  1. I received this press release from Turner Partners Architecture --------------------------------- The ceremony was held on April 20,2008. LT to RT: Alex Bernard, Jack Duran, Greg Turner of Turner Partners Architecture, and Steve Dishman of Brookstone Corp. ---------- Turner Partners Architecture, LP Announces Start of Construction Phase for Notre Dame Catholic Church
  2. There's a small Catholic church in Llano--the only one, in fact-- that has a tie-in with the actress Sophia Loren. On a plaque on the building, there's mention that she donated money for the construction or renovation of the church. I forget if the plaque states how she got involved with that particular church in such a small town remote from her native Italy. It's possible a former pastor was from Italy and knew her.
  3. There is a church on W 17 between Durham and Beall. I don't ever see any parishoners on Sunday or any day at this church. The name is Timbergrove Baptist. The pastor last name is Fake. Is this a real church? I know it isn't abandonned but I would like to see this large property redeveloped into something else.
  4. What do you think of it? Pasadena's best church? (i think so) heres the website: http://www.stpiusv.com/ http://www.waysidedrive.com/pius/photos/outside4.jpg
  5. The first Catholic church in Houston was St. Vincent's. Where was it located? I have been told that it's bell is located at Annunciation Church. I do now the Cemetery close to Our Lady Of Guadalupe was the St. Vincent cemetery and that Dick Dowling is buried there in an unmarked grave.
  6. The roof collapsed this morning. Channel 13 is reporting that demo crews are prepping to take the rest of it down tonight.
  7. Okay, technically not Houston, but hey, considering how far out the city limits go, it's not far ... This is a chapel located on a retreat center near Kickapoo. We were there scoping out the site for a youth retreat and the gloomy weather and leaves made for (I thought) a cool picture. The sign by the chapel reads 'Oldham Memorial Chapel'. I don't know who Oldham is, nor anything about the history of this simple structure. Equipment used: Canon Rebel XTi + EF-S 18-55mm lens Settings: 1/40, F8.0, ISO400, handheld This is a copyrighted image. Please don't hotlink or use outside of this forum w/out permission. Any thoughts or knowledge of this church? Know of any other cool ones like it to photograph? -Michael
  8. I'm looking for an old church building that has great, classic design that is either condemned or abandoned within the city limits (preferably in the midtown area). I saw one once near all those Urban Lofts near PE but haven't been able to find it again. It looked like it was just the walls left. Does anyone have any photos or suggestions? Thanks.
  9. Wracking my brain but can't remember where Eastwood Baptist Church was. Was it on Dumble between Telephone and Polk? Help! I can't remember. Thanks in advance.
  10. I thought I remember someone saying that they wanted a mid century church to convert to living space. Obviously it's not exactly in town but it might be an option for someone not commuting into Houston daily. www.har.com/ 9259316
  11. The Parador is one of the last remaining examples of the Mediterranean Byzantine style so popular in the 1920's. Built in 1928. I often wondered what this place was like inside. Its great! You really go back in time to the days of ballroom music and dancing. If ever around Almeda and Binz check this place out. It can accomodate a big crowd. This place has class, in every sense of the word. http://www.paradorhouston.com/history.html http://www.brides.com/upload/images/p/a/paradorhouston@aol.com/00_main/parador_320_primary.jpg
  12. Does anyone know the building timeline for Trinity Baptist Church. They have land at the corner of Fry and Spring Green. Their sign stating "future home" has been out awhile and it seems like nothing has gotten underway yet? I was just curious when they are to break ground?
  13. Are there any paper recylcing bins around the Heights? They had them in quite a few places in spring branch but I can't seem to find any in the heights.
  14. On the way back from Hidalgo Park.. drove all over the place and ended up on Harrisburg. Not a particularly historic old church, but I liked it. Being a Methodist, I've never been to a Catholic Church and admire them. Church on Harrisburg near Forest Hill. ps.. I'm not the greatest photographer, on one of these..
  15. looking up the name but over 100 years old, it was due to get a historic places medallion soon... a friend called and said it was in montrose. rode my bike past st. thomas, the greek orthodox, bering-memorial and the episcopal church on w. alabama... just in time to get another call from her that find it was the church in freedman's town. here it is: Friendship Baptist Church 1313 Matthews St
  16. I attended there in the 1970's, and had heard that in the 1980's it was convereted either into a bar, a restaurant or condos. Anyone know for sure?
  17. Does anyone remember Park Memorial Baptist Church? Wayside Drive ran in front and Ave. K and Ave. J ran on the sides. I spent the summer of Watergate in their gym on the trampoline because there was nothing on tv except Watergate. I loved hearing the churchbells ring on Sunday morning. Hated to see it demolished, but I did manage to get a brick from the church.
  18. Does anyone know what happened with the 'further development' at the Heights Abbey (the old Woodland Baptist Church)? They were supposed to start a phase 2 and since it's by our house, we were curious what happened with that plan. The developer is/was Mercury Development. We were told a year ago that construction on phase 2 would be coming in the Fall but nothing at all happened and now emails to Mercury are returned as undeliverable. Just curious! Houstonray
  19. From HNC newsletter: Greater Little Zion Baptist Church is approaching its 125th anniversary. The church was founded in 1881 in a simple, wood framed building that still stands today. Little Zion Missionary Baptist Church, as it was first known, was constructed in the 3200 block of Trulley Street (originally Wilson Street) in Houston
  20. Hyde Park Hyde Park United Civic Association, an HNC member, invites you to the first annual Home Tour to be held in this historic community. Six houses and a church will welcome visitors from noon to 5 p.m., Saturday, April 2. The tour starts at Grace Lutheran Church, 2515 Waugh Drive. Free parking is available at the church. Purchase a brochure and map to the designated homes for $15, or reserve a ticket in advance for $12 at www.hydeparkunited.org. The tour route is well marked and can be walked easily. Located just west of downtown, Hyde Park was originally part of a farm belonging to Mirabeau B. Lamar, president of the Republic of Texas. Proceeds from the tour will support the restoration of Lamar Park.
  21. The congregation of Heights Church of Christ is embarking on an ambitious plan to restore its historic sanctuary at 1548 Heights Boulevard. The building, a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark, was constructed in 1925 from a design by Alfred C. Finn, architect of the San Jacinto Monument. Estimated cost of the restoration is $325,000. In recent years, church membership has dropped to between 20 and 30 active members. The congregation hopes by restoring its landmark building it can revive interest in the church and increase membership.
