  1. Just curious what happened to all the federal money the city has received for the restoration of this site.
  2. I was researching the different locations of the infamous Southland Elementary School. A map I found online has me and a few HAIF members confused. One map says a school near Brays Bayou was the Almeda School. Then another map says it was the Southland School. I wonder which is correct? @JLWM8609states this several years ago: Southland Elementary never closed down. It first opened in 1915 on Allegheny St. Another structure was built on Dixie Dr in 1949. It's address was changed from Dixie Dr. to Tampa St. in 1978 when a new wing was added, and it's name was changed to Ruby L. Thompson Elementary school in the 80's. It will be moving to a new facility at 6121 Tierwester for the Fall 2007 semester. There was a farewell ceremony today for the old facility, I attended it since I went to Thompson from 1992 to 1994. The school location for this topic could be on Allegheny Street? Then why does the map specify Brays Bayou near Fannin Street? My information came from the newspaper The Houston Post dated in the 1910s and 1920s. The map I found is dated 1920. Southland School to Get Books For Prize. Southland School, out near Pierce Junction, which won the prize offered by the Harris County Public library for the best collection of wild flowers will be awarded a set of five nature guides Monday Night. The prize was donated by the Out Door Nature club and will be presented at the closing exercises of the school. Southlands near George H. Hermann Park. Property high and well drained. Just south of Brays Bayou, where the Gulf breezes are unobstructed and where the cold Northers are shut off. The place to buy and build your home right now. The SOUTHLAND School is new and modern, and started the term with an enrollment of 30 children. Quick and dependable transportation is now in operation by Mr. John Dobbin; fare 5 cent. Lots 50x100 feet and larger, none smaller. Prices still low and terms so easy you will wonder how we can do it. Harris County Investment Company Binz Building - Houston, Texas George W. Graham, Sales Manager - Phone Preston 996 Contract awarded for the new school at Southland Terrace. As announced Thursday, the contract for the above school building to be erected in Southland Terrace and to be known as the Southland school, was awarded to James Shapley & sons, and its erection will be under the supervision of Lane & Dowdy, architects The building is of that general type, that has become so popular for school purpose, in that it has the high basement, which at any future time can be changed into classrooms. In the supper or main story, are three large class rooms; the two in the rear may be thorn together and used for the auditorium, the state and dressing rooms being build as permanent fixtures. each rom is provided with cloak room, heating apparatus for the winter and cold air ventilation for the warm weather. The school will be located on Block No. 42, Southland terrace, this entire block having been given by the Harris County Investment Company for this purpose. Those living in the vicinity of the Southlands are to be congratulated on this latest improvement, as it is a strong indication of the city's growth southward, and the development that will take place around George H. Hermann Park, this building being but a short distance from the east entrance of the park. Street Map of Houston 1920 - Showing Wards. . The incorrect map, Geological Survey (U.S.) Bellaire Quadrangle map, 1921, lists Southlands as Brays Bayou School (on Almeda Road.)
  3. I was reading the newspaper The Bellaire Citizen dated March 23, 1950 and came across a school listing for the Southland Elementary School located at 3535 Dixie Dr. The ad was for a religous meeting from minister E.C. Coffman of The Riverside Church of Christ. It goes on to say a "new" location of the Southland Elementary School. I know Southland Elementary (Now Thompson Elementary?) has been located at several locations around the South/Southwest/Southeast side of Houston. They can't seem to find a permanent location!
  4. I was driving home down Leeland and decided to turn up onto McKinney and, while taking a pic of the Eagle Bottling building, I went back to my car parked on Palmer and noticed for the first time an old red and white building. While taking a couple of pics of it, a woman named Mickey Phoenix came out and gave me a short history of the place. There was originally a schoolhouse built in the early 20th century on the site and it burned down and the current structure was built in its place in 1918. It was an elementary school in the HISD Colored system until it was turned into an administration building for the same system in the 40s. She knows it's named after Charles Luckie but knows nothing about him. Apparently it was the only Colored schoolhouse not named for the street it was on. She bought it in 1992 and it was completely gutted, filled with water, broken windows and full of junk. She cleaned it up, replaced the plumbing, sewer, etc., restored the original cypress windows (some are there but boarded up) and has turned it into her loft-style home. The lot is 28K sq ft and she said the top floor was 3800 so the building would be 7600. It also has a large garage-like structure on it that served as the school system maintenance bldg. She's not really able at this point to bring it to its fullest potential so, although she loves it, she wants to sell it to someone who will preserve it.....for 1.2 million. Would be a great HAIF clubhouse, no?
  5. Never knew about the BCM schools around town. Here's another one located in third ward. https://www.houstonisd.org/domain/40476 Students will have the opportunity to earn high school credits, explore pathways in health and biomedical science, and become ready for challenging high school academic programs.
  6. Awesome looking school. https://www.houstonisd.org/domain/46312 Vision Statement: Every student will engage in a rigorous and integrative health science curriculum guiding them to make innovative 21st century contributions. Mission Statement: In order to prepare students for the careers of tomorrow, we will provide them with engaging health science experiences through cooperative learning and technological integration.
