking a half-assed strip of grass next to a big venue and turning it in to a centerpiece. Not sure if anyone has actually identified how to pay for it at this point, but Scotch might if he stops by... http://cbe.tamu.edu/Data/Sites/1/allouruploads/presidentialactions/2017actions/071917aggiepark.pdf
  21. There is an effort underway by Christian Navarro (son of Yolanda Black-Navarro) to rename Settegast Park to Los Compadres Park. The effort is meant to commemorate an organized baseball team known as Los Compadres comprised of predominately Mexican-American players who played for the team at Settegast Park at various times from the 1950s up through the 1980s. Personally, I certainly support efforts to commemorate the history of Los Compadres through renaming the baseball field and/or a plaque or historical marker on site, but not by renaming the entire park. For anybody interested, the link to the Second Ward Super Neighborhood 63 Zoom meeting where the proposal is discussed is below. Password/code is h6Z!UzYV. Fast forward to around the 40 minute mark for the presentation by Mr. Navarro: https://us02web.zoom.us/rec/share/eDe_Ddz0ItgG7Yal1Y-j3j574ftd4qe2_SdYcC5MZf8y-6vMJRH2hFcbyvDAGxM2.VIyZBzr4XGnWruRk?startTime=1627946025000
  22. John Teas died recently and now the family is selling off the centenarian property for single home developments. Bah. 23. What was once a gas station, then a bus stop/transit station, will now, hopefully, become a park! https://www.chron.com/news/politics/houston/article/Houston-to-buy-Heights-Transit-Center-convert-it-12833013.php
