  1. Last week someone on this forum told me that if I had stayed in Houston that I probably would have attended Milby High School. I graduated from high school in Beaumont in 1976. I attended Kindergarten at Park Place Elementary School from 1963-64. Is there anyone out there who graduated from Milby in 1976 who might have also been in that class with me at Park Place Elementary?
  2. I attended back in the 70's and my second grade teacher, Mrs. Abbs was my nemesis. I remember being forced to run around the whole field during P.E. seemed to be a chore also. Gosh, all I seem to have are bad memories of this place. Anyone else have recollections ?
  3. http://www.houstonisd.org/HISD/portal/arti...1588495,00.html A new small magnet high school will be established in Houston Community College Southeast. It sounds a lot like Challenge Early College, which is at HCC West Loop
  4. Why the heck is HISD closing Will Rogers Elementary in the Greenway area (It has plenty of students)? Those of you who read HAIF know that it's because HISD sold the land. Now the people zoned to Will Rogers either are zoned to: * Memorial Elementary (the area only consists of Memorial Park, so nobody is sent to Memorial Elementary) * Poe Elementary (Subdivisons east of Weslayan, including The Greenway Condominiums and much of Upper Kirby) * St. George Place Elementary (subdivisions west of Weslayan and south of the bayou, including Afton Oaks) A map is here: http://www.houstonisd.org/vgn/images/porta...0414A-2maps.pdf
  5. A new Houston ISD alternative high school called "International High School" is scheduled to open in the HCCS Central Campus in Midtown. See: http://www.houstonisd.org/HISD/portal/arti...3229316,00.html International High School, which will have no more than 400 students from grades 9 through 12, is scheduled to open in 2006. Students may begin taking HCC classes when they are juniors.
  6. Now known as Hogg Middle School in the Heights. Anyone know when this school opened? It looks like 1920s or 30s. The reason I ask is that I was at an estate sale in the lovely neighborhood of Norhill recently and found, in an old, dusty box in the back of the garage, some of these old light fixtures. There were 10, all matching and with matching globes. The style is commonly called "schoolhouse" as they were often used in schools, commercial buildings as well as homes from the teens through the 30s. Two of the globes are over 12" across, which is quite large for a 1922 bungalow, which is where I found them. They were wrapped in newspapers from 5-26-75. I'm wondering if anyone who attended Hogg Junior High back in the day might remember fixtures like these there. The reason I mention Hogg is because the husband of the woman who owned the house and passed away was the principal there. I also found some very large window pulleys, weights and sash chain that were too hefty for a normal sized home. He died in '94 at 85 years old so he would've likely have been principal there from maybe the 50s-70s. His name was Rollins. Did they possibly do a remodel in '75 and Mr. Rollins couldn't bear to see them get tossed?
  7. Jean Hines Caldwell and Moreno Elementary Schools will open next school year. According to the Chronicle, Caldwell has terrazzo floors and naturally-lit hallways (with ceiling-high windows). Caldwell also has science rooms with computers and art rooms with kilns. Two early childhood centers, Farias and Mistral, will also open this year. This is part of a plan to offer free preschool to low income Houstonians within HISD's boundaries. HISD's site: http://www.houstonisd.org/HISD/portal/arti...1165324,00.html
  8. South End Junior High School, located at 1300 Holman street. I know that HCC is using the old San Jacinto High School as a part of HCCS Central. However, I wonder if HISD can buy the building back and remodel or tear down and build a brand new building for a new school. Perhaps people who are zoned to Gregory-Lincoln want a zoned school that is closer to them than Lamar (the current zone school for much of the Gregory-Lincoln area) is. However, HISD could mainly make this school into a magnet school that could relieve nearby high schools such as Lamar. I'm not sure if HCC is willing to let go of the San Jacinto building, though..
  9. Clinton Park Elementary School (which had 158 people in the 03-04 school year) closed after the 04-05 school year ended; all Clinton Park students will be rezoned to Pleasantville Elementary (which had 394 people in the 03-04 school year). What do you guys think about closing really small schools?
  10. A new elementary school will be built for the Galleria area that will relieve nearby schools. The School @ Post Oak will relocate to the St. George Place school when it opens, as will Briargrove Elementary. Briargrove will move out once the new Briargrove campus is complete. St. George Place will also take some of the zoning boundary of Will Rogers Elementary School, which is closing because the land it is on was sold.
