Anyone know what's going on behind the Lyric Centre, Smith and Preston? Just heard from a friend of mine who said he saw some interesting things while crews were doing work in the parking lot. He says crews were digging and found what he says is the basement to the old Brazos Hotel. Apparently, workers found bathtubs, two large boilers and ornamental ironwork. I went by early Tuesday morning and saw some type of underground concrete structure that could appear to be a basement. There were some windows facing west. Why a basement would have windows is beyond me, though. It seems like the original building was bulldozed, but the basement remained intact and was paved over. By the time I took some pictures early Wednesday morning, work crews had put up some wood to protect the windows, I guess. Sorry for the poor image quality. http://img340.imageshack.us/img340/3338/undergroundeb8.jpg

I recently purchased some postcards of the old Hotel Brazos in Houston. I live in Fort Worth and do not make it down to Houston very often. I was wondering if anyone could tell me if it still stands. My guess is that it does not as I was unable to find much information about it on the web. If it has been torn down, can anyone tell me when that happened. Below are some scans of the old postcards. http://dismuke.net/ftworthforum/hotelbrazos/diningroom.jpg http://dismuke.net/ftworthforum/hotelbrazos/grillroom.jpg http://dismuke.net/ftworthforum/hotelbrazos/lobby.jpg http://dismuke.net/ftworthforum/hotelbrazos/outside.jpg http://dismuke.net/ftworthforum/hotelbrazos/park.jpg

Kudos to the current owners (Club Quarters - who weren't named in the article...) for taking the steps to get this designation. Joseph Finger would be proud. http://www.bizjournals.com/houston/stories...63&ana=e_du http://www.clubquarters.info/houston.asp http://hotels.arch-ive.org/txst

I noticed in the Houston Business Journal that the Intercontinental Hotel on the West Loop near Westheimer was going to change to a Royal Sonesta. I am not familiar with this brand. Is this an upgrade or a downgrade from the Intercontintal? http://www.bizjournals.com/houston/morning_call/2012/05/intercontinental-hotel-changes-brand.html Another hotel I have been meaning to ask about for a long time is the old Holiday Inn that was on the northbound West Loop between Richmond and Westheimer. It closed a while back and the branding went away to be replaced by small vinyl sign above the door reading Hotel 31. Is this hotel even open? And it seems like it's in a fairly decent location - literally minutes to the Galleria - why hasn't something better happened to this building considering all the other Galleria-area activity?

Found an undated .pdf about the building when googling about (http://har3.commgate.com/photos/pdf/fs/174981_3.pdf) after taking the pic below. I have ever heard anything about the building, but thinking about Texas Street (referred to as Avenue in the link and formerly on the side of this building) development that is coming along, I wonder if this will ever be worth anyone's while to renovate. A website called loopnet states that it is off the market. http://i60.tinypic.com/14bnye.jpg

It my research of hotels, I came across the Derek. I think it is near the Galleria. Is it similar to the Hyatt Regency, size, amenities, etc? I noticed on Hotel.Com that the rates are about the same. I meant to say "in" my research of hotels. Just a typo.

While riding the light rail for the first time yesterday, I had to use the bathroom. So I decided to check out the Hotel Icon's bathroom. Man was it nice. It even had special paper towels with their logo printed on them to wipe your hands. The restuarant downstairs .... quite impressive, Bank by Jean Georges. Go check it out. Hotel Icon

Can anyone enlighten me as to the status of the Magnolia? I have heard that it is for sale, which would not be altogether surprising to me, given the state of affairs. Info most appreciated. Juniper

Work has started on one of my favorite downtown buildings. It will be called the Palace Hotel, located at (I think) Congress and LeBranch. Beautiful building, but surrounded by a huge parking garage.

Sourced directly from Marriott Development Corp out of the Dallas office. JW Galleria which opened in the mid to late 1980's and is owned by the Marriott Corp subsidiary REIT, is slated to be sold and rebranded as a "Non Marriott" branded hotel within the near "immediate" future. With the soft opening of the new JW Marriott Downtown scheduled for September 18th 2014, and the full ramp up to take place within the final quarter of 2014. It would not be financially feasible for the current JW Houston (Galleria) to design and complete a renovation, to a standard that wouldn’t diminish and hurt the JW Brand. Apparently having 2 JW Marriott brands in one city within such close proximity was never the intent of Marriott or Pearl Hospitality.

Omni Houston, Hilton Garden begin construction Two Houston hotels have broken ground on new projects. Omni Houston Hotel broke ground Wednesday at Four Riverway in the Galleria area on what will be an expanded ballroom and spa. When finished in June 2008, the hotel will have 26,000 square feet of ballroom space and a 6,800-square-foot spa. The general contractor for the project is Turner Construction Co., and the architect is Morris Architects, which designed the hotel, originally built in 1981. The spa, set to open in August 2008, will be for hotel guests as well as Houston residents. Meanwhile, American Liberty Hospitality has broken ground on a new Hilton Garden Inn at Interstate 10 and Dairy Ashford Road. The Houston-based company's hotel, to be completed in August 2008, will house a combination restaurant/lounge and Hilton Garden Inn's signature Pavilion Pantry offering sundries, beverages, microwavable foods and snacks.

Is there a Hilton Garden Inn being planned for downtown? Last weeks planning agenda had "Hilton Garden Inn CBD Subdivision" listed in the Consent section. For some reason I'm not able to download the .pdf with the details so I can't see what zip code it's in or any other info. Maybe someone else can?...

It just came to me that the only decent looking large chain hotel ion downtown Houston is the Hilton Americas connected to the GRB. The Hyatt looks horrible, and so does the Doubletree, the exterior of these hotels in downtown need to be updated soon...