  7. Does anyone have any pictures of the Houston Gardens Elementary that is on Homestead Road from the 1960's or 70's?
  8. Edit: This was designed by Jones & Tabor Architects a long with Rezin D. Steele. I was in class of 93 there and I suppose I started this thread cause I read some great ones on other schools. It would be cool to find someone who went there at the time around me. Lanier was something else. The building was magnificent and historic; 1929 was when they built it. As a kid I was just overwhelmed by how big the school was. Anyway, what are your memories of the school and who are the standout teachers? The school used to be so segregated in terms of who came there to learn something and who came there to eat lunch and go to gym. The vangaurd program was not all that hard but just involved tons of busy work. I think I did more homework there than in all of high school and college combined. I do recall that they used to burglarize the lockers in the gym dressing rooms quite a bit. The juvenile criminals were so brazen they would do it out in the open with everyone watching. They are probably in adult prisons being sodomized each day these days so oh well. Of the teachers a few stand out in my mind after all of these years: Mr. Siros - I will remember this guy till the day I die. He taught theater arts on the 3rd floor in that room with college style seating and painted all black. Whenever he was losing an argument or the class got loud he would scream "hey" and everyone would shutup. When we were in other classes you could hear this guy screaming from down the hall and you knew he was going insane. Mr. Siegel - 7th grade English lit. He was dating the Spanish teacher Ms. Barazi from across the hall for a while but when she dumped him he decided to become gay overnight. The dude was really creepy and would talk about weird stuff like how rubbing oil on your body to tan is dangerous in the sun. WTF? Mr. Wilson - 8th grade reading This guy was AWESOME! His clothes were always ironed to perfection and he spoke so well meaning he varied sentance structure and used advance vocabulary at a middle school level. His professionalism rubbed off on his students and I am so glad I decided to take his class instead of a foreign language so I could take an extra year of gym in high school. Mrs. Klemm/Ms. Miller - she was the 6th grade math teacher that had all sorts of love life problems. I think she was divorcing her husband while we were in her class. Anyway, she had an obsession with alcohol bottles that squirt to clean the slides on overhead projectors. The immage of dry erase marker watered up is burned in my mind for life. Mr. Yeargin - 8th grade English Lit. ...this guy was way too sophisticated and polsihed to be an 8th grade teacher. I felt pity for the man cause the students never respected him. I suppose having been forced to read Charles Dickens and Bronte bothered the kids and I admit I did not like it at the time as well. I dunno, this guy seemed highly intelligent to me. Mr. Garret - 7th grade science....he was working on his masters to get to become a marine biologist so he did not care much about what we learned or did in class. Rice uinversity had built a science lab in Lanier and we were using email to talk to kids in the UK back in 1992 (a very high tech thing for 13 yrd olds at the time). The emails were just BS....not a hint of educational content...more along the lines of "Hi how are you?" "Fine and you?"......This guy used to give etra credit like crazy and make us hold it until grade cycles were ending. Then you took up the papers he signed and he added your points. He issued so much EC people ended up with 108 points on a 100 point scale. He always made sex jokes as well. Mr. Holliger - WORST teacher in the school. I understand he is still there. He went to UT and played basketball there until his knees went out. God this guy only taught chemistry and physics to the 2 kids in the room that got 100% of what he was saying. He would have these TAs work as slaves for him to write his notes and lessons.
  9. After years and years of back and forth between HISD, the architects, the school, and the community, this one finally broke ground in late March early April. This is a reconstruction of Bellaire's existing school. Originally part of the 2012 Bond referendum, this is anticipated to finally bring this massive bond to a close. Personally, I'm amazed this one ever got built. Lets just say this wasn't an easy project for those involved to develop, and there was a lot of chaos, but all of that aside the important thing is that its happening. Developer: HISD Architect: PBK Estimated Completion: 2021 (students will move back in), 2022 (final completion) Budget: $106,724,000 Article about groundbreaking (March 28th): https://blogs.houstonisd.org/news/2019/03/28/bellaire-hs-gathers-to-celebrate-start-of-construction-on-new-building/ Site Plan: Render (for some reason the only publicly avaiable render...is of the parking garage portion...oh well)
  10. Does anybody know who designed Mirabeau B. Lamar Sr. High School on Westheimer? Who carved the map of the State of Texas abpve the auditorium? Anyone have construction photos or old photos of Lamar?
  11. New school for arts sought By NANCY SARNOFF Copyright 2009 Houston Chronicle Oct. 17, 2009, 1:26AM A downtown business group wants to see Houston's High School for the Performing and Visual Arts build a new home in the Theater District. Where exactly the school would go and how a new building would be financed hasn't been determined, but there are some prominent individuals supporting the move. HISD spokesman Norm Uhl said there have been discussions, but they've all been preliminary. Bob Eury, president of Central Houston, said the group has a list of possible downtown sites and that the architecture firm Gensler was hired to work on the plan because the company was involved in an earlier proposal to relocate the property. And the link..
