  2. While browsing old Houston maps I noticed the Contemporary Arts Museum was at the corner of Fannin St. & N. Braeswood Blvd. The map was dated in 1950. Earlier this week I was browsing old Rice's The Thresher magazines. In an issue dated September 23, 1965 I found an add for the The Contemporary Arts Museum which was located At 6945 Fannin Street. Does anyone have any images of the old building? What replaced this structure? Is this where the TECO (then Houston Natural Gas) plant is located? TECO's history states that in 1967 the Houston Natural Gas Central Plant was built. https://tecothermalenergy.com/about/history/
  3. If you missed riding the TEXAS LIMITED to Galveston back in the 1990s, there's a one-time opportunity on November 10, 2012 to ride there again as part of a commemoration of the revived Galveston Railroad Museum since the devastation of Hurricane Ike. The route will be over the former Santa Fe line instead of the GH&H line that the TEXAS LIMITED traversed. Scroll down to the very bottom of this link to find the large trip icon and click on it: http://www.galvestonrrmuseum.com/ Historically there were three railroad routes to Galveston and one electric interurban route from Houston.

  8. Pretty interesting exhibit and speaker series at houston center of contemporary craft going on. With its soaring expressways and seemingly endless geography, little defines Houston in the public consciousness more than urban sprawl. This fall, Houston Center for Contemporary Craft (HCCC) takes on the implications of this development pattern in the national exhibition, SPRAWL. Co-curated by former HCCC Curatorial Fellow, Susie J. Silbert and former HCCC Curator, Anna Walker, SPRAWL features 16 emerging and mid-career artists whose works deal with the urban landscape. Arranged in three sections, “Infrastructure of Expansion,” “Survey, Plan, Build,” and “Aftereffects,” which loosely define the phases of urban growth, the exhibition is intended to present a non-polemical view. As Silbert and Walker commented, “The topic of sprawl can be a lightening rod—depending on who you talk to, it can evoke visions of cookie-cutter houses and inefficient city planning or it can inspire discussions on freedom of choice and affordable housing. We wanted to harness that complexity to create an exhibition that looks at the totality of sprawl—the good, bad, and the ugly.” Speaker series Infrastructure of Expansion •October 18, 12:00 – 1:00 PM Ed Emmett, Harris County Judge •October 24, 6:00 – 7:00 PM Thomas Colbert, Associate Professor at the Gerald D. 13. Do you have an interest in volunteering for the Yates Community Archaeology Program? Volunteer opportunities Fridays and Saturdays, 8:30 am - 3:30 pm (11:30 - 12:30 lunch), till mid-December (except for Saturday Sept 25, morning only). We meet at the Yates House at 1314 Andrews. Some of us work in that yard, some under the Pullum House across the street, and some in our (air conditioned!) lab in the Yates House. If you would like to participate, or if you know others that might, you will be most welcome! They supply ice water, and they also have a few extra trowels if you don't have your own. Be sure to bring sunscreen, a hat, and wear shoes with closed toes (not sandals). Shorts are fine, but if you want to wear a halter top, bring a t-shirt or something to cover up more if needed. For more info, contact Carol McDavid of Yates Community Archaeology Program mcdavid@publicarchaeology.org http://www.webarchaeology.com
