  1. I was wondering if HAIF knew more information about this school. Who was the principal/director? Who just was B.K. Bruce? Found this in the publication The Red Book of Houston dated 1915. B.K. Bruce School at 1205 Bremond Street.
  2. I was looking around Ebay for historical Houston things and I noticed a skating rink from the 1940s!! This is interesting, because there was also another South Main Roller Rink located at the intersection of Main and Holcombe in the TMC. I wonder if this Midtown, 900 Blodgett address is the second location of this business? Actually, after researching, the M&H address was in the 1930s, so I believe this came after.
  3. I was searching Ebay for historical Houston items and found an unknown photograph of a large mansion located at 2317 Louisiana Street. I searched, briefly, in the libraries and couldn't find anything. I wonder the decade and date? Looks like the 1920s to me, but I could be wrong. Looks like a residential mansion, but could have been used as a hospital/sanitarium at one point. The top and bottom borders say "owl" on them. I wonder if there was any relation to Rice University? HAIF historians, any information on this one?
  4. Soil samples being taken at the private park. The rig is hard to see, but it's behind the gazebo.
  5. I was reading the newspaper The Jewish Herald-Voice dated June 16, 1938 and came across this business advertisement for 400 Dinner Club located at 4608 South Main Street. Is it just me or is this a rebranding and relocation of the other club called Southern Dinner Club located at 807 Gray Street? The New "400" Dinner Club 4608 South Main Dine and Dance in a Gay Colorful Atmosphere :: Outstanding Floor Shows and Danceable Music Every Night! "Air Conditioned" Phone L. 8909 Couvert: Week Nites- $1.10 per couple Saturday Nite- $1.10 per couple
  6. I was browsing the newspaper The Jewish Herald-Voice dated May 26, 1938 and came across this advertisement for Southern Dinner Club located at 807 Gray Street. Southern Dinner Club 807 Gray -------- Open From 8 a.m. "Where Houston Dines and Dances" "Air-Conditioned" Entertainment! It's always cool and comfortable at the Southern Dinner Club! 7. A New Pizzeria That Slings Pies Until 4 A.M. Will Open in Midtown Houston Dallas export Zalat is expected to make its debut this summer by Amy McCarthy Apr 19, 2021, 9:36am CDT Zalat, a rapidly growing, Dallas-born pizza chain known for its creatively topped pies, will soon arrive in Houston. The restaurant is set to open its doors at 510 Gray Street later this year, marking the chain’s first expansion out of DFW. “Houston was the most obvious choice for us,” founder Khanh Nguyen said in a statement. “We think many Houstonians love and appreciate great food that is served without pretense, and that’s exactly who we are.” Nguyen also has ties to Houston — he attended Klein Forest High School and the University of Houston before heading north to Dallas. As far as the pies are concerned, expect chewy, thin-crust pizzas topped with everything from classic pepperoni to elote-style corn, Nashville hot chicken, and pickles. There’s also a pho-inspired pie appropriately called the “Pho Shizzle.” Folks who dig dipping their pizza into ranch dressing should be especially excited — the restaurant’s “Srirancha,” a mix of sriracha and ranch, is a favorite among Zalat fans. Since it opened in 2015, Zalat has expanded from a stoner-friendly pizzeria to a major player in Dallas’s pizza scene, where it currently operates more than 10 locations. Whether or not it will have the same staying power as Cane Rosso, the Dallas-based pizzeria that opened in the Heights in 2016, remains to be seen. No official opening timeline has been announced just yet for Zalat’s debut in Houston, but expect it to arrive sometime this summer. Stay tuned for an opening date.
  8. Rendering of the South End Christian Church designed in 1922 by Alfred Finn. The imposing neoclassical edifice stood at 4000 Main Street and was constructed at a time when the South End was populated by many of Houston’s more affluent citizens. The Pastor was Dr. A.E. Ewell
  9. Love this old building glad to see someone else moving in.
  10. so this is my first post and i am really appreciative of the amount of information here. i have been wanting to photograph the central square (after driving by and seeing that huge clock a few blocks over) and by the time i get around to it there are fresh huge plywood boards around the first floor and broken glass in the street. are the boards really that recent? this was on friday around 4pm. there was actually one more newly broken window without plywood over it and glass in the street. i was only able to photograph the escalator and a wooden sales desk through the window. anyone know what happened? i have many, many questions about a few of the older houston buildings but i figure it is best to search this site for previous posts and ask whatever has not been covered yet. thanks
  11. Reddit Houston u/lolunix posted this pic of the fenced off McDonald's.
  12. I discovered a new hospital! The Turner Urological Institute located at 506 Caroline Street. The hospital was active in the 1930s and 1940s. Found in the publication: Texas State Journal of Medicine, Volume 38, Number 7, November 1942. Turner Urological Institute 506 Caroline Street, Houston, Texas B. Weems Turner, M.D., F.A.C.S. - Director of Urology and Dermatology. T.A. Andrews, B.S. M.D. - Urology. Holiday ad found in the newspaper The Texas Jewish Herald dated September 6, 1934:
  13. I'm thinking of purchasing a condo at 2016 main. How is the neighborhood? I'm hoping that someone can post pics of the building, besides the ones I've found online. The condo is very small (under 400 sq. ft.) but for that price, I think it is worth it. Maybe pics of the neighborhood? the building around this building or the people or the wild-life! something, anything. I'm moving from L.A. and will be studying at UH main campus. Thanks "y'all" (do people say that is Texas?) Here's one I found online, but it doesn't say much as to how the neighborhood is.
  14. Seriously, more social services! Feel like giving up on midtown becoming anything other than what it is...social work alley. I haven't regretted buying a home in the area but with more social services going up...I'm almost there. Does anyone have any more info about this place?

  16. Are the Greyhound or El Expreso bus stations ever going to move out of midtown/downtown? I realize its conveniently located near the downtown bus terminal, but now that the bus routes are not so centered around the downtown station, I dont see why it couldnt find a new home. Maybe closer to Amtrack or northeast of downtown?

  18. I was reading the newspaper The Texas Jewish Herald dated November 13, 1930 and came across a business advertisement for Colonial Miniature Golf Couse located at 3531 South Main Street. 19. I was reading the newspaper The Bellaire Texan dated June 27, 1946 and came across Dr. E.W. Bertner's residential home. Residents of Greater Houston are being asked to contribute toward a fund to raise $3,750,000 for the University of Texas' part in the Medical Center. The M.D. Anderson Foundation has earmarked $2,500,000 for this project if the additional sum can be raised to complete the $6,250,000 required for buildings. A systematic canvass is being made among business and professional people for contribution to the fund, but the public may also participate by sending a check to Dr. E.W. Bertner, president of the center, at 2310 Baldwin. This is a project deserving of support because we, the residents of Greater Houston will benefit financially. It is even more worthy from the humanitarian standpoint. In June 15, 1950 he lived at the Rice Hotel. Dr. E.W. Bertner, Rice Hotel, distinguished physician and guiding force behind Houston's great Texas Medical Center, was presented with an honorary degree of doctor of laws in present of 50 doctors, lawyers and business leaders.

  21. I was reading the newspaper La Grange Journal dated September 16, 1909 and came across Westheimer wedding article that specified the address of Mitchel Louis Westheimer's wife. For some time Jake’s friends have been worried over the fact that Jake disappeared every now and then and landed invariable at Houston, but the secret is out now. We reproduced herewith the announcement which appeared in Sunday’s Post: This evening Miss Carrie Westheimer and Jake Alexander will receive their friends at the home of Miss Westheimer’s mother, Mrs. M.L.
