Baylor College of Medicine's first hospital in Houston was located inside of the Sears warehouse located on Lincoln and Buffalo Drive, now known as Montrose Boulevard and Allen Parkway. Found a good photo that actually shows BCM's inscription on the front of the 1943 building! Very, very cool. I do wonder the architect? Reminds me of Joseph Finger or Alfred C. Finn. In 1943, the business was called Baylor University College of Medicine.

Houston College moved from rented quarters to this campus of its own on San Felipe Road, today's West Dallas, in 1894. The sole remnant of the school's campus lies in the name of the College Memorial Park Cemetery.

I found this photo of Vicks Park which was taken in the year 1900. A brief description: A two story house on the top of a bank along an area of Buffalo Bayou known as Vicks Park. The area is now covered by the cloverleaf at Waugh Drive, Memorial Drive and Allen Parkway.

Houston has many examples of facilities that do not fit a particular neighborhood. Who would have that a tuberculosis hospital would have been appropriate right across the street from an entrance to River Oaks? But there it stood for decades without much controversy.

This from an email I received-- there are quite a few that show up for Saturday volunteering but they need more------ 156 trees have been tagged at the cemetery in hopes we can nurture them into being long term residents. These tree's positions need to be recorded on our survey. They need water. Some of the trees need a hug. There have been several trees and limbs that have fallen victim (literally) to the drought in the past month. These need to be moved into ready mode for our next dumpster day. So there is some chain saw work available! I promise the temperature will be less than 156 degrees, all morning. The fence location has been staked using Laurel and Hardy survey techniques, but you can now get a good idea of what it will look like and where it is going. Garden hoses will be welcome, drinking water and sunscreen are recommended, and if you want to help preserve the "Park" at College Park your help is desperately needed this Saturday, August 13 from 8am to noon at 3525 West Dallas.

Anyone have any opinions on the Jackson Hill Flats? I'm looking for a condo inside the loop and I really don't want to go higher than 170k if possible because I'm probably only going to be a here another year or so but my lease is due and taxes are killing me plus I hate wasting money in rent. For the price, they appear pretty good and I like the location. Any red flags here that you all know of? Or any other suggestions in that range? Thanks.

I managed to get ahold of a plan for the plot of land bounded by Bailey, West Webster, Gillette and cook streets. From what I understand this plan was universally disliked at the inital meeting. Have a look: http://www.bcbc.info/promos/park1.jpg

Surprised I'm the first to post this revelation (at least I think I am), but the Allen House is slated to be re-developed. Notices were on the doors of 3535 and 3505 Dallas and 3601 Allen Pkwy. June 1 closing. Mixed used development planned...kind of explains all of the recent structure torn down in the area. Surely the Chronicle will be on this news. As for me, well its been home for a bunch of years...

saw the "for sale" sign covered by a texas asbestos removal sign... is this a clue if the building is going for a revamp or demolition? (did a search and couldn't find another current thread.)

Is this guy b.s. or what? I haven't heard anything about it: "Dudes and Ladies, I was very upset when I heard from a business owner in River Oaks Plaza that later this year, early next, they are getting rid of the theater to put in a 30 story high-rise. word is, they are axing black eyed pea too, for a multi-level parking garage." You can read the rest here: http://members.boardhost.com/hands_up/msg/1151627265.html Anyone know anything?

So, I was talking to some coworkers today, and we got off on the topic of the flag on top of our building. One of the guys that had been there for many many years informed us that the US flag on the top of the building was once MUCH MUCH larger than it is today....he said that, in fact it used to drape over the building and cover up the windows of the 43rd and 42nd floors when the wind wasn't blowing. As to why we have a smaller flag now...well apparently when the wind was blowing at a good clip and 'ol glory was pulled out taut, it created so much force that it damaged the top 3 stories of the building that the pole mounts down through. The American General CEO flew the huge flag that he wanted, even though the engineers had told him it was a no no. Personally, I think the flag should be double or triple its current size....the mass of the building makes it look kinda puny.
