This is one of the Mitchell (Michael) Louis Westheimer's companies. Westheimer storage was founded in the late 1800's. I was doing some research on Mr. Westeimer, he had a lot of companies! I almost bought some antiques on Ebay I stopped by the other day to snap a picture. I wonder if this is the last standing modern-day building of theirs. The family no longer owns it. The family sold the company some 50-years ago.

Alcon began as a US company and its US subsidiary’s headquarters remain in Fort Worth, Texas, where the Alcon division of the company was founded. https://www.alcon.com/ I drive by this large complex located at the intersection of West Bellfort & Buffalo Speedway with an address of 9965 Buffalo Speedway. I often wonder what such a large parcel of land could turn into. Alcon must own 20 to 40 acres right there? The next major BioTech campus once TMC3 and Levit Green are completed? Of course, I'd hope, that UT and others would have finally developed the 307-acres down the block at Buffalo Speedway, Willowbend, and Holmes road.

Houston Methodist has leased space in the small retail center a long Buffalo Speedway. Not to be confused with the huge shopping center named Plaza In The Park by Eden. This small retail center is developed by Lovett Commercial and has an address of 5110 Buffalo Speedway.

Noticed a large housing development a long Buffalo Speedway ear West Orem by K. Hovnanian Homes. Brentwood subdivision. Looks like some of the land is reserved for a church expansion and other future uses. Lots of land out in the area of Buffalo Speedway. I've been watching it develop. In 20 years all the trees will disappear.

This shopping center is at Buffalo Speedway & Westpark. Across the street from H-E-B. This center is anchored by Kroger. Noticed Vietopia vacated their spot after a decade. They are now located at the Southwest Freeway service road by Whataburger. Went to eat there last night. Same great food! Definitely a smaller footprint. Probably had to downsize due to Covid. I know there has been a lot of vacant land in this area up until recently, but the neighboring single story storage facilities seem like such a massive waste of real estate. Discount mini storage (9419 Buffalo Speedway) alone has about 5 acres of land. Unfortunately, this stretch of South Main is littered with them

I alluded to this in the 2929 Wesleyan thread but now that bisnow referenced it this morning I figured it was ok to talk about. PM is redeveloping the solvay site by tearing down the existing bldg and replacing it w a hotel/condo and building a 20 story office next door. I can't confirm much re the hotel but it sounds like the office is moving forward and would assume the hotel is as well. Don't expect anything earth shattering architecturally speaking. Should be a nice addition regardless. There are a few more projects proposed in the immediate area as well, some further along than others, but 3333 sounds like the closest thing to a guarantee.- 255 replies

Billboards along the freeways are one thing, but digital boards playing video are another. Anyone else envision them becoming so distracting that wrecks happen more frequently in proximity to them. A few accidents and lawsuits later I believe this will be re-thought very quickly. But don't expect the campaign against billboards to be easy. Someone is making money off these things, and they wont allow their wallets to get lighter without a fight. They will take on anyone who wants to get these things removed. At the very least they can get rid of billboards that are not along highways... especially the ones near me that we've wanted gone for nearly 20 years and more.... check Buffalo Speedway, between West Alabama and Westheimer, across from the Lamar Tower Condominiums. It's, for the most part, a residential area, leading right into River Oaks... complete with advertising eyesores.- 5 replies

Great Southern Life Insurance Co. occupied a building on this corner in the mid-50's. I had a summer job there just after I graduated from high school. There was a park called Dunlavy Park just south of there that had a swimming pool. I have no idea how long Great Southern was there. Seems like I remember a Great Southern building near Richmond and Buffalo Speedway when I worked for TI on the SE corner of Buffalo Speedway and Richmond in the early-mid 60's. Does anyone know the evolution of the occupancy of the Richmond-Dunlavy corner from the 50's on? -
Prime Land Up For Grabs By Nancy Sarnoff - 2004 A pair of prime parcels of inner-city real estate is about to change hands for the first time in decades. Apartment developers are in negotiations with the William Dickey estate for six acres of coveted land on Kirby Drive. Gables Residential and the Hanover Co. are lined up to take control of two tracts on the west side of Kirby just south of Westheimer, according to real estate sources. The proposed projects will replace the River Oaks Tennis Club and an adjacent retail center that currently occupy the land. The Dickeys, an old-line Houston family that has owned most of the land along Kirby between Westheimer and West Alabama for more than a century, put the property on the block earlier this year. The family, which has maintained control of much of its land through long-term ground leases, is expected to sell the two acres to Hanover and lease the four acres to Gables. The Dickeys are also looking to lease about two acres on the east side of Kirby, where the now-defunct Hard Rock Cafe and Anthony's restaurant buildings sit. About five years after real estate developer William Dickey died, his family decided to relinquish control of nearly eight acres of land on Kirby. Bids for the property were solicited in May by Wulfe & Co. Of the more than 20 offers that came in, just a few are left standing, said Kenneth Katz of Wulfe & Co. In addition to the land on Kirby, the Dickeys also control long-term ground leases with Whole Foods for its West Alabama supermarket and the Ainbinder Co., which owns the Borders bookstore shopping center across the street.- 379 replies
