  1. Prime Land Up For Grabs By Nancy Sarnoff - 2004 A pair of prime parcels of inner-city real estate is about to change hands for the first time in decades. Apartment developers are in negotiations with the William Dickey estate for six acres of coveted land on Kirby Drive. Gables Residential and the Hanover Co. are lined up to take control of two tracts on the west side of Kirby just south of Westheimer, according to real estate sources. The proposed projects will replace the River Oaks Tennis Club and an adjacent retail center that currently occupy the land. The Dickeys, an old-line Houston family that has owned most of the land along Kirby between Westheimer and West Alabama for more than a century, put the property on the block earlier this year. The family, which has maintained control of much of its land through long-term ground leases, is expected to sell the two acres to Hanover and lease the four acres to Gables. The Dickeys are also looking to lease about two acres on the east side of Kirby, where the now-defunct Hard Rock Cafe and Anthony's restaurant buildings sit. About five years after real estate developer William Dickey died, his family decided to relinquish control of nearly eight acres of land on Kirby. Bids for the property were solicited in May by Wulfe & Co. Of the more than 20 offers that came in, just a few are left standing, said Kenneth Katz of Wulfe & Co. In addition to the land on Kirby, the Dickeys also control long-term ground leases with Whole Foods for its West Alabama supermarket and the Ainbinder Co., which owns the Borders bookstore shopping center across the street.
  2. Billboards along the freeways are one thing, but digital boards playing video are another. Anyone else envision them becoming so distracting that wrecks happen more frequently in proximity to them. A few accidents and lawsuits later I believe this will be re-thought very quickly. But don't expect the campaign against billboards to be easy. Someone is making money off these things, and they wont allow their wallets to get lighter without a fight. They will take on anyone who wants to get these things removed. At the very least they can get rid of billboards that are not along highways... especially the ones near me that we've wanted gone for nearly 20 years and more.... check Buffalo Speedway, between West Alabama and Westheimer, across from the Lamar Tower Condominiums. It's, for the most part, a residential area, leading right into River Oaks... complete with advertising eyesores.
  3. Lockmat discovered this development from a link that TheNiche posted in the "Dome over Houston" thread. Europa at Houstonian Lakes, a 500-acre master planned community. LandQuest development group (or L Star, they've recently partnered with Starwood development) is the developer. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm99/YahTrickYah57/22.jpg http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm99/YahTrickYah57/23.jpg http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm99/YahTrickYah57/25.jpg http://www.enzoinv.com/brochure/brochure.htm (pg. 20-23) Edit: TMC BioPort:
  4. I alluded to this in the 2929 Wesleyan thread but now that bisnow referenced it this morning I figured it was ok to talk about. PM is redeveloping the solvay site by tearing down the existing bldg and replacing it w a hotel/condo and building a 20 story office next door. I can't confirm much re the hotel but it sounds like the office is moving forward and would assume the hotel is as well. Don't expect anything earth shattering architecturally speaking. Should be a nice addition regardless. There are a few more projects proposed in the immediate area as well, some further along than others, but 3333 sounds like the closest thing to a guarantee.
  5. Here is something recently mentioned on Swamplot. Does anyone know anything about this project? http://www.kirksey.com/project/buffalo_lakes_master_plan Page 10 of this PDF http://www.ridemetro.org/ProjectsPrograms/PDFs/90A_Media_Briefing_020711.pdf shows rail going through the project.
  6. Sure do I was a regular there along with my dear deceased friend Buddy Bryant,, Club owner was Bud along with Goofy's Game room
  7. Alcon is an American Swiss medical company specializing in eye care products with headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and incorporated in Fribourg, Switzerland. Alcon began as a US company and its US subsidiary’s headquarters remain in Fort Worth, Texas, where the Alcon division of the company was founded. https://www.alcon.com/ I drive by this large complex located at the intersection of West Bellfort & Buffalo Speedway with an address of 9965 Buffalo Speedway. I often wonder what such a large parcel of land could turn into. Alcon must own 20 to 40 acres right there? The next major BioTech campus once TMC3 and Levit Green are completed? Of course, I'd hope, that UT and others would have finally developed the 307-acres down the block at Buffalo Speedway, Willowbend, and Holmes road.
  8. Can we discuss this small road that forms a loop from Buffalo Speedway to Holmes Road? The road is sandwiched in between the University of Texas controlled 307-acres and the Texas Medical Center controlled 500-acres. When travelling on Holmes Road, the loop road is a short cut to Buffalo Speedway. The loop makes a lot of sense and saves time when driving. All of the land in the immediate area is vacant. Since the Buffalo Speedway Connector is road that is off the beaten path, in the middle of inhabited land, the area is a prime spot for illegal dumping. The illegal dumping is mostly large items such as tires, contractor supplies, and lawn clipping bags. The illegal dumping is so bad the city setup 2 cameras to try and catch the dumpers. Since then, the dumping has gotten better but it is still a problem. It is still unclear if the TMC 500-acre land grab contains this parcel. 6 months ago I noticed some civil work within the Buffalo Speedway Connector land. I assume the construction activity was in preparation of the closing sale of the 500-acres. I think the 500-acres is everything south of Holmes Road on Buffalo Speedway to Airport Blvd. Which, if that's the case, the land is covered under their purchase. My question is, I wonder if TMC has the power to clean this place up. Could the TMC prevent illegal dumping? What would work is if the TMC developed the land in and around the Buffalo Speedway Connector and had grounds-maintenance on a daily basis. I know in some Hines buildings, the Hines Property Management team has a cleaning crew that spans the entire day. Someone is cleaning from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Then the overnight cleaning crew comes in and cleans the individual offices and suites. The TMC Medical Campus is always very clean with great landscaping and flowery medians. I'd hope to see the same here, when the TMC BioPort development gains traction and occupancy. Not much is known about this loop road. I wanted to create a thread for more visibility and information for people. Google Maps lists the road as "Buffalo Speedway" and omits the "Connector" part.

