  1. I just learned (or discovered) about this today! There was a 30-acre Meyer estate in River Oaks? Never knew that. They had property all over! Downtown, Montrose, The Heights, Meyerland, and now River Oaks! Would love to see photos of their homes, or gardens. Any pictures out there? This would have been in the early to mid 1920s. Edit: The oval park was already established by the Meyer family? I thought the oval park was built during redevelopment. wow! Those homes had to be huge! Found via: River Oaks Scrapbook, volume 6 (April to October 1928). River Oaks Corporation Opens New 35-Acre Section East Of Addition's Drive. Tract is portion of old Meyer Homestead, located south of River Oaks Golf Course; oval park named in honor of Mrs. Rebecca Meyer. River Oaks Corporation, through Hugh Potter, president, Saturday announced the opening of the 35-acre tract of new property lying immediately east of River Oaks boulevard and south of the River Oaks Golf Course and Country Club. The tract is sometimes known as the Dow-Meyer tract, being apart of the old Meyer homestead. It was formerly owned by the three Meyer brothers, Joseph F. Jr., George and Frank. The large oval park lying in the center of the property has been named Rebecca Meyer Park in honor of Mrs. Rebecca Meyer, mother of the three Meyer brothers. This park is one of the outstanding features of the new River Oaks residential area. It will be completely landscaped, beautified end equipped with playground paraphernalia for the children. In order that it may be accessible to every home site in the new development, an 11-foot hedgerow walk has been laid out leading north and south from two sides of the park. The new River Oaks property comprises 35 acres of ground, 108 new home sites that are to be placed on the market immediately. It is conveniently accessible to the shopping center erected at the southern entrance to River Oaks a few months ago and is on the River Oaks Express bus line, Mr. Potter pointed out. Improvement of the tract has already begun under the direction of H.A. Kipp, vice president and engineer for the corporation. The tract will be developed and improved in the same way as the eastern sector of River Oaks, the Buffalo Drive sector and the original sector. Improvements, maintenance, landscaping, and architectural control will be the same as in all other sections. These improvements include concrete and asphalt streets, gas, water, lights, telephone, storm and sanitary sewers, concrete sidewalks and River Oaks ornamental street illuminations. A part of the new River Oaks development will be restricted to one-story homes, but there will also be home sites available suitable for the construction of two-story homes. Most of the home sites have a frontage of 65 to 75 feet, but there are a--
  2. I was reading the newspaper The Bellaire Citizen dated May 25, 1950 and came across one of the famous Meyers residential address! Sadly, this doesn't look like a mansion. Located in the area of West University/Rice Village, it was a typical home. I believe Frank Meyer built his mansion a few decades later at 9111 South Post Oak Road. Tried to look for an old aerial view of the home but there's too many trees blocking it! I believe the original house is still there? Seniors Mark Time 'Til Graduation With Parties Parties for girl graduates-to-be continue as commencement day draws closer-- Mrs. Frank S. Meyer honored their daughters Gloria Meyer and Frances Berryman, with a tea Saturday afternoon at the Meyer home, 2336 Bolsover.
  3. George B Meyer was probably the brother the son of Joseph F Meyer, Sr. The 1923 City Directory shows George Meyer as a VP at the Joseph F Meyer Company. In 1923, he lived at 202 Avondale. I'll do some more digging and see where the Holcombe house was. It looks like the house was at 1907 Holcombe, which is the Ronald McDonald House now. From teh 1950 Census:
  4. I was looking for information regarding the Meyer Estate on the side of the South Loop and discovered that the Rice University Fondren Library that has a few physical boxes of archives regarding the Meyer family. One box contents says: Photos of the Loraine and George B. Meyer house on Holcombe Blvd. Overview The George Meyer Family Photos and Memorabilia contains family photos, photos of the Loraine and George B. Meyer house on Holcombe Blvd. in Houston, a catalog of the company business, and a resolution on the death of Joseph F. Meyer. Dates: 1916 - 1967. Does anyone recall this property? I am looking for photos, or an address. Thanks! http://archives.library.rice.edu/subjects/1114?&filter_fields[]=published_agents&filter_values[]=Rogers%2C+Karen+Hess
  5. I was looking at the Standard Blue Book of Texas Houston Edition dated 1907-1908 and came across a few cool, old, homes. I found the Residences of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph F. Meyer. Very cool! I wonder where this was located?
  6. Yea that is a good article, I guess I should ask about the history of the Spanish Style home that one has been there since before 1944. AS seen in the pic here. http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg60/dlfswi/historic-houston/bras-mansion44.png 1953 pic http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg60/dlfswi/historic-houston/bras-mansion53.png 1964 pic http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg60/dlfswi/historic-houston/bras-mansion64.png 02 pic http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg60/dlfswi/historic-houston/bras-mansion02.png Also thx for the responses guys I appreciate it.
  7. Do any of your guys have photos or info on what I have always known as the "old Meyer property" at the NE corner of 610 Loop South & S. Post Oak, right across the freeway from the MeyerPark retail property. I know there were some scenes from a movie shot at this location, there appears to be the old footprint of a home, and there is (or was) a small retail building at the SE corner of this property that used to be a gas station ( i think ). Anyone have any citable information about this property or any photos? HCAD.org doesn't describe it at all except for the northern edge next to the bayou as being HCFCD (Harris County Flood Control District) ownership. Kevin Jackson Moderator edit: The Frank K. Meyer residential property was located at 9111 South Post Oak Road in 1967. In present-day 2022, the Harris County Flood Control District water retention pond has an address of 4502 South Loop.
