I took a pic of the mural with the intention of maybe using it for a Bike Tag but decided not too since the gate is closed often. -
I was browsing The Thresher dated October 24, 1930 and came across a business listing for Dixie Golf Course located at 6105 South Main Blvd. "Just across the street from the South Gate." Was this apart of the Hermann Park Golf Course? Very cool find! Was South Main really a boulevard back in the 1930s or was this a typo? I believe the TMC area was actually called Uptown as well.

As I get older (52) I get quick flashes of a memory, not sure if it really is a memory. One that keeps popping up is a statue of the Charles Dicken's character Oliver Twist holding out a bowl. I see this statue somewhere outside the Delman Theater on Main Street. Is it possible that it was a promotional item when the film "Oliver" was playing in 1968? Anyhow, anyone remember this? And if not, can you recommend a good dementia doctor.

Just discovered a new HISD school in the Museum District called Southmore School located at 5200 Caroline Street. Found the photo of the school in the Almeda Place residential subdivision marketing flyer dated in 1922. The newspaper The Houston Post. dated January 23, 1924 contained an article about a string of robberies. The criminals broke into Southmore School showing the address of 5200 Caroline. Potter, Roberts and Ellis confessed to the roberry of the following places, according to police: Southmore School, 5200 Caroline street; Longfellow School, 2209 Charters Street; Fullerton School, 2803 Harrisburg Boulevard: the residence of S.H. Ferrill, 311 East Twenty-Third street; the home of V.L. Giles, 729 East 12-12 Street; the furniture store of D.E. Smith, 1014 McKee Street; and the residence of Jack Kennedy, 1120 East 7 1-2 Street.

I have a death certificate from 1957 showing that a cousin was institutionalized for 10 years at 1200 southmore blvd. Does this make sense?

Does anyone know where the park in the picture below was? it says Colonial Park Houston Texas. I know there is a Colonial Park in West U (Bellaire) but I found out that area was outside of the Houston City limits until some time around the 1940's, this picture looks like way before that time frame so It can't be that park or am I missing something. http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t118/Vago_Pachuquero/1012398_1397846847134865_884869356_n_zps168be647.jpg

This comes from what Marmer mentioned in the Ashby Highrise thread about Hobby's ownership and the demolition Cullinan's Shadyside. In Johnston's The Unknown City, it just states "Joseph F. Cullinan's home, Shadyside, was the first house built in the enclave of the same name. After Cullinan's death, former Governor and Mrs. William P. Hobby bought it; it was razed in 1972 and the property given to Rice University by Mrs. Hobby." From the New York Times (10/11/87): From the Houston Chronicle (09/24/00): And Stephen Fox's Rice University: One, I didn't know Rice ever owned it, and two, do you think she really demolished the home in a fit over the neighborhood not letting her build a high rise on the property?

I was reading the newspaper The Bellaire Texan dated June 22, 1950 and came across Alfred C. Finn's residential home. Alfred C. Finn, 4902 San Jacinto, annouced that he will receive bids for the construction of a new Security State Bank for Park Place.

I was searching Ebay or old TMC stuff and came across a rare? matchbook for Kaplan's Delicatessen Restaurant located at 5225 Almeda Road. How did this place compare to the original in the Texas Medical Center on South Main? (Wait, Kaphan’s Restaurant At 7900 South Main is run by a different owner?) Did anyone ever eat here?

I was reading The Thresher dated December 6, 1929 and came across an unusual golf course. Lilliput Golf Course. Course at Entrance of Herman Park across from Sam Houston statue. Also called the Lilliput Miniature Golf Course. Looks like it was owned by W.B.N. Miniature Golf Courses, Incorporated. Photograph:

Hermann Hospital - built in 1925, maybe 9 stories, looking at the picture. The other bldg. was named Autry House (built in 1921), built as a socializing house for Rice students, was 3 stories, was on what is now Fannin St. , says was next to the streetcar stop. Thnx again AIA - Architectural Guide, S. Fox. The Rice Administration Bldg. (1912) is now referred to as Lovett Hall. Also mentions a smokestack for the powerplant , dating to 1912. Looks like it is located to the right of the entrance gates, far back.

While browsing old copies of Rice's The Thresher magazine I noticed an add for Minit Man Car wash with two locations. 5001 S. Main, and 6900 Harrisburg. The add is dated February 24, 1961. Was this the place to be back in the day? Did anyone on HAIF go here? Looks like it's located near Museo Plaza where Mission Constructor's staging area is.

I was reading back issues of University of Houston's The EXtra magazine which was dated June 16, 1948. I came across this local business listing for a cocktail lounge called Congo Jungle Cocktail Lounge which was located at 5704 Almeda Rd. LY-9235. Looks like a year later in 1949 the lounge was renamed to Abe and Johnny Jamil's Congo Jungle Cocktail Lounge. I thought Abe Jamail owned another club in Southwest Houston. Was it in Midtown on South Main or on Buffalo Speedway? Does anyone remember this place? Any memories or stories? June 16, 1948. October 19, 1949.
