  1. Does anyone remember (or have pictures) of the old Medical Arts Building downtown (circa 1929), just north of Houston Center? As I recall, it was an early Art Deco skyscraper. When I saw it in the early 80s it was filthy and neglected, but the design and detail were memorable. It can be seen in the upper part of the photo, while under demolition: http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f284/liftedholmz/old-william-penn-hotel.jpg Anyone have a better picture or any info? It was quite an attractive building.
  2. I was browsing the publication The Texas Jewish Herald dated September 18, 1930 and came across this business advertisement. Never heard of this hotel so I thought I would share! Fox Hotel 1006 Dallas Between Main and Fannin "A friendly hotel with every convenience" Fire proof - steam heated Newly furnished throughout Rates moderate A.C. Lourvien, Manager Houston, Texas Fairfax 7358
  3. Amazing find in the The Houston Post dated September 1, 1909. Jesse H. Jones Lumber Co. - Phones 24. - Main and Mckinney. W.V. Angle, Manager.
  4. http://www.houstonchronicle.com/business/real-estate/article/Houston-s-apartment-boom-focuses-on-urban-scene-4619878.php?t=445cfc44ffb05374ef Hines is planning to build a high rise across the street from Market Square Park at Preston and Travis
  5. I don't think this hotel was ever built? I know there was the Sterling Building located at 608 Fannin Street. Famous architects! Wyatt C. Hedrick was so cool! From the publication Greater Houston Texas and the Southwest, dated September 1929. The Sterling Hotel Mr. R.S. Sterling, Owner. Hedrick & Gottlieb, Architects, Houston, Texas.
  6. Does anyone know what year the Lyric Center was built? Also, does anyone know the name of the white building about 30 floors, located somewhere between the Lyric center and the JPMorgan Chase tower? When viewed from the west, it has rectangular windows in the center of the building that are longer vertically than horizontally. The windows on the north and south edges are more square shaped. It is relatively new and I don't see any info on it in the list of downtown buildings? Been away from Houston for a while so any help would be appriciated.
  7. Can't seem to find where the popular internet image of the George Dickey business advertisement originated from. There wasn't a dedicated thread for George Dickey so I thought I would create one. This architect was amazing! I really liked his 1890s syle. The TSHA has a good write up about him: https://www.tshaonline.org/handbook/entries/dickey-george-e George E. Dickey, Architect and Superintendent. Office- Over Savings Bank, Cor. Main and Congress, Houston. Twenty years experience in architecture (Capitol Hotel..) Large Building Construction a Specialty, References,
  8. woah! I actually found an address to this incredible building! Now I wonder who the architect was? That's the next thing HAIF should figure out. I will ask, what exactly is this? A club of sorts? I never researched Knights. Photograph postcard dated 1898. Knights of Pythias Castle, Houston, Texas. Article in the newspaper The Houston Post January 1, 1919. Secret Societies Texas Lodge No. 1 Knights of Pythias. Castle Hall, 812 ½ Fannin Street. Meets tonight. Work in page rank. Installation of officers. Visiting Knights welcome. Jno M. Gribbin. C. C.; R. R. Redfield. K. of R.
  9. What is this building in downtown? Between the Aquarium and the Tennyson Hotel, at Bagby, Franklin and Preston streets. It is an ugly, apparently unused concrete bunker-like structure. It is not labeled in the HCAD or City of Houston databases. Damn I tried to insert a bing birds-eye picture but it won't take it.
  10. Very cool! Who would have thought the infamous architect Alfred C. Finn would design a service station? This is supposed to been have built in 1918. Drawing: Photograph:
  11. Three Allen Center: Office Tower At 333 Clay St.
  12. Believe I just found the original City Auditorium! The 1895 auditorium was built on Main Street at McGovern Street. The 1920 city auditorium was built at, or near 615 Louisiana St. Very cool history here!! I never even knew this existed!
  13. Very, very cool piece of history here! This was the original Foley store, and then they moved to 214-218 Travis Street. The building was built in the early 1900s, I believe 1909! Not to be confused with the Foley's Department Stores. This business was made by brothers Pat and James Foley, who ran a dry goods business referred to as W.L. Foley Dry Goods Co.
  14. Another one of Joseph Finger's hidden gems. This is the 1920s downtown office building for Big City News with an address of 1400 Milam Street. Awesome building, awesome architect! Love the details on this one.
