  1. While the GRB at least made a stab at mid-1980s post-modern stylishness, this monstrosity was ugly from the word go. The ugly plain exterior is offset by a tacky, low-quality interior, highlighted by a strange plastic "sculpture." At least the front facade of the Wortham is partly hidden from the street by the trees in the plaza in front.
  2. My source has been telling me to keep this under wraps for a while but he gave me the go-ahead today... Brookfield Office Properties is actively consulting with an architecture firm to completely renovate One Allen Center, inside and out. The start date is sometime in 2014. No renderings yet. Brookfield is doing this "to remain competitive in the CBD while new office towers are springing forward" and older ones are also considering renovations. The plan is to give it a sleek new redesign. I can't go into any further detail but my source is 100% legit. He is the person that is actively working with Brookfield, and he is also working on the JW Marriott renovations as well. Really hope we can get another person to confirm this as well but it is 100% happening.
  3. http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/m...politan/2930993 Dec. 4, 2004, 12:15AM Holiday lights shine on a revitalized downtown Officials hope the displays draw people and help boost retail growth By ALLAN TURNER Copyright 2004 Houston Chronicle Visit our Holidays page for recipes and ideas to enhance this holiday season. Once virtually empty and vaguely menacing, downtown Houston's nighttime streets are being clothed in holiday finery by boosters who hope colorful lights and oversized ornaments will draw people to the business district to visit, shop and possibly live. While there are festive lights at City Hall and on office buildings throughout the downtown area, this year's decorations will be concentrated on or near Main Street Square, the $7.9 million centerpiece of a downtown remake that features fountains, public art and a brick-paved Main Street. The three-block-long square and a four-block stretch of Lamar will be illuminated by multicolored lighting displays featuring about 175,000 bulbs. Giant wrapped gift boxes
  4. Surely there has been retained a photograph of this unusual, at the time, architectural design. I worked there from 1979-1980 and have been trying to describe it to a friend, who doubts its existence. The "remodeling" in 1996 hath rendered what amounts to a new and drastically different design and she cannot visualize my descripton. It also was renamed several times, but I believe the latest is Houston Industries Building. I have Googled and Ask.com'ed ad nauseum and still no likeness of it. Here is a description from HH (Historic Houston): 1100 Milam Building 1100 Milam Street Architect: Joint Venture Ill: Koetter, Tharp, Cowell
  5. New school for arts sought By NANCY SARNOFF Copyright 2009 Houston Chronicle Oct. 17, 2009, 1:26AM A downtown business group wants to see Houston's High School for the Performing and Visual Arts build a new home in the Theater District. Where exactly the school would go and how a new building would be financed hasn't been determined, but there are some prominent individuals supporting the move. HISD spokesman Norm Uhl said there have been discussions, but they've all been preliminary. Bob Eury, president of Central Houston, said the group has a list of possible downtown sites and that the architecture firm Gensler was hired to work on the plan because the company was involved in an earlier proposal to relocate the property. And the link..
  6. While riding the light rail for the first time yesterday, I had to use the bathroom. So I decided to check out the Hotel Icon's bathroom. Man was it nice. It even had special paper towels with their logo printed on them to wipe your hands. The restuarant downstairs .... quite impressive, Bank by Jean Georges. Go check it out. Hotel Icon
  7. Looking out my window, I notice City Hall no longer has hands to the clock on Smith St. Very bush league to say the least. Are they being repaired? I notice they are cleaing the building, so maybe they took them off the protect them?
