  1. While driving down South Wynden Drive I came across this fancy brick office building. Here's some photos I took of the building.
  2. I was wondering what the new CenterPoint Energy Texas Medical Center Substation will look like. I thought I would stop at the CenterPoint property off Westpark Drive that's located on Newcastle Drive in Bellaire. I believe there are different uses for both sides of the street? On one side you have the actual power plant, and the other is used for communication/power towers? What are these weird objects?
  3. I searched HAIF and couldn't find any mention of this historic company founded by John Kirby. I found a cool brochure from 1921 of the Kirby Petroleum Company and thought I would share. The field was located in Breckenridge, Texas.
  4. Found this in the publication Gulf Coast Oil News 1917-01-13: Iss 14 and wanted to share with HAIF. A cool, viewpoint, from the old days! In a few hours, I'll post the history to the site. Apparently the Westheimer family owned it prior to G.H. Hermann? Crazy! View On Hermann Tract Recently Sold For a Million When George Hermann, late philanthropist of Houston, bought the land on which the wells shown above are located, paying 25 cents to $1.00 per acres for it, he little thought it would ever be worth more than a million dollars. The tract was recently sold for $1,200,000 he money to be used to erect and endow a hospital in Houston, in conformity with Mr. Hermann's will. Humble Oil Field Humble, Texas FJ. 5. Cool! I wonder where exactly was this office building? Found the article in the newspaper The Southwest Citizen dated August 31, 1950. Well, I wonder if the building is still there? Depending on the money of the land, it was probably demolished and a new building took it's place? Does anyone remember this company, or business? Oil Co. To Build Office Grounds for the new $250,000 Triangle Refineries modern covered office building at Kirby and Nottingham were broken Monday by J.B. Saunders, President, West University Place official and other company officers. The building contract calls for completion in six months, when the company ill move from its present offices in the Neils Esperson Building. From 75 to 100 employees will work in the two-story building, which will cover 16,500 square feet. The structure will be reinforced with concrete and masonry. Salmon colored bricks trimmed in natural stone will set off an all grass front. There will be 50 offices in the new Triangle Building. Mahogany and walnut panel with deep carpets will decorate executive rooms, which open onto a landscaped patio. The building also will have a kitchen, employee lunchroom, dining terrace and covered parking area. Musak will provide music in all the offices. The building was designed by Lenard Gabert and contra ted by Fretz Construction Company. J.B. Saunders, President of Triangle Refineries, Inc. takes the first dirt from the site of Triangle's new office building. Watching are K. Schroter, Whitt F. Johnson, WUP Secretary, W.C. Buschardt, Jr., WUP Councilman, H.H. Raborn, Vice-President, and C.D. Tinsley.
  6. Looks like George Hermann acquired this local electric company called Woods Electric Company. As the name states, the founder of the business was named ____ Woods. (Forgot his name, I'll need to look into this!) A little confusing. This was not the Baker-Meyer building in Market Square? I wonder if this was next door then. A Meyer business was, eventually, located in this same building. Maybe Joseph Meyer had two locations next door to each other? From the newspaper The Houston Post. dated April 21, 1907. In Bankruptcy. Two petitions, one involuntary and the other voluntary filed. In the Federal Court. The proceedings involve the Woods Electric Company of Houston and the Emanual Schwartz of Hallettsville. The petitioning credits in the involuntary case against the Woods Electric Company and the amounts due each are: George Hermann, $500; F.W. Heitmann Company, $26.66, and Fuller-Cook Hardware Company, $10.20. In the petition it is alleged that he directors of the company met on April 12 and adopted a resolution admitting the company's insolvency and its inability to pit its debts. This admission is alleged as an act of bankruptcy and upon it the petition as filed. The company, of which George H. Hermann is President and J.J. Settegast is Secretary, is engaged in trading and mercantile pursuits in Houston--
  7. Noticed this small building in the 1950 Sanborn map and researched the address this week. Good times. From the publication The Oil & Gas Journal dated 1952-08-11: Vol 51 Iss 14 Oklahoma Contracting Company, 6512 Hines Boulevard, Dallas, Texas as a joint venture with Houston Contracting Company, is laying 68 miles of 24-in between Houston and the Brazos River for the Rancho Pipe Line Company. One spread is working from a field office at 1100 Old Spanish Trail, Houston. Raymond Law is superintendent. Gene

  9. Found an awesome magazine called Modern Hospital, released 1952-11: Vol 79 Iss 5. You can read the publication on archive.org. Great website for historical items! As with any library, you can "check out" any book/magazine and "return it" an hour later. The magazine shows an in-depth look at the Texas Medical Center portfolio (in the ~1950s) including floor plans of old hospitals! I might create new threads with the information I found, but I wanted to focus on the Texas Medical Center Power Plant & Laundry Facility On Fannin Street. Power Plant and Laundry A power plant and laundry, owned jointly by the Methodist Hospital and St. Luke’s and Texas Children’s hospitals, provides heating, air conditioning, engineering and maintenance service and laundry. Methodist Hospital has a 50 per cent capital investment in this facility and St. Luke’s Hospital and Texas Children’s Hospital together own a 50 per cent share. In this plant also are general maintenance shops, woodworking shop, paint shop, and so forth, all to be used for the benefit of the three hospitals. The linen will be jointly owned by the participating hospitals and will be billed out on a pounds used basis. A thorough analysis was made before this joint power plant and laundry was undertaken and the following savings were believed obtainable: Initial construction saving, $40,000 to $50,000. Laundry equipment saving, $18,000. Power plant operation, $12,000 to $15,000 per year. Laundry operation, $12,000 to $15,000 per year. This joint facility of the power plant and laundry of the three hospitals will be operated by a manger of the facilities who will be responsible to the administrator of each hospital. All service will be billed to the hospitals on a cost basis. Building Number 11: Building number 11: The article that I transcribed above:
  10. I'm confused. Looking at a 1950 Sanborn map and I see a Houston Lighting & Power Co. West Junction Power Plant located on Holcombe Blvd. I believe this is the same parcel of land that had the two Holcombe & Meyer mansions. The mansions predate the power plant? I lined it up, I see Cambridge, Staffordshire, and Holcombe. Cool find!! When was this demolished? They rebuilt on the opposite side near Fannin and Brays Bayou? There's a CenterPoint Energy Plant At 6955 Fannin Street. Current area, presumably.