  10. wow!! This 1960s building is awesome looking! Never knew about it until this week. Does anyone remember this place, or business? I wonder the architect of this cool building? Location of old building? Was this where the current Exxon gas station is? At the intersection Buffalo Speedway & Danville Street. Article in the newspaper The Bellaire Texan dated December 5, 1962. 11. Mission Constructors is one of Houston's famed construction companies founded in 1978. They have done a lot of projects in the Houston area, but one of the projects that stands out is the Museo Plaza on Fannin Street. I wonder when the 60 year old building at 3818 Buffalo Speedway will be demolished? The current tenant is Mission Constructors. They actually might own the building? I often drive by and think of it as being out of place and surrounded by high rises. Website: https://missionconstructors.com/
  12. Anyone familiar with this church? It's way, way down Buffalo Speedway! Isn't Lily of the Valley a deadly flower? Or, there is a flower that has a similar sounding name that is poisonous. Website: https://lovcogicinternational.com/
  13. Noticed this old, expired, Loopnet listing this week. https://www.loopnet.com/Listing/5206-5270-Buffalo-Speedway-Houston-TX/11995005/ Interesting that the Walgreens in the same center is not apart of the development. Unless if I'm misreading things.
  14. I was browsing the newspaper The Jewish Herald-Voice dated December 20, 1973 and came across a business advertisement for Judd McIlvains El PoPo Mexican Restaurant located at 9228 Buffalo Speedway. Did anyone ever eat here? What ever happened with the family of Judd McIlvain? I wonder if there are any photos of the building, or matchbooks from the restaurant? The food looks fantastic! I don't think I've ever had Popocatepetl-style Mexican food before. I wonder how their mole is different? I know there is like 5 types of mole from different regions. 15. Noticed a large housing development a long Buffalo Speedway ear West Orem by K. Hovnanian Homes. Brentwood subdivision. Looks like some of the land is reserved for a church expansion and other future uses. Lots of land out in the area of Buffalo Speedway. I've been watching it develop. In 20 years all the trees will disappear.
  16. I was browsing the newspaper The Rice Thresher dated November 14, 1986 and came across an advertisement for Bissonnet Plaza Apartments located at 5104 Buffalo Speedway. There were two different apartment complexes on each side of the street. Looks to be have built in the 1950s and demolished in the late 1980s or 1990s. The two shopping centers were built in replace of these apartments? Plaza In The Park Shopping Center and Terrace Shops Shopping Center. Any pictures of the apartment complex? 18. I was browsing the newspaper The Rice Thresher dated April 18, 1986 and February 7, 1986 and came across these advertisements for Greenway Apartments located at 5101 Buffalo Speedway. 19. I know there has been a lot of vacant land in this area up until recently, but the neighboring single story storage facilities seem like such a massive waste of real estate. Discount mini storage (9419 Buffalo Speedway) alone has about 5 acres of land. Unfortunately, this stretch of South Main is littered with them
  20. Any pics.,or comments pertaining to this establishment?
  21. Very cool find! Apparently 60 years ago, Buffalo Speedway in River Oaks/Greenway Plaza was an industrial area filled with oil and gas and technology companies. One company is still there, Texas Crude Energy located at 2803 Buffalo Speedway. This building was across the street from the Exxon Upstream Research Company Campus at 3102 Buffalo Speedway. I'm not exactly sure which building it is on old aerials. From the magazine Geophysics dated October 1956: Houston Technical Laboratories (HTL) A subsidiary of Texas Instruments Incorporated 3609 Buffalo Speedway * Houston 6, Texas * Cable: Houlab
  22. I was browsing the magazine Offshore dated November 1955 and came across an awesome office building located at 3815 Buffalo Speedway. Anyone know the architect? It's so simple, but so cool! New home of United Core, Inc. of Houston, is this building at 3815 Buffalo Speedway. Facilities for the company, a petroleum well logging and engineering firm, include offices, an accounting department, a production laboratory, a research laboratory, and printing and drafting rooms.
  23. Noticed this on Wulfe & Co's website. Cool little retail center. This is at the corner of South Main and Buffalo Speedway, off of the South Loop 610.

  25. Very cool find! Looks like there was a La Quinta Inn (later Motel 6?) located in the Central Houston Nissan campus off of the South Loop and Buffalo Speedway/Fannin area. I believe the La Quinta Inn Astrodome was renamed to La Quinta Inn Houston Medical/Reliant Center? I know the (present-day) Motel 6 is located near the Central Houston Nissan campus. Maybe Nissan purchased the old motel to expand their campus and it was demolished so they moved down the block? Current address for the Motel 6 is 3223 South Loop West. If you look on satellite, you can see what looks like a previous, white, foundation on the surface lot. This must be the demolished building leftovers? La Quinta Astrodome (E2), 9911 Buffalo Speedway; 713-668-8082. Edit: This was from a 2005 City of Houston guide.