  8. Downtown residential highrise's being planned by Marquette Cos. Totaling more the 350 units. But they don't stop there... http://www.bisnow.com/commercial-real-estate/houston/what-do-downtown-and-galveston-have-in-common/ Managing director Darren Sloniger tells us Downtown feels like Chicago (where he's based) did 20 years ago. (We just wish the city had a winning basketball team like Chicago did 20 years ago.) The City's new retail strategy, focus on parks, and residential incentive all point to a submarket about to take off. He's doing due diligence on a few sites, and tells us he'd like to develop a couple high-rise projects totaling about350 units Downtown. 11. Can anyone enlighten me as to the status of the Magnolia? I have heard that it is for sale, which would not be altogether surprising to me, given the state of affairs. Info most appreciated. Juniper
  12. Construction set for redevelopment of landmark hospital A ceremonial construction kick-off event is scheduled for Sept. 23, marking the transformation of the old Jefferson Davis Hospital into loft-styled homes for artists. City and civic officials are scheduled to appear at 10 a.m. at 1101 Elder St. in honor of the Jefferson Davis Artist Lofts. Slated to speak are Houston Mayor Bill White; Harris County Commissioner Sylvia Garcia; and H. Joe Nelson III, president of the Houston Endowment Inc. The Houston Endowment is the single largest contributor to the development project, which is being called a first-of-its-kind in Houston. The 34 residential units -- to be finished in mid 2005 -- will include studio work space for resident artists and a place for them to live. The former hospital, which originally opened in 1924 in the Fifth Ward, stood vacant for nearly three decades before the re-development. The Jefferson Davis Artist Lofts are being developed by Artspace Projects of Minneapolis, a non-profit real estate developer for the arts. Avenue Community Development Corp., a local non-profit developer of affordable housing, is also involved in the project. Numerous funding sources were required to make the project happen. Financing was provided by Apollo Housing Capital, the City of Houston, Harris County, the Local Initiatives Support Corporation, Southwest Bank of Texas, Texas Department of Housing and Community Development, the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Major funding for the project also was provided by the Brown Foundation, Cameron Foundation, FannieMae Foundation, Fayez Sarofim & Co., Fondren Foundation, Houston Endowment Inc., McGovern Fund, Rockwell Fund, St. Paul Travelers Foundation, Strake Foundation, Surdna Foundation, Susan Vaughan Foundation, Washington Mutual Foundation and Wortham Foundation.
  13. Thanks to DrLan34 for discovering this. http://www.surgehomes.com/
  14. Fencing is up around the block bound by Chenevert, St. Joseph, Hamilton, and Pierce. Small amount of dirt removed and protective fencing around live oak trees. Any idea of what's going on there?
  15. This was approved by voters on Nov. 5th http://www.pgal.com/media/cache/d4/d416c687aa79c8a538624aa0cf6748a4.jpg http://www.pgal.com/portfolio/harris-countycity-of-houston-joint-processing-cent/
  16. Anyone know the story on the proposed Harris County Jail that was defeated in the bond election last November? Apparently it would have covered much of the north bank of the bayou downtown... so much so that the Buffalo Bayou Partnership's planned trail would have had to veer away from the bayou and circle around the building. So is it dead for good, or only postponed? And why are we lining Buffalo Bayou with jails anyway? Don't most counties put jails in out-of-the-way locations? As in, not the city's main waterfront?
  17. Work has started on one of my favorite downtown buildings. It will be called the Palace Hotel, located at (I think) Congress and LeBranch. Beautiful building, but surrounded by a huge parking garage.
  18. I assumed there already was a topic on this magnificent Romanesque style church? This link gives good detail of it's beginning's to present. http://www.abcsoffaith.com/artchurch/annuncc.htm Been attending since childhood and although it has had fairly recent restorations it is in need once again. Can't help but notice the signs of rain coming through and paint peeling. You must take a tour one day to really appreciate it's grandeur. The narrow stairs leading to the pipe organ are a something else. You must study the intricate detail of the stain glass windows throughout and the gothic furnishings within. I could wonder in this place for hours examining every detail in the interiors. Nicholas J Clayton - famed prominent Victorian Architect would be proud to see that it still stands today. http://www.travelphotobase.com/s/TXXNC.HTM Simply Magnifico!
  19. Probably hotel guests instead? If the Downtown At A Glance survey included inmates, Downtown's population would almost double. In downtown there are usually between 8K-9K inmates in the jails in a given day. https://www.tcjs.state.tx.us/docs/AbbreRptCurrent.pdf But inmates are really more like hotel guests. Temporary occupants for a night or two. True prisoners that actually reside in downtown and counted in the Federal Census? Perhaps the Joe Kegans State Jail in downtown holds actual prisoners? But I'm not sure.
  20. It's coming soon apparently. Little building south of TC.

  24. Does anyone have any memories of the restaurant that used to be here or any other tenants in the past? It is a wonderful building. I am curious as to why it is still vacant..
  25. Here's the historical time line for this industrial warehouse building. In 1910 it was built for the WM. D. Cleveland & Co. Then the building was bought and became the International Coffee Building, then it was sold and bought and renamed the Sunset Coffee Building. Then came the club called Love Street Light Circus Feel Good Machine. From Rick Campbell's 40 Years After Blog: On Jan. 30, 1969, the Beatles performed publicly for the last time. The 42-minute performance on the rooftop of the Apple Building in London was captured on film for the movie Let It Be. About half of that performance ended up in the film. If you happen to be up around the north end of downtown Houston this Friday and hear Beatles songs wafting around in the air, you won't have found a portal back to 1969 nor will your imagination be playing tricks on you. Forty years after that legendary concert in London, the musicians of Love Street Light Circus will take to the roof of the old International Coffee Company building at Allen's Landing
