University Breaks Ground on $3M Arts Center By Jennifer D. Duell HOUSTON-Cultural art lovers today will celebrate the groundbreaking of the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts, a $3-million undertaking tied into the $4.5-million expansion and renovation of the Wortham Theater Complex. An official groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. today in the Fine Arts Quadrangle at entrance 16 off Cullen Boulevard. The center, which will be housed in the Wortham Theater Complex, will include exterior and interior work to enhance the lobby space of the existing facility, provide office area for the Mitchell Center and add new rehearsal space. "It will be a nice addition to the campus," says John Dennis, project manager for Dallas-based Cadence McShane Corp., which is in charge of the expansion and renovation. San Antonio, TX-based Lake/Flato Architects Inc. is providing architectural services for the center's demolition, renovation and construction. Dennis tells GlobeSt.com that the project will take about nine months to finish and will require 35 to 50 construction professionals to complete. Cadence McShane will initially demolish the interior of the existing performing arts center and reconstruct 15,000 sf on two floors. The area will house classrooms plus ballet practice and rehearsal rooms. "There's a lot of wood paneling, acoustical plasters, stainless steel window frames, metal panels and cut stone," Dennis describes. "[The renovations] really complement the existing building." While the theater itself will retain the name Lyndall Finley Wortham Theatre, the building as a whole will be renamed to the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts. The project was funded primarily by a $20-million gift from George and Cynthia Mitchell, along with a grant from the Wortham Foundation and Allen Becker. The center will create a collaborative alliance of the university's premier academic and arts departments in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. The alliance weds the art department, Blaffer Gallery, creative writing program, Moores School of Music and the theater school.

Brown Convention Center and construction of the attached 1,200-room Hilton Americas-Houston hotel four years ago. The 700,000-square-foot addition, which nearly doubled the center's exhibit space, would finally make Houston a player in the lucrative convention industry. That, in turn, would create jobs and generate other economic benefits, city leaders promised at the groundbreaking. But was the city's investment in the center really worth it -

Parkwood is at OST and Cambridge, just west of the VA Hospital. I understand that it's owned by Baylor, and is a large brick garden apartment complex with over 100 live oaks on the property, hardwoods, good square footage, and very reasonable rents (try $690 for 1233 sq. ft. 2 BR + den apt.) Most of the residents work in the Med Center, obviously. Many of them are post-docs and researchers, lots of Asian families. Lots of the families planted gardens there. Residents were given notice on September 1 to vacate by November 1. It's going to be demolished. Anybody know the history of this place? I think it was built around 1948. Who designed it? What's going up instead? I assume all the live oaks are history, they are already cutting them down on the VA's eastern border. If you want any free landscaping (crepe myrtles, wisteria, rubber trees, etc. ), now's the time to dig 'em up. Any good suggestions for apartment alternatives in the area?

MD Anderson Mid Campus Developments. I didn't see any other threads referring to this project nor could I find anything about it elsewhere... At any rate, I saw this sign earlier in the afternoon. I wasn't sure of the intersection (I think it's Braeswood @ Cecil, and there's a traffic light there) but it is just east of Fannin in the "new" south side of the TMC. Here's a photo of the sign w/ rendering. Pardon the quality, but it's fun to try shooting at a red light and at an odd angle nearly into the sun. The Memorial-Hermann Hospital in Sugarland in being built. There is a rumour that a lot of the staff will transfer from the TMC location to the Sugarland location. I often wonder how long it will take before the Med Center begins to influence more development south of the bayou (even along South Main). They already have smaller offshoots like TIRR Memorial at S. Braeswood and Kirby, but w/out room to grow north due to the park, I would think chunks of land along S. Braeswood (or the rundown apt complexes near Reliant) could eventually turn to something that better serves the Med Center.

I remember reading an old MDA master plan that said the ROC building at Braeswood & Holcombe will eventually be redeveloped. The single story building sits on such a high profile corner that there is much better opportunities here. This address and corner once housed a high-rise multifamily/hotel development called Park Towers Apartments. Hopefully something tall again rises soon! I stopped by this weekend and took a picture of the street sign.

I'm looking at TMC's website and I see only a handful of billable surface lots that remain. Looking back at historic photos of the medical center, these surface lots get developed into tall buildings. One day, the TMC "M" surface lot will house a building. Just depends when they run out of space and need to build something. Even a parking garage would be more beneficial than a surface lot. It would hold more cars.

Old Braeswood POA sent out a notice for a meeting regarding construction of the new DeBakey High School in the medical center. Per the notice it will be built "on the site of the Hornberger Conference Center." I guess this means the last piece of the Shamrock is coming down? UMP is composed of two medical office buildings. Addresses are 7501 Fannin and 7505 Fannin. I always liked University Medical Plaza 1. Great addition to the southern part of the TMC. Med Center Crowne Plaza to turn out lights Mary Ann Azevedo Houston Business Journal After more than three decades in operation, the Crowne Plaza Hotel Houston-Medical Center will close its doors next month. The closing comes on the heels of last month's purchase of the property -- located at 6701 Main St. -- by Baylor College of Medicine. The Crowne Plaza will permanently close its doors on Dec. 18, according to the hotel's Web site and Baylor officials. The property is one of three Main Street tracts that Baylor purchased from Houston-based The Redstone Cos. in a transaction that closed on Oct. 11, according to Baylor spokeswoman Lori Williams. The medical institution has also purchased a 74,000-square-foot tract that currently houses a Wells Fargo bank, as well as a 67,000-square-foot vacant tract across the street at Main and Southgate.