  15. Very rare find here! Was this ever built? I thought the company was located in the Houston Cotton Exchange and Board of Trade building located at 202 Travis Street? A rare Alfred C. Finn drawing! Very cool history here. Anderson Clayton & Company Office Building Robert J. Cummins Cons. Eng. Alfred C. Finn Architect Houston, Texas
  16. On the Houston History site, there's a great slideshow of old mansions and homes. http://www.houstonhistory.com/poduct2/album3/jsalbum.html Most of them were downtown or in Midtown. There were literally dozens of High Victorian mansions, some designed by George Dickey and one by Nicholas Clayton. What I found totally surprising was how short a time they lasted. Many were built after 1870 and torn down just after the turn of the century. The 1920's saw most of these grand homes, none as much as fifty years old and many closer to thirty years old, demolished, seemingly without a second thought. A bare handful survived until the 1950's but no later. I suspect the development of Broadacres, Shadyside, Shadowlawn, and later River Oaks and Riverside Terrace contributed to this, but it's enough to sicken any ardent preservationist. Anyone else heard of this? marmer
  17. Found a very cool Joseph Finger building from the 1950s! Phoenix Furniture Store on the corner of Texas Ave. & Travis St. From the newspaper Labor Messenger dated November 26, 1943. Compliments Phoenix Furniture Store New Location - Texas at Travis
  18. I was looking at the publication Texas State Journal of Medicine dated July 1925 and came across a hospital that I've never heard of. It's the Houston Eye, Ear, And Throat Hospital located at 1300 Walker Avenue. Houston Eye, Ear, And Throat Hospital 1300 Walker Avenue, Corner of Caroline Street Open April 1, 1924 A modern, fire-proof Hospital, for the care of eye, ear, nose and throat cases. Staff: Eye: Dr. W.W. Ralston Dr. E.L. Goar Ear, Nose, and Throat: Dr. John H. Foster Dr. Lyle J. Logue Dr. Claude C. Cody Superintendent: Melanie Perry, R.N.
  19. Discovered a new, historic, hotel today! How many Buffalo-named motels/hotels did Houston have? There were also; Buffalo Inn Motor Hotel At 9051 South Main St. Buffalo Motel At 3011 Allen Pkwy. From the newspaper Labor Messenger dated November 27, 1942: Buy Bonds With What You Save A Clean House at Low Rates Hotel Buffalo 523 Preston B.3-1015 Excuse me if 523 Preston is a phone number. I assumed B. 3-1015 was the phone number.
  20. The original Baker house on 1416 Main Street. Built in April 1919. A little confused. Wasn't Capt. Baker's home (or family estate) on San Jacinto? There was also the Baker estate which MD Anderson moved into to start their hospital system. I wonder if these are different people? If not, Capt. James Baker was very, very wealthy! Cool house! Anyone know the architect? George Dickey?
  21. woah! This building from the 1870s is just stunning! The carvings/detail of the facade! I'm not exactly sure of the "41 Main" address. This was probably renamed somewhere in the early 1900s to something like "401 Main". Looks like the T.W. House Bank was founded in 1838, and a significant date is 1889. From the newspaper Houston Daily Mercury dated January 20, 1874: T.W. House, Banker, No. 41 Main Street, Houston, - - Texas, Dealer in Foreign & Domestic Exchange. Exchange On London, Hamburg, Liverpool, New York, New Orleans, And other Cities, for sale n sums to suit. Deposits received, and a General Banking Business done in all its branches. Special attention will be given to Collections n this and all accessible points. T.W. House Bank Building photos.
  22. Never seen this on HAIF. Very cool! It looks like the Stewart Building was the building that housed the Hermann Hospital estate in the 1920’s. The estate was responsible for the business and funding aspect of running the hospital. According to a notation on the back, the estate was on the top floor and the building was later sold to Gordon Jewelry, at which point the estate moved to the Hermann Professional Building. Amazing building! The attention to detail, the "S" carvings! Ground Floor Stewart Building Stewart Abstract & Title Co. John B. Stewart - Pres. A.A. Brush. Secy. & Manager. Capital $75,000.000 Phone Preston 4224 Building name: Stewart The "S" and other ornaments. Amazing!!
  23. Discovered Eugene Heiner's office location in the publication Ladies' Messenger, Volume 2, number 1 dated January 1888. Cool history here!! Eugene T. Heiner Architect 110 and 112 Main Street, (Opposite Masonic Temple,) Houston, . . . Texas
  24. I need to verify the location of this building. I thought I read it was on Prairie Street, but I could be totally wrong. I'll look into this a little more later. Edit: Turner's Hall- Corner of Prairie Street and Caroline Street. This event venue is slightly confusing. The official postcard alludes to the actual name of the complex? Maybe I'm just misreading things? Progressive Houston, Volume II (1910 - 1911) mentions this: Exterior and Garden View of Turner Hall, Bowling Alleys and Band Stand, Covering One block of Ground. Houston Turner Hall- Interior View of Dance Hall, Sixty by One Hundred Feet - Maple Floor. Houston Turner Hall- Ladies' Reception Hall. Houston Turner Hall- Ladies' and Gentleman's Lunch Room. Houston Turner Hall- Bowling Alleys- Six in Number- Standard in All Features- Largest in Texas
