  1. Researched the Dallas architect Charles D. Hill earlier in the week. Mr. Hill designed a few Houston buildings in the 1920s. Charles Hill designed the downtown Houston church called First Baptist Church of Houston which was located at 1010 Lamar Street. Incredibly, there are still photos of the now demolished building. It looks much older than 1920s. I'd say it looks like it was built in the 1890s.
  2. Does anyone know about this? I believe I found a small church on the corner of Post Oak at Westheimer! I went onto their website and their "about us" page mentions: Founded in 1939, The Church of St. John the Divine is a vibrant congregation dedicated to Changing Lives for God in Christ. Was this the original location before they moved to 2450 River Oaks Blvd? Cool find!! From the newspaper Southwestern Times dated July 5, 1951 : Wright Graduates from Baylor Med With High Honors Graduating from Baylor Medical College with high honors, Bob Wright of 4321 Cynthia will intern at the Jeff Davis Hospital, after which he plans to go to Japan as a medical missionary. Dr. Wright, who has lived in Bellaire for the past three years, has a wife and two children. He was lay pastor at the Baptist mission on Westheimer and Post Oak Road until his studies and hospital duty during his senior year forced him to resign. The Alvin Sun dated April 29, 1954: Grace Church to Attend Presentation On Sunday afternoon (May 2) members of Grace Episcopal Church School will attend the Annual Mite-box Presentation Service which this year will be held in Saint John the Divine Episcopal Church, Westheimer and Post Oak Road, Houston. The service will begin at 4:00 p.m. Members of Grace School are asked to be at the Parish House, ready to leave at 2:45 p.m. Parents of the children will provide transportation. Aerial photograph of the building located at Post Oak and Westheimer in 1957:
  3. I've never even heard of this temple. I searched HAIF and couldn't find anything so I thought I would share. The building looks like it was designed/built between the 1900s through the 1920s. Maybe 1915-ish? Who was the architect, does anyone know? I just discovered this building so I haven't had time to research for an address. It might be located on an Sanborn map, or in the libraries. Cool building though, and awesome history!! Evangelistic Temple - West Capitol and Houston Avenues - Houston, Texas
  4. Never seen this mentioned on HAIF so I thought I would contribute. After Googling, it appears the name of the church has since changed. The church is now called River Side United Methodist Church. Looks like the original buildings still stand! Awesome!! Does anyone know the architect? Riverside Methodist Church, located in one of the beautiful residential sections of Houston at the North MacGregor Way and Cullen Boulevard, is just off the campus of the University of Houston. Organized in 1939, it is now one of the leading and fast growing churches of Houston, and is making a splendid contribution to the spiritual life in the city. Its present membership is over 1200. Dear Friend: We are happy that you came to worship in our church recently. You are cordially invited to come again. Sincerely yours, A. Grady Hallowguist Minister
  5. This church in South Hampton hasn't been mentioned in 15 years. Thought I would post a postcard with the cool building. The First Christian Church Houston, Texas This award winning church a 16-1 Sunset Blvd. is an outstanding architectural example, in this city of beautiful churches
  6. Anyone familiar with this church? It's way, way down Buffalo Speedway! Isn't Lily of the Valley a deadly flower? Or, there is a flower that has a similar sounding name that is poisonous. Website: https://lovcogicinternational.com/
  7. Bering Drive Church of Christ is for sale. Talk about high profile property! The asking price of $26 million seems very high to me. This one might sit for a while. 1910 Bering Drive - 4 Acres of Residential Land Offered at $26,136,000 USD. https://www.loopnet.com/Listing/1910-Bering-Dr-Houston-TX/27637533/
  8. I never paid attention to the name of this place a long Bellaire in Southside Place. Does HAIF know of an architect for their campus consisting of a church and school? I wonder how many acres the site sits on? I'd imagine that's a high dollar parcel! Did anyone attend the St. Mark's Episcopal School or Church?
  9. Anyone know the architect for this smaller, neighborhood church? I've driven past the church countless of times but never thought about seeing whole designed and built the church. Probably built in the 1970s or 1980s? Located in Westbury at 5020 West Bellfort St. Website: http://www.stjohnspresby.org/
  10. I was wondering if anyone knew the architect for the campus of the Corpus Christi Catholic School & Church. The church has an address of 9900 Stella Link Road. The school has an address of 4005 Cheena Drive. I often see this listed as "Corpus Christi School" on old 1950s/1960s maps. The buildings have been around for a while. As with movie theaters and other public spaces, the COVID-19 pandemic hit churches hard. I know of a few churches that have recently been sold. The Corpus Christi Catholic School & Church has a huge campus in the middle of a residential neighborhood. I wonder if they would ever sell their property? I could see a massive garden-style apartment complex on this site. Or maybe a mixture of multifamily, retail, and a park. Not expecting anything luxury. I don't foresee your typical 4 to 6 story multifamily wrap here. If they did sell some of their property I'd imagine they would get rid of the soccer field first. There is literally 4 soccer fields directly across the street. They could just lease, or have permission to use, one of the soccer fields at the South Campus Sports Association Field At 10001 Stella Link Rd. Campus overview:
  11. Rendering of the South End Christian Church designed in 1922 by Alfred Finn. The imposing neoclassical edifice stood at 4000 Main Street and was constructed at a time when the South End was populated by many of Houston’s more affluent citizens. The Pastor was Dr. A.E. Ewell
  12. There's a brand new CVS at 4930 West Bellfort Avenue!! Wasn't there a church here? What ever happened with the Salem Lutheran Church? Did the COVID-19 pandemic take them out? Was there a small theater group called The Company OnStage located here? I believe the original The Company OnStage was located in Westbury Square. This may have been there 2nd location? Where are they now? Any pictures of the demolishing of the former church?

  15. I don't think we have a thread for the St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church located at 5308 Buffalo Speedway. How long has the church been there? I'm sure they'd been there for 40+ years? Anyone ever attend service here? This is located at Buffalo Speedway & Bissonnet near the HEB.
  16. City of Houston Housing & Community Development has announced preliminary plans to renovate the existing site of Wesley AME Church for mixed use, including affordable apartments, retail, and live-work units for small business incubation. Sales document
  17. I remember going here for work meetings. Our business was so small, at that time, so the church agreed to let us rent out space for a general staff meeting. Website: https://www.westburyumc.org/
  18. I was searching HAIF for information about the property and couldn't find a thread. I wonder the total acreage? Website: https://www.wmbc.org/
  19. This could be interesting, depending on who buys the property, which fronts Heights Blvd between 17th and 18th. Story from The Leader https://www.theleadernews.com/community/historic-heights-church-selling-property-amidst-merger/article_c12306be-a51d-11ec-bdfb-33c79b6f4e20.html
