  1. Not sure where to put this...Mods, feel free to move it. Looks like Baxter Development is rehabbing the Bienville Building. Ran across a TDRL TABS registration for improvements to the building shell. https://www.tdlr.texas.gov/TABS/Search/Project/TABS2023003066 There's also a rendering on Baxter's website. https://www.baxterdevelopment.com/construction-and-development/project-three-9ygdt
  2. The giant restaurant/ballroom complex at McGown/San Jac seems to have some activity. There is a lot more boarded up and a new fence around the building seemed to appear. Anyone have any insights? Seems like it could be a good location and a spark for that side of the tracks.
  3. The TSHA article on Prince’s Hamburgers mentioned this company, Weber’s Root Beer Stand, located at 4509 South Main St. One of the paragraphs below: Prince established a small hamburger stand on Lemmon Avenue in Dallas in 1929. He ran the stand by himself and took orders, cooked food, and could be considered one of the first carhops in Dallas. Within a year, Prince looked for greater opportunity, and on a visit to Houston in 1934, he decided that city was the best location for his business. Enthralled with the business activity on Houston’s Main Street, Prince moved from Dallas to Houston and in 1935 opened his first-drive in an old Weber’s Root Beer stand at 4509 South Main. The contract said that the Weber name should remain for six months. After that time the “Prince’s Famous Hamburgers” name was launched in March 1936. Does anyone have any more information about the original Weber’s Root Beer stand at 4509 South Main? Pictures or postcards? Any memories or stories to tell?
  4. I was looking at the newspaper The Bellaire Texan dated May 13, 1959 and came across an usual location for the Alley Theater. Back in 1959 the Alley Theatre was located at 709 Berry St. in Midtown. Now playing thru May 30 on stage Tennessee Williams Orpheus Descending directed by Nine Yance. There also used to be a Alley Theater Academy which is very cool to see.
  5. Found this ad in the January 4, 1984 issue of The Southwest Citizen. I didn't even know Christie's Restaurant had a location at 3512 South Main St. Here's the other locations that I know of. I wonder if there are any store numbers? I see the 9200 was the latest addition in January 1984. The ad says "Since 1917". I wonder their original location? Christie's Restaurant At 5911 Bellaire Blvd. Christie's Restaurant At 3512 South Main St. Christie's Restaurant At 6703 South Main St. Christie's Restaurant At 9200 South Main St. Christie's Restaurant At 6029 Westheimer Rd.

  7. Club Bad Bing taking over Pub Fiction.
  8. It looks like Caydon’s properties in Midtown were sold at a foreclosure sale earlier this month. From what I can tell, this is about everything Caydon owned north of Drewery Place:
  9. What is happening to that great little Mid-Century Dovtor's office on Fannin, in MidTown? I seem to recall that it is a late Joseph Finger (or am I confusing it with a MacKie Kamrath?)? It sits on a corner and has an inverted point entrance and is stone and brick. Someone is modernizing the hell out of it. And then there is the old Shirar's Bicycle Shop...a Great Moderne relic...now beyond recognition.
  10. While browsing old copies of Rice's The Thresher magazine I noticed an add for Minit Man Car wash with two locations. 5001 S. Main, and 6900 Harrisburg. The add is dated February 24, 1961. Was this the place to be back in the day? Did anyone on HAIF go here? Looks like it's located near Museo Plaza where Mission Constructor's staging area is.
  11. Noticed this place while browsing old copies of The Rice Thresher. This ad is dated May 25, 1944. So, anyone ever been here? Was this the happening place on the weekends? Pictures or stories welcomed. I assume it's a club, and what does that phrase mean exactly? Looks like this was close to the Delman Theater? 4420 Main -Block With Delman-
  12. While browsing the old issues of University of Houston's The EXtra publication I came across this add for an auto dealership called Norman Cadle, Inc. The dealership was located at 3015 S. Main St. with a phone number of L-5774. The add is dated June 16, 1948. Anyone remember this auto dealership? "A square deals or no deal". Memories or stories?
  13. While browsing old issues of University of Houston's The EXtra publication I noticed an add for a local construction company called Brashear Construction Company which was located at 4824 Main St. The magazine is dated November 5, 1948 so it's pretty ancient. Anyone have any information regarding this historic business? Did Braeshear Construction Company close it's doors, or was it bought and merged with the big, corporate building firms we see today? Looks like a 2-story building stands here today. Any pictures of the original building?
  14. I was reading old University of Houston The EXtra publications and came across this add for a retail store called Houston Sport Shop located at 4717 South Main St. The magazine issue is dated June 16, 1948, so the sports store is ancient. Does anyone remember this store? Have any memories or stores? I wonder if the mom and pop business closed down, or if it was purchased by a larger company and merged into something bigger. I can't figure out where this building actually was. Google is showing me Main & Kirby near the Fiesta. The address should be in Midtown? Does the building still stand?
  15. Found this add in a University of Houston The EXtra publication dated November 5, 1948. It reads: The BEASLEY Co. Printing - Greeting Cards - Office Supplies - Stationary 4719 S. Main, Hadley 9972. Does anyone remember this store? Any memories or stories about this place? Looks like this was located where ARKA Modern Organic Furniture was and next door to the famous Cokin's Restaurant at 4803 South Main St.
  16. While browsing old issues I noticed this add for Kauffman's Cleaners & Taylors dated January 8, 1954. I wonder if there are any pictures of the building or sign around?
  17. I was looking at an old The Rice Trasher magazine dated September 7, 1944 and came across this business that made personalized glassware gifts. Esther McKenzie Glassware. Any pictures of the glassware? Pictures of the building? Looks like this is across from The Ion, so it would be an empty lot today.
  18. I saw a coming soon sign in the 2700 block of Milam last night, behind Les Givrales. Anyone heard anything about this place? Tax records seem to indicate its at 2704 Milam #C. Is it really a good idea to start a seafood restaurant a block and a half from Reef?
  19. Today, on my quick drive home from downtown, I noticed that Baldwin Park has bright orange temporary fencing all over it - specifically around the outline of the trail and around each of the trees...likely a protective measure. Looks like they're finally gonna start on this thing...
  20. Without fail, every night when driving home when I get to around San Jacinto and Elgin, there is a pungent, mouth watering smell of either cookies or cakes baking and its driving me NUTS! SOMEONE HERE KNOWS WHAT IT IS, TELL ME!!!
  21. It is the Magnificat House. They are the ones that plan to be a part of the housing that is proposed at 3300 Caroline St. http://mhihouston.org
  22. Founded by Ima Hogg on May 15, 1929, Child Guidance Center Of Houston served children with mental health disorders in the Houston and Harris County area. Found this while browsing the Houston Public Library's Digital Archives. https://cdm17006.contentdm.oclc.org/digital/collection/images/id/2299/rec/1
