  1. I would love to see the Astrodome turned into a new and much bigger Space Center Houston. Since we didn't get any of the retired Space shuttles, we could build mock-ups/replicas and memorials dedicated to both Challenger and Columbia. IIMAX Theater, Science display, etc. All the space vehicles at NASA now could easily fit into the dome. The new Space X vehicles when they retire. A huge visual screen like the "globe" in Vegas, that would be an amazing tribute. Yep, NO shuttles for Houston, at least the ones that were actually in service and went to space. Still mad about that. Discovery went to Viginia at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, Endeavor went to the California Science Museum, and Atlantis went to Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Thats why I say let's rebuild Challenger and Columbia and display them as memorials for our lost patriots at the Astrodome / (New Space Center Houston.)
  2. In 1938, the DePelchin Faith Home bought a 10-acre campus in Memorial at 100 Sandman Street. This is the decade(s) where Ben Taub was President of the DePelchin Faith Home. Photo of the historic, now demolished, building:
  3. Ernest Bel Fay lived next to his brother Ernest Fay. In the 1920s/1930s they both an 18-acre plot in the Uptown/Memorial area located at 105 North Post Oak Road. Decades later, his house now serves as one of the buildings on The Fay School campus. The "star architect" John F. Staub designed the home. https://www.thefayschool.org/ Here's a photo of the old house back in the 1930s.
  4. Finally found a good picture of the Albert Bel Fay house located at 99 North Post Oak Lane. The house was built alongside his brother's mansion, Ernest Bel Fay which is located at 105 North Post Oak Lane. In the 1930s, brothers A.B Fay acquired 8.29 acres while E.B. Fay's site was 7.26-ares. John F. Staub was the architect for both homes. Ernest Fay was a lumberman, while Albert was an oilman. Aerial photograph of both homes. Albert's home was situated on top.
  5. "Billionaire Tilman Fertitta has purchased a prime parcel near Memorial Park, opening an opportunity for him to expand his business along one of the Inner Loop's busiest corridors. https://www.houstonchronicle.com/business/real-estate/article/tilman-fertitta-buys-memorial-drive-property-18568104.php Maybe Fertitta want's to build a restaurant or get in to the high end condo craze that are also going to be built near here. hindesky
  6. Never knew about this Mackie and Kamrath building until earlier this week. Was this all M&K or was there additions? Anyone ever play here? Sounds like a cool club! I've been loving the Memorial neighborhood(s) lately Edit: Looks like this was built in 1969. https://www.houstonracquetclub.com/
  7. This week I studied and learned about the old Harry Wiess estate that eventually developed into the neighborhood Stablewood. Located across from Memorial Park, near North Post Oak Lane, these homes are very, very nice. Rivaling the mansions in River Oaks. I had help during my research from a coworker who knows the family and a fellow HAIF member. Thanks guys. Here is present-day neighborhood called Stablewood. Stablewood, then called the Wiess Estate, in 1944: The home up close and zoomed in. It appears there was a horse oval riding ring behind/in front of the home? Imagine having your own riding ring? Just so much wealth! On the right side of the estate, there are also two other oval rings. Mr. Wiess either owned multiple riding rings or they were apart of another family, possibly Will Hogg's Tall Timber Stables? Harry Wiess' home and stables was built in 1930 and designed by the famous socialite architect John F. Staub. Today, the 3-acre parcel still exists and is owned by the Elkin's family, who have the property ownership listed under a corporation. H.C. Wiess's daughter married into the Elkins family. It appears that Harry Wiess left the property to his daughter, Margaret Wiess-Elkins. Margaret Wiess-Elkins was born October 26, 1922. She was the daughter of Olga and Harry Wiess, a founder of Humble Oil. I was told that the Wiess Stables, or "The Stables", or "Stable Set" became a party house. The property contains a pool and tennis court. Researching into the party house idea, it could be a different mansion all together? The book from Stephen Fox revealed all sorts of information about the Wiess Stables. Fantastic reading if you haven't read it yet. The following images are credited to Mr. Fox's great work. The country houses of John F. Staub by Stephen Fox. Wiess Stables, entrance (southeast) front with swimming pool and bath house to the left. 8. This week I came across William Hogg's personal stables! A little confusing, was this instance of San Felipe actually Dallas Street? Or maybe West Dallas? Will Hogg developed the neighborhood Tall Timber in River Oaks, just outside of Memorial Park. I assume the Tall Tmber Stables was apart of the neighborhood development. Tall Timber Stables San Felipe Road / Phone Hadley 2951 Saddle Horses - Boarding Renting Exercising - Show & Pleasure Horses Schooled - 130 acres in the pines, adjacent to River Oaks and the 1500-acre Memorial Park and its miles of bridle paths.
  9. Another one of Maurice Sullivan's work is the St. Mary's Seminary located at 9845 Memorial Drive. I would assume this was built in the 1920s? Do we have an exact date? https://smseminary.com/
  10. I was looking for old skating rinks in the Houston area and found a Facebook group of people who used to visit this place. When did the Carousel Skating Rink located at 9190 Old Katy Rd. open? When did the skating rink close? Any memories here? I assueme this was in the 1970s? The Facebook group had a lot more pictures if anyone wants to see more..

  15. NRP Group is developing a 4-Story and 326-Unit multifamily project in the Energy Corridor. https://www.nrpgroup.com/ Apparently it's the old Kickerillo family mansion. http://www.city-data.com/forum/houston/2850981-rumor-mill-what-will-built-site.html The Kickerillo family mansion, a 12000+ sq feet 1970s contemporary sitting on several acres of land at the west end of Memorial Drive, has just been demolished after flooding badly during Harvey (the entire property sits within the 500-year floodplain).

  19. State board approves demolition of senior living facility at 2100 Memorial https://communityimpact.com/houston/heights-river-oaks-montrose/city-county/2019/09/05/2100-memorial-demolition/ The Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs has approved the demolition of an affordable senior living complex that was flooded during Hurricane Harvey and has since faced legal obstacles from residents. Some of the last remaining tenants at 2100 Memorial Drive, Houston, have until March 1, 2020 to voluntarily move out. If all tenants vacate before then, demolition can take place earlier, TDHCA Director of Asset Management Rosalio Banuelos told board members Sept. 4. The building, which originally was a repurposed Holiday Inn hotel, will be rebuilt with five stories and 196 units. It will remain in use as an affordable senior living facility, the Houston Housing Authority confirmed. The existing facility had 197 units. “If this place of went to commercial developers, the prices on the sales or rentals would be astronomical, so it’s so good that we’re taking this action … preserving this incredible site for affordable housing,” TDHCA board member Leo Vasquez said. The decision marks the first significant progress in the project following a two-year long legal battle that tenants initiated after they received notice shortly after Harvey that their leases were terminated and they must vacate the property within five days, court documents state.

  21. When I was shooting progress at the Gateway at Spring Valley project, I noticed a sign for a building of similar size called 1001 Campbell just across the road. Couldn't find much about it online. Most refers to a project being developed by Lincoln Property, but with a different design. This is the only one I see at present with the rendering on the sign: https://www.vts.com/spaces/1001-campbell-1001-campbell-rd-3rd-floor-suite-300 http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w208/houtosme/DSC04232_zpsa7hhlskz.jpg http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w208/houtosme/DSC04242_zpszdnnhb79.jpg
