  2. Didn't the Railhead eventually turn into the Boston Teaparty? Seafood Buffet?
  3. There was a Plantation on South Main, known to regulars there as "The Plant". It was was on the east side of Main, between OST and Playland Park. Playland was just north of where Murworth is now. You're right. It was very popular with young, night-clubbers in the 40's. Thanks also, Subdude, from me for all the great, old pictures!
  4. I was looking on Worthpoint for historical Houston items and came across this cool club. The club was called Roulette Club located 3701 Kirby Drive. Very cool, because I've never seen the original facade! Anyone know the date to this? I'd say 1970s?
  5. I remember reading about this old Houston club a decade ago. I searched and found a singled blurb so I thought I would provide a fresh start. Very cool!! Love these old clubs. 6. Harry James also played at the Paladium Club on South Main @ OST in about 1954. It was owned by local musician, Johnny Martinez. Everybody played there, even Elvis what's-his-name. It could seat 2,000 people.

  9. On HAIF, there was a single blurb about this building from 15 years ago. Thought I would bring this topic to a fresh start and a dedicated thread. The armory and club was on top of Commercial National Bank building that is located on Franklin Street & Main Street. Here's a post card I found: Very cool! The original building is still standing. The building has been modified.
  10. I was reading the newspaper The Bellaire & Southwestern Texan dated September 6, 1972 and came across an advertisement for Derrick Club located at 7501 South Main Street. Does anyone recall this place? 1972 wasn't that long ago, maybe someone on HAIF went here and has some memories to share? 14. I tried to search past topics and thought for sure these were covered so unless I am mistaken so can someone please fill in the blanks? 1. Were the Coliseum & Music Hall built as one or rather in unison to compliment each other? 2. Built what year/years? and demolished? 3. Is there any documentation that could indicate which performers played there? I know for sure I went to Ringling Bros/Barnum circus at the Coliseum around 1966 as a child. It seemed like Disneyland, only inside. First Rock Concert 1976 saw Boston w/Styx and too many after that to name. Glad I saved my ticket stubs. My mom told me she saw Frank Sinatra twice when the Music Hall was quite new. Frank's bobby-soxer era so it must have been way back.

  19. I was browsing the newspaper The Rice Thresher dated October 10, 1980 and came across an unusual advertisement for a club on South Main. This is the Rinestone Rangler Club located at 9150 South Main Street. A little confused. Did the former club The Ranch Houston Club close down and R&R went in? That's right, thought I recall hearing The Ranch burned down and then moved a few blocks over on Buffalo Speedway. I guess R&R was built after The Ranch left. 21. I was reading the newspaper The Jewish Herald-Voice dated June 5, 1958 and came across an article that mentioned Castaway Club located at 6219 Grand Blvd. Does anyone recall this place by any chance? Mizrachi Women To Install Officers At Luncheon June 11th The Houston Chapter o Mizrachi Women will hold its installation of the Officers luncheon Wednesday, June 11, at 12 noon at the Castaway Club, 6219 Grand Blvd. Final plans for the affair were made at a meeting June 2, at the home of Mrs. Ed Feldman, with Mrs. Abe Schuman, president, presiding.

  23. My father-in-law was a native Houstonian, and he used to talk about an old illegal casino/brothel(?) out Hwy 90. He said it existed after WWII and up into the 1950's. There was an old brick gatehouse just west of the current Beltway on the south side of 90 that he said belonged to the casino...does anyone know about this, or was my late father-in-law yankin' my chain? Jake Friedman Domain Privee Casino At 11620 South Main St. Edit: This is actually located on Old Main Street Loop Road near South Main Street (Highway 90.)
  24. I was looking at the 1950 Sanborn map and discovered a nite club located at 8301 South Main Street. Anyone know what this is about? If you look right on the same parcel, you will see the canals of Lake Island located at 8301-1/2 South Main. HAIF has always been confused on the whereabouts of Lake Island. Old advertisements of the amusement lake indicated "Behind Price's Restaurant." This seems like the location of the night club. Perhaps Price's Hamburgers was also one of those restaurant clubs? Although, a dining room club is vastly different from a night club. Perhaps the night club went out of business and Price's Hamburgers (or Price's Restaurant) moved in? Or vice versa.