  12. http://www.readingwell.net/landmark/Book0349.JPG I did a search and unless there is one maybe we can merge. Jackson Junior High school as we called in back then still stands on Polk street near Dumble on near East End. I clearly recall as a 13 years old kid seeing numerous trophies and awards in the main hall behind glass cases. I was always mystified as to how far back the items went back. Some started around 1930's to present 1974! Yikes! Who were these people and what ever became of them? I wondered. This school is one of many historical buildings that seldom get recognition as far as I know. The 70's were a bizarre time to be here. Many fond memories of times in the area and the kids you knew and of fun teachers. I could not find one single photo of the school anywhere so if anyone can advise where to get please divulge or better yet please add. I recall my 3rd floor History class had a fantastic view of the downtown skyline. It has had many changes/renovations since I left but I can never forget the craziness. By mid 70's it was mostly afros, bell bottoms and rock n roll!
  13. I went to Fannin Elementary School during WWII. Could someone tell me if it is still there? I think it was bounded by Louisiana and Smith and Anita and Tuam. If there, who now occupies it, and could a picture be taken? I would sure like to see if it still looks like I remember it. Even though this picture is very old (1909), it hadn't changed much between then and when I went, except there were fire escapes that had been added on the sides and back. http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y256/57Tbird/Fannin1909.jpg
  14. Jan. 23, 2005, 12:42AM Thanks to the Eastwood Civic Association for their leadership in this. More info here. WHAT'S THAT? Copyright 2005 Houston Chronicle Karen Warren / Chronicle The former Rufus Cage Elementary, a mission-style school building in the East End. • Size: 20,000 square feet on 1.1 acres • Location: 1417 Telephone Road • Year built: circa 1910 • Fate: The building was on its way to being sold to the highest bidder, but East End neighborhood activists persuaded the Houston Independent School District to work with them to find a new use for this historic building with the goal of preserving the property. But there's no clear plan yet for the property. • Etc.: The former Cage School was included on Greater Houston Preservation Alliance's Endangered Buildings List in early 2004. The property has been used as a supply warehouse since 1983, when the current Cage Elementary opened. "What's that?" is a weekly glance at a significant real estate project that's shaping Houston's future. Send ideas to nancy.sarnoff@chron.com.
  15. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/headli...ro/6109559.html HISD proposes that Carnegie Vanguard is rebuilt next to Worthing, with the cafeteria and gym shared by the two schools. Worthing would also be rebuilt. Worthing parents are okay with the idea, but many Carnegie Vanguard parents do not like the idea at all and are vehemently against it. Why can't HISD simply rebuild Carnegie where it is and then rebuild Worthing off of 288?
  16. that do indeed have in there collections older historic annual school year books. I know that on several occations a numer of knowledgeable people w/n this group have stated that the Julia Ideson research center of the houston library sys. have a great collection of local historical docs on file @ that facility. So my question to those of you that have been there have you ever noticed if they have old year books @ the Julia Bldg? Respectfully Danny McLean
  17. Good Afternoon , hope your day goes well ! Anyone heard of any development where a conv store was located Mr. M ? Also out of curiosity did Reagan High just get a make over or did the school expand onto 13 1/2 ? Just wondering why the development for that school ? thank you "make it a great day"
  18. Any reaction from those about HISD's plans on getting rid of Wheatley High School despite protests from the community ?
  19. As part of the closing of Dodson, much of Midtown is being rezoned from Blackshear Elementary to Gregory Lincoln Elementary: http://www.houstonisd.org/site/handlers/filedownload.ashx?moduleinstanceid=51135&dataid=101587&FileName=031314OA_POST.pdf (see attachment F-2) Many of the parents interviewed in this story, back when J. Will Jones was closing, didn't like the idea of being zoned to Blackshear http://www.houstonpress.com/2008-12-04/news/backlash-upon-backlash-at-hisd/ - Maybe they will be happier today?
  20. Does anyone remember this? I was in the 6th grade at Horn Elementary in September of 1959. They told us to go straight home, but would not tell us why. I knew that Kolter Elementary was named after one of the teachers who died. A few years ago I worked with a lady who was the substitute that took over Jeanne Kolter's classroom after her death. You will need to scroll down to read the part about Poe School. http://www.texasranger.org/dispatch/7/Gooding.htm
  21. There is a great new website about River Oaks Elementary, with a history of the neighborhood, of the school, and a large collection of class photos from the 1930's through the 1970's at http://riveroaksalumni.org
  22. Any Fonville Jr.alums from the early 60s out there?
  23. Does anyone have information on what is happening to the old Robert E Lee Elementary school off I-45, at 2101 South Street? Workers have torn down the shell of the school a month ago but have since re-framed it and begun cleaning up and rebuilding it's innards...
  24. Hello! We are moving to the Heights from the Cypress area and were wondering if HISD Magnet Schools are near? I've Googled Hogg and Hamilton Middle Schools. Does anyone here have any reviews or opinions on these two schools? Or recommendations nearby? How about Frank Black Middle School? Thanks for your time
