My mother in law recently moved to the Heights area and I'm trying to help her find a new church home. She's a senior citizen and I'm looking for a church for her that has an active senior's group that goes on trips, goes out to eat together, etc. She's open to just about any religion except Catholic. We've tried a few already and the congregations seemed really small. We were looking for a mid-size congregation for her. Small enough for her to get involved but large enough that she can find a variety of friends. Thanks for any recommendations.

According to this report from ArtInfo, the frescoes which are currently housed in the Menil Collection's Byzantine Fresco Chapel will be returned to Cyprus next year: The frescoes were restored by Dominique de Menil, but were then found to have been stolen. She offered to return them to their rightful owner, the Greek Orthodox Church of Cyprus, but the Church allowed them to be on loan to the Menil Collection. According to the Menil's website, these pieces are "the only intact Byzantine frescoes of this size and importance in the Western Hemisphere." I have hope that the Menil's directors will create something equally awesome for this space in the future. http://www.artinfo.com/news/story/38701/the-menil-collection-to-return-byzantine-frescoes-to-greek-orthodox-church/

Updated and retracted. Ok, I definitely jumped the gun on this post. I have spoken with Howard Reed, Pastor of Central Presbyterian Church. He is informed me that my post concerning the sale of their property was erroneous. I apologize to the Church for failing to confirm my info prior to posting. I am sure there will be more details in the future. -Jeromy

http://www.click2houston.com/news/firefighters-respond-to-church-fire-in-the-heights/25175890 That is why the helicopter is hovering over the neighborhood. Hopefully everyone is safe and the fire can be contained. But the pictures do not look good.

Ever heard of Ecclessia? Taft at Drew street? Not really a church-- since they didn't apply for permits as a CHURCH (permits for coffee house and art gallery YES--church--no--permit requires x number of spaces per square foot of space --this building has no off street parking)-- 3 times each Sunday, dozens and dozens amd dozens of cars park in and around and block driveways/sidewalks-and leave no passageway for local traffic or heaven forbid for emergency vehicles (the sidestreets are narrow)- The local civic organization has meet with Ecclessia many times over many years and gotten nowhere-- COH same thing-- HPD solution was to start calling and reporting parking violators-- the local residents decided to try that-- this is what happened-- This is what was posted on youtube by whomever took video--A few seconds before this video began we had asked this constable to ticket two cars that were blocking a sidewalk, he was also blocking the sidewalk, but that this another issue. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1O88-3weR90 Why is HPD giving Ecclessia special consideration?

elnina999 has added a photo to the pool: On November 9, 1879, a group of 24 men met in the home of F. Schnaucke and founded a congregation they named Deutsche Evangelisch – Lutherische Dreieinigkeitskirche Gemeinde of Houston (German Evangelical – Lutheran Trinity Church of Houston). At the same time, the forefathers saw a need to nurture the spiritual, educational and social needs of their children, so a school was founded at the same time. There's a fence around this lot and this morning a backhoe was tearing up the asphalt. Is this the start of some new development, possibly for Christ Church?

There's an interesting church by that name in the Houston area. I found reference to it at the Cavallini Studios stained-glass restoration website. http://www.saintkevork.org/

What is being built near the intersection of Westpark & 59? There is some serious earth work being done. The site is at the northeast quadrant of the intersection, with a service station on the hard corner. The site has been vacant for years. Someone told me that it once housed a small amusement park that shut down after a murder in the 1970s. This was seen as the beginning of the surrounding area's decline. I don't have high expectations for this site, given the state of the surrounding area, but I am curious nonetheless.

I was wondering if anyone knew the story behind the church that is slowly being built near 59 North and Crosstimbers? They sure are moving slow in its construction!

Now I've just remembered something else from my years (1962-64) in Houston. I remember going to Sunday School at Park Place Methodist Church (I attended Kindergarten at Park Place Elementary School). If my memory serves me correctly, wasn't Park Place Methodist Church on Interstate 45 (Gulf Freeway)? If I'm right, is it still there? Chet Cuccia

Our Lady Of Guadalupe church has been around for a very long time. I am not certain of year built maybe 1920's but it has been a staple of that area for decades. The school is still in operation. The cemetary that is adjacent is reserved for clergy and sisters as best I know. This is cemetary is real old people. Take a peek inside and some date way back. The statues and saints are relics. Located at corner of Navigation and Jensen Drive. It amazes me that the church still marches on despite low attendance (everyone fled for burbs) but is making a comeback.

Drove past it today and noticed the church sign is removed and there are flagged stakes around it. Anyone know what's going on?
