I visit Escalantes in Meyerland Plaza a lot and I've always driven by this old garden style apartment complex. The old complex is located at 4600 Beechnut St. in the heart of Meyerland. While searching HAIF I noticed we didn't have a thread for this. I wonder how much longer this 1960's garden apartment will be around. I know a similar complex down the block at 4605 N. Braeswood Blvd. called Meyer Grove Apartments was demolished to make way for water detention for the flood-prone Meyerland. I doubt we'll see a high-rise here, but it's possible we will see your typical 4 to 6 story multifamily wrap. I wonder who the original developer was? Marvy Finger, Martin Fein, Ted Dinerstein, or Harold Farb? Website: https://www.meyeroaks-apartments.com/

Does anyone know if there used to be a payphone in Meyerland Park back in the 1980's-1990's, and if yes, where in the park it was located at? I also am curious how long that whale slide has been in the playground area? Any old photos/videos pre-2005 of the park would be very helpful.

TIRZ pitched as answer for Meyerland infrastructure woes https://communityimpact.com/houston/bellaire-meyerland-west-university/government/2021/09/08/tirz-pitched-as-answer-for-meyerland-infrastructure-woes/ It was on July 14 during the Brays Bayou Association’s monthly meeting that its president, Charles Goforth, presented to the neighborhood group an option for revitalizing the Meyerland area’s aging infrastructure: a tax increment reinvestment zone. “I’ve been thinking about it for a while,” Goforth said in an interview with Community Impact Newspaper. “Being somebody that is born and raised here in the community ... I keep looking at the state of the infrastructure, especially in the older parts of Meyerland.” Goforth’s vision for a TIRZ comes mainly because projects through both a Harris County Flood Control District bond program and those under the ongoing $480 million Project Brays flood damage reduction initiative have not been enough, Goforth said. Tapping into neighborhood tax bases along the Brays Bayou watershed, like Meyerland, is key to making significant headway on those projects, he said. Goforth, a realtor in the Meyerland area, estimates that the more than 2,300 homes in Meyerland constitute a tax base of more than $1 billion. Currently, the two nearest TIRZs to the Meyerland area are being considered in an annexation process—TIRZ 16, also called the Uptown Houston TIRZ, and TIRZ 25, also known as the Hiram Clarke/Fort Bend TIRZ.

http://images.chron.com/content/news/photos/05/08/12/b-histor.jpg Aug. 12, 2005, 12:28AM More historic markers ahead? City is weighing a plan to allow property owners to seek permanent protection for sites By MATT STILES Copyright 2005 Houston Chronicle In what would be a victory for preservation advocates, the City Council is considering a new ordinance that would safeguard Houston's historic sites by allowing voluntary designations of "protected landmarks." The effort, designed to strengthen the city's 10-year-old preservation ordinance, would allow property owners to seek permanent protection for historic buildings they own if the sites meet specific criteria. That protection would remain, even if the property ownership changed. Read More...

Found this rendering w/board the other day. Looks like a big improvement! Actually sort of reminds me of the Beldens Shopping Center, the Chase bank on the corner.

I went to Johnston the first year it was built. When I first got there, I was a little shy about the nude swimming for boys and girls at the indoor pool. I think the girls went three days and the guys two days, and then it was switched the next week. A friend who went there after I did said that he couldn't remember when it was discontinued or why. Does anyone know the story? Can you imagine the outrage if this were to happen today?

That's not the house in Meyerland by Cohen is it? If you want to systematically make copies of the modern house plans with the $100 deposit system, then that would be a great idea. The place Houston Mod uses for printing may offer a discount, though I know because I don't deal with that directly. How many moderns do you think we're talking about? PM me if you want to make a project borrowing the plans. JasonThis HOA actually lets you check them out with a $100 deposit. If you don't bring them back they cash your check. If you bring them back they give your check back to you. I still have the plans for the house we were trying to buy. I torture myself with them regularly. If the house is being bought by someone wanting to tear it down then I will ask the HOA to keep the plans. Who knows maybe someday we will build a new house on the old plans. It was designed by Charles Sawyer. I believe before he became an architect. As for the other house I will check to see if the plans are available and who the architect was. It's sad to see it torn down as it's such a unique home. The living room was round and the builder told me the oven opens in a gull wing fashion. Here is a pic from a couple of years ago before the mold took over. I'm usually poor at posting pics so forgive me if it doesn't show up.

I was raised in Westbury - and my mom used to take me to Meyerland plaze for my back to school shopping. Our Route took us down W. Bellfort and until we got to on Runnymead and then we would turn left away from Cunninghams' RX and Beldons. We would drive down Runnymeade and turn on to S. Rice heading North to JC Pennys. There was an unusual house on the corner of S. Rice and Runnymeade. It was box shaped with a flat roof, adn it had what I deemed "a small sculputure garden" on the S. Rice side. The house also had unsual glass brick with cutout shapes in them. Does anyone have any information regarding this home?

I'd like to get some feedback on the future of Meyerland specifically, and the inner southwest near the loop in general (Woodside/Woodshire, Meyerland, Willow Meadows/Bend/Brook, Westbury). We purchased a home in the area within the last few years, and from our viewpoint (at least in Meyerland), there has been a lot of money reinvested in the ranch houses (of course with a few teardowns and McMansions). It seems that a lot of young professional couples are moving into the area to support this change. On the flip side, however, many articles have referred to the demise and deterioration of the "first ring" suburbs over the next decade to twenty years (that has already begun in some places). Granted, these articles typically are focusing on Eastern cities, but it seems that Meyerland (and further, places like Garden Oaks, Oak Forest, Briarmeadow, etc.) fit the definition, but are the areas more likely to suffer in Houston places one "pass" further out (e.g. more like the ring near Beltway 8)? So let's keep it wide open. Any thoughts?

Pretty Cool, no? The pics are lame, but the virtual tour shows the outside, which is cool. It sits across Braeswood from the bayou, so there's that.

Went to the lovely park next door to the 610/Meyer Park Walmart and across from the AMC movie house I've been to lots: http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa187/manos77035/BuffaloBayouandmore035.jpg Tried to feet the cute ducks with some old bagels we had and they didn't go for it. Looked across the street and noticed that the AMC 16 was closed. Had no idea. I think it was kind of going downhill from last movie seen there. During the prevues the sound went off and didn't come back on until the feature film. Didn't like that as I love the prevues. http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa187/manos77035/BuffaloBayouandmore038.jpg http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa187/manos77035/BuffaloBayouandmore039.jpg