  11. I believe the energy plant on Fannin & Braeswood/Pressler is CenterPoint. Don't think it's TECO? This past month there has been law enforcement stationed within the plant. I can only guess this is due to the recent rise of utility plant attacks? I wonder why the constant guard? Kind of scary, but they are protecting it.
  12. I was reading the newspaper The Bellaire & Southwestern Texan dated October 18, 1967 and came across an overlooked Hines development. Electric Living Center Will Give Many Answers To Homeowners The Electric Living Center, a new facility to serve as a consumer information center on all phases of electrical usage in the home, is being built by Houston Lighting & Power Company. The all-electric Center will be located on a 1.12-acre tract fronting on the east side of the West Loop (Highway 610) between San Felipe and Westheimer. Its proximity to the Southwest Freeway and Post Oak Interchange will make it easily reached from all parts of Houston. It is being built to HL&PCO specifications by Gerald D. Hines Interests and will be the second building completed in the Smith Office Park complex. Architects are Neuhaus & Taylor, consulting engineers, Chenault & Brady. General contractor is Harvey Construction Company. Floor-to-ceiling glass walls will form the 50-foot front and two 100-foot sides of the building, which will be heated and cooled by two electric heat pumps. Exposed structural material will be bush hammered concrete. The appliance display area will be in the front (west end) of Center. The general public will be able to inquire here about electric cooking, heating and air conditioning, home and garden lighting, kitchen design and arrangement, proper home wiring and the use of small appliances. The two electric kitchens--- One on the stage of the auditorium and the other at the rear of the building. --- Will be used for cooking demonstrations to groups meeting in the center. A luminous ceiling will light both the auditorium and display area. The ceiling’s light intensity will be controlled by a dimmer switch making infinite variations possible between zero- and 200-foot candles.
  13. I was browsing the newspaper The Texas Jewish Herald dated September 13, 1928 and came across an advertisement for The Tower. U.P. Broussard was the developer of the 1920s Houston Speedway (Bellaire Speedway) race track that was located on Stella Link near where present-day Pershing Middle School is. Compliments of the Season. 16. I noticed a small remodel permit that was pulled. This 2-story office is sitting on very, very valuable land. I wonder when the old 2-story office building will no longer be feasible.
  17. I was browsing the newspaper The Bellaire Citizen dated September 21, 1950 and came across a business ad for Humble Service Station located on Old Spanish Trail at Old Main Street Road. Pretty cool! Humble gas stations are no long around. Seems this was the grand opening as the ad says "They'll be orchids for the ladies at the opening of the new Humble Service Station - Gala Opening Saturday." Looks like the manager was W.G. Lopas, Jr. Agent. I forget if there's a gas station there today?
  18. I was reading the newspaper The Southwest Citizen dated September 21, 1950 and saw an article about this. Obviously this fell through? Were there any renderings or drawings of this project? Was this the black building in between the Crowne Plaza Hotel and the O'Quinn Medical Tower? This week I discovered a mid-rise black building that looked hidden (or out of place) in the medical center. The black building was not located on OST/Old Main though. The article states: Halliburton Oil Well Cementing Co. will build a $130,000 office and laboratory building on Old Spanish Trail, near the Old Main Street Road.
  19. Noticed the widening of the dirt road a long with a new fence and CenterPoint sign. What's the deal with the independent horse stables way down there? Thought I read years ago that there was a lease agreement between the original landowners and CenterPoint Energy. The family was able to keep their horses on a patch of the land. Is there a name for the stables? I looked on satellite, to find a oval track and a few old buildings/shacks. The oval track is to give the horses exercise? Didn't think there was a racing track here?
  20. Found this ad in the October 3, 1947 issue of The Southwest Citizen. Very cool to see Glenn McCarthy's business. I believe he actually had several companies.

  24. Saudi Arabia Stuns World With Massive Discount In Oil Sold To Asia, Europe And U.S. Oil prices are down more than 30% this year. Oil prices are poised to drop dramatically after Saudi Arabia announced a stunning discount in oil prices — of $6 to $8 per barrel — to its customers in Asia, the United States and Europe. The world's second-largest producer this weekend also said it will actually boost oil production instead of cutting it to stem falling prices, in a stunning reversal in policy from just two days ago. The benchmark Brent oil price already plunged 9.4%, to $45.27 per barrel, on Friday. The drop came after Saudi Arabia, the rest of OPEC and Russia failed to agree on production cuts to combat falling prices due to fears that the coronavirus epidemic will halt world economic growth. https://www.npr.org/2020/03/08/813439501/saudi-arabia-stuns-world-with-massive-discount-in-oil-sold-to-asia-europe-and-u-
  25. CenterPoint Energy's Hiram Clarke Generating Station at 12045 South Main Street. Weeks ago I noticed a demolition permit at this address. Looks like a part of the site will be turned into Powerfuels' Houston Clean Energy Park. Center Point Energy will still occupy some of the parcel?
