  1. I've seen this club operator posting a lot on IG. It's in the Greater Heights probably on W. 19th St. I'm guessing they have renovated and existing building.
  2. Barry's Pizza closes after nearly 40 years https://www.bizjournals.com/houston/news/2020/05/27/barrys-pizza-restaurant-closes.html Barry’s Pizza has closed. The 37-year-old Italian restaurant at 6003 Richmond Ave. announced the closure on its Facebook page May 26. The restaurant directly cited the coronavirus pandemic as the reason for the closure. The restaurant closed March 28, with a sign saying “Hibernating,” and never reopened. Barry’s William P. Hobby Airport location is listed as temporarily closed on the airport’s website.
  3. There's an album from 1964 entitled "Lightnin' Hopkins Live at the Bird Lounge, Houston, Texas." This must have been a short lived club. I've never heard any oldtimers ever mention "The Bird Lounge." The Jester was better known and around for a few years, say 1961-1965. As far as I know, nothing's ever been written about this place. Lou's Ricksha Lounge was supposedly connected to the Bird, or maybe a later incarnation. All three places were supposed to have been on Shepherd Drive, around Westheimer up to West Gray. Somebody, please fill in some details. Anything...

  5. I just found this forum. My manager Mike McCambridge used to own The Stampede Ballroom and it was on Richmond Ave. I sang there regularly with Bud and Bud the Hooper Twins, Neal Hart, Jackie Ward, Arch Yancy and others. This was in the late 60's and early 70's. I sang there 3 nights a week. It was a great place to dance and listen to some of the best Western Swing Music!

  14. I was reading more of that local Southwestern Times Houston magazine. The issue was dated Thursday, April 25, 1946 and I saw a business listing for "Old Main" Dancing located One Block South of Bellaire Blvd. on Old Main St. Road. Does anyone know anything about this place? Very cool find! Never heard of it before.
  15. I was searching EBay for TMC stuff and I noticed some old matchbooks from The Doctor's Club. I researched this club through case law text. The club was involved in a lawsuit due to not paying taxes, or something about club fees. A shorty brief from the TMC library: The Doctors' Club began in 1954 as a social club for doctors and dentists and their families at The Texas Medical Center in Houston, Texas. The Doctor's Club also hosted medical lectures and various medical groups. The Doctor's Club closed in 2005. https://archives.library.tmc.edu/the-doctors-club Open Corporates indicates the registered address at the time of formation was 1133 MD Anderson Blvd. The law case text indicates the club was housed in the Texas Medical Center Library. I thought the address (as of 2022) was 1133 John Freeman Blvd. https://opencorporates.com/companies/us_tx/0012005201 A short brief from leagle: Plaintiff leases space on the third floor of the Jesse H. Plaintiff's hours are from 11 A. M. to 11 P. M. with two exceptions. It is open until midnight on Saturdays and is closed on Tuesdays. A member's family and guests are permitted to use plaintiff's facilities. https://www.leagle.com/decision/1960335183fsupp1521308 Now onto the cool matches!
  16. I think it was the End o' Main Ballroom. Eating Bill Williams' fried chicken with your hands was "Fried Chicken - Savage Style". I never knew that you could eat it any other way.
  17. Then she called Bob Garner. He was working at the Palladium Ballroom, at 3145 Southmore Blvd. tonight. It was Don Robey’s club, and the leading R&B and Soul Club in Houston. She told Bob about my arrival, and she also promised me free discs.
  18. Does anyone have any information or at least the name of the 1950s venue? Its demolition due to construction of 288 led to the late 1970s? article in the Post or Chronicle It must have been a major stop for bands on the rise. In the 1960s it continued as a major touring venue known as the Cinder Club perhaps concurrent with the Motown era.It was so long ago I may not have all details correct. Is this connected to the rumor-fact of Bill Haley living in the Menil Collection area in the early 1950s?

  21. I found an image of Holcombe & Main in the early 1960s and noticed a restaurant on the corner of Holcolmbe that caught my eye. From what I can see, it's called Show Biz Restaurant. I've never even heard of this place! How can it be so elusive to the public? Anyone have any memories of this place? From the magazine Billboard dated April 6, 1963: Houston Singer Gogi Grant is schedule to make a two-week stand at the Cork Club opening on April 20. Also to appear on the same bill will be comic Tommy Noonan. They will follow Robert Goulet into the Cork Club. 25. Those names sound very familiar to me, think some of them played at a hall on Bissonnet, Bellaire area, in the early to mid '80's. I recall "Beer Bust" night & a live band, when "happy hour" was in full swing. Some years later, I preferred "The Rose", nice club. I don't recall that hospital. From the aerials, looks like it was designed in the sixties, has atriums. Wish there was a picture of it, somewhere.
