  1. On a just-barely-related note: Many people know that Service Corporation International, the world's largest funeral home company, is headquartered in Houston. What most people don't know is that there is a cafeteria in the basement of their building. Even fewer people know its nickname is "The Coffin Cafe."
  2. So, I was talking to some coworkers today, and we got off on the topic of the flag on top of our building. One of the guys that had been there for many many years informed us that the US flag on the top of the building was once MUCH MUCH larger than it is today....he said that, in fact it used to drape over the building and cover up the windows of the 43rd and 42nd floors when the wind wasn't blowing. As to why we have a smaller flag now...well apparently when the wind was blowing at a good clip and 'ol glory was pulled out taut, it created so much force that it damaged the top 3 stories of the building that the pole mounts down through. The American General CEO flew the huge flag that he wanted, even though the engineers had told him it was a no no. Personally, I think the flag should be double or triple its current size....the mass of the building makes it look kinda puny.
  3. Does anyone know if/where Micro Center would be relocating if this is true? From Swamplot: http://swamplot.com/did-micro-center-just-sell-its-houston-location-to-amegy-bank/2014-02-25/ The self-proclaimed “industry insider” behind a new office-space rumor website tells Swamplot that it’s “well-known . . . amongst the tenant/landlord representative crowd” that Amegy Bank has purchased the 4.13-acre site at 1717 West Loop South just north of San Felipe that’s currently home to Houston’s only Micro Center store. The owner and would-be seller of the property, according to county tax records, is the Ohio-based parent company of the 47,800-sq.-ft. computer and electronics store, which has been operating in that location since 1994. There is only one other Micro Center location in Texas. *** “The property, which is just down the street from [Amegy Bank's] current office at Five Post Oak Park,” reports the rumor site, “is the supposed site for Amegy to build their own 10-12 story office tower. Rumblings suggest that this move is the result of a lease renewal disagreement between Amegy and their current landlord Shorenstein.” If the rumor is true, would the computer retailer be looking for another Houston location, or just close up shop here? Swamplot has contacted both Micro Center and Amegy Bank for comment. We’ll add an update if we hear anything back. http://swamplot.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/micro-center.jpg Webcam: http://www.workzonecam.com/projects/amegybank/amegybank/workzonecam Renderings: http://www.justintowart.com/wp-content/uploads/Towart-Work13-Arch-Illustration-6.jpghttp://www.justintowart.com/wp-content/uploads/Towart-Work13-Arch-Illustration-7.jpg http://swamplot.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/amegy-tower-rendering.jpg
  4. Stopped by the site today. Awesome looking property. Had a conversation with the neighbor. It's actually two homes and some land by the bayou. The neighbor said apartments would be terrible due to the small road around that bend. The 4 acres down the street, formerly The Monaco, is owned by a Canadian guy.
  5. Last I checked, the Skanska project has 5 tunnel connections. Also I think we should all remember that Linebeck, Skanska, and Hines are all chasing the same group of potential tenants. I think we will see one of the three go in the next year maybe two if we are lucky. Now the good news is that there is a 50ish story tower that will beat all 3 of these out of the ground.
  6. From the HBJ, I don't have access to the whole article: "The Four Oaks Place office complex may soon be more appropriately named Five Oaks Place. The owner of the 1.8 million-square-foot office complex in the Galleria area is looking at spending between $100 million and $120 million to develop a new office building at 1550 Post Oak Blvd., where a 24 Hour Fitness is currently located" Webcam: http://oxblue.com/open/transwestern/5oaks Renderings, and article from 10/13: http://www.bizjournals.com/houston/blog/breaking-ground/2013/10/photos-developers-break-ground-on-bhp.html http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8518/8507440817_0fefe9fa75_b.jpg http://www.justintowart.com/wp-content/uploads/Towart-Work13-Arch-Illustration-40.jpg http://www.justintowart.com/wp-content/uploads/Towart-Work13-Arch-Illustration-42.jpg http://www.justintowart.com/wp-content/uploads/Towart-Work13-Arch-Illustration-43.jpg

  8. More good news for DT... I remember reading a few post from last year that mentioned, the new park would be a waste of money.
  9. I'm sure many of you are probably aware, but I did not know this. I knew it was up there, but not second.

  11. Here's the best info from the article: The project has broken ground: http://www.houstonchronicle.com/business/columnists/sarnoff/article/High-end-office-building-underway-west-of-downtown-5920360.php#/3 http://ww1.hdnux.com/photos/33/35/11/7197296/5/1366x1366.jpg http://ww3.hdnux.com/photos/33/35/11/7197298/5/1366x1366.jpg http://ww2.hdnux.com/photos/33/35/11/7197297/5/1366x1366.jpg http://ww4.hdnux.com/photos/33/35/11/7197299/5/1366x1366.jpg
  12. Looks like the Exxon-Mobile campus has sparked more development; this time a 10-story building for Southwestern Energy. Per the article, the building is to be located at the corner of I-45 and the Hardy (which is probably just a generic location for SWV itself). http://www.bizjourna...ds-village.html
  13. Stage Stores is the corporate name, and the headquarters are here in Houston at 2425 West Loop South.
  14. http://tanglewoodproperty.com/5599-san-felipe/ http://i.imgur.com/zo6SvC0.jpg The proposed fitness center has been on the books for a year or two. 15. HBJ reports today that ExxonMobil plans to build a new very large campus in Spring (west of I-45 at the point where the Hardy Toll Road intersects with I-45). The plan is to consolidate pretty much everything except for the downtown operations. Also reports a rumor that at least parts of the Refining & Marketing HQ operations may move from Virginia.

  17. So, I was walking down W Main St., after a workout, and right next to the new midrise/ townhouse development, which is going up in the area, there was demolition of two houses and possibly the other two that lead up to Weslayan St. I'm sure swamplot had them in a demolition report at some point, but was immediately curious what might take their place. If all 4 of those houses go then certainly some sort of mini midrise or large townhomes will replace these. Any idea what's up? Sorry I don't have any pictures.

  21. Surely there has been retained a photograph of this unusual, at the time, architectural design. I worked there from 1979-1980 and have been trying to describe it to a friend, who doubts its existence. The "remodeling" in 1996 hath rendered what amounts to a new and drastically different design and she cannot visualize my descripton. It also was renamed several times, but I believe the latest is Houston Industries Building. I have Googled and Ask.com'ed ad nauseum and still no likeness of it. Here is a description from HH (Historic Houston): 1100 Milam Building 1100 Milam Street Architect: Joint Venture Ill: Koetter, Tharp, Cowell

  23. This is a few years away as of now. They also didn't mention where these would be built. In the same spot or a different location? http://www.houstonchronicle.com/news/houston-texas/houston/article/City-plans-hugely-important-new-justice-complex-5094942.php?cmpid=albtfp
  24. From the Bisnow article: http://www.bisnow.com/commercial-real-estate/houston/2260-why-you-should-get-into-seniors-housing/
  25. The thought crossed my mind when I read the chron.com article this morning about Chevron buying the second former Enron building and the YMCA land... Have there been any rumors that Chevron is moving more people here or consolidating somehow? Any chance they would move their HQ from California here?
