  1. Not sure what to make of the vague description but it seems like Midtown will be getting a new bar in about 9 months... http://blogs.houstonpress.com/eating/2011/04/openings_closings_28.php http://swamplot.com/a-midtown-beer-bar-is-born/2011-04-01/
  2. Back in the early 1900s, Houston Methodist started out in a 4-story structure that resembled a residence. The hospital was simply called Methodist Hospital at that time. Dr. Oscar L. Norsworthy granted Methodist Hospital to use his hospital and then Methodist Hospital was chartered. Edit: It looks like the infamous Josie M. Roberts was the acting superintendent. Below is a photo of the old hospital.
  3. In the 1930s and 1940s the Texas Dental College was built near Main Street in Midtown at 1018 Blodgett Street. The building was designed by "star architect" Lamar Cato.
  4. Renderings finally posted in another topic. Very exciting. http://s.lnimg.com/attachments/A55B766C-A6A3-49E0-8EF2-BCB5680D4D1E.pdf
  5. In 1879, William Joseph Settegast (W.J. Settegast) lived at 2218 Sherman Street. Now Valentine Street. Just an amazing house! Would love to know the architect.
  6. Built in 1907, the Wiley Munn residence in Midtown at 2901 Main Street was a sight to see. Almost resembles the mansions in Quality Hill in downtown! Wiley Munn made his fame in the dry goods and department store business.
  7. Carnival staple when King Cake Drive-Thru from New Orleans opens Feb. 10-11 in a Midtown parking lot, 2808 Caroline. King cake enthusiasts Mike Graves and Tiffany Langlinais debuted the concept in the Big Easy last month and have taken the drive-thru to other Southern cities. They hope to bring some of the best renditions of the Mardi Gras dessert from renowned and up-and-coming bakers to people who love king cake. https://www.houstonchronicle.com/food-culture/restaurants-bars/article/king-cake-drive-thru-houston-mardi-gras-18653099.php
  8. Edwin Parker was a partner in a law firm a long with James A. Baker, and Baker Botts in the firm Baker, Botts, Parker, & Garwood Built in January 23, 1910 by architects Sanguinet & Staats. Once built, it became ownership of C.R. Wharton, an employee of the company. The house was located at 803 Hadley Street in Midtown.
  9. Built in January 9, 1916, for developer/owner Charles P. Jones, the architects Jones & Tabor built this small apartment building at Main Street and Truxillo Street in Midtown, Houston. Any historians on HAIF know the exact address?
  10. There was a thread for this property started by me in either 2016 or 2017. Since the error of a mod banning my account and deleting over five years worth of content from me, everything I contributed to this forum is gone. I was able to retrieve and save some things, but most of it is gone, including the thread for this property (sans one post made September 2019, a few weeks before all of my posts were "accidentally" deleted). I'll try to repost as much of the previous content I can remember (mostly Loopnet listings, archives and articles), but comments from other members and their photos won't be reposted. 11. When driving through midtown, I've noticed a bunch of development signs dated 2006, including a Fire Department museum and several mixed use developments, and some kind of plaza on Milam as well, I think. The signs say "coming in 2006" and it's currently 2007 so I was wondering... are these guys just late or have the projects been cancelled? It would be nice to see less empty lots in midtown.
  12. The architect George Dickey designed the Jehu Johnson-James Ross mansion located at 710 Hadley Street in 1882. I really like George Dickey's work. This is an awesome house and estate.
  13. Looks like a residential high-rise is (well, more likely was) planned for 3030 Travis St. Sometime between Jan. 2015 and Aug. 2015 the owners removed all leasing information from the strip center that sits on the site. I was going to dump this in the Houston: Potential thread but there appears to be some intent to build here, just may happen later rather than sooner. http://www.estudioarchitecture.com/# Street View: https://www.google.com/maps/place/3030+travis+st+houston+tx/@29.7429346,-95.3773422,3a,75y,323.82h,90t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m4!1s0XnkosqAYDeJkmiJkWPijg!2e0!7i13312!8i6656!4b1!4m2!3m1!1s0x0:0xc2661e4e68979a77!6m1!1e1
  14. I noticed a new sushi restaurant under construction on Travis (across from Escobar). here is their myspace: http://www.myspace.com/facuz and official webpage: http://www.wecravesushi.com/
  15. https://app.crowdstreet.com/properties/haven-elgin/?preview=true Likely somewhere in Midtown along Elgin St.
  16. Where is the location of the Old Charlotte Allenn school?
  17. I used to live in Midtown and always passed by the Kirby House. Does anyone know what business or organization is there? There is no signage at all. Probably some secret society planning to undermine urbanism in Midtown
  18. Back in the 60's, my Mom and Grandmother used to take my brother and I to a mexican food restaurant called Berthas. All I remember was the food was good and the restaurant was in a big white house with big columns on the porch. It seems like it was close to downtown. You parked on the street and walked up a long sidewalk to the porch. There was also another mexican restaurant that used to be a house but it was located on Canal, south of downtown. Can't recall the name. Does anyone remember these?
  19. The lot at 2800 San Jacinto has recently been listed for sale. Strangely, the listing makes no mention of Caydon's tower that's gone up across the street--one would think that would be a big draw for this property: https://www.loopnet.com/Listing/2800-San-Jacinto-Houston-TX/6537096/
  20. Couldn't find another topic to put this in. The Sacco Company store (part of the building at San Jacinto & McIlhenny) that recently burned is in the midst of remediation. Crews have been working there daily and all other building tenants have had their leases terminated. It appears the whole building will be remodeled.
  21. I was going to post this last night as well, but didn't want to post another project that was more of a vision. Thanks to largetexas for confirming this is a serious development. http://rogersarchitects.com/mid-main/
  22. Today I noticed a Joseph Finger building in Midtown. Originally built for Barker Bros. Studio in 1931. Photo I took today:
