  3. Anyone familiar with this church? It's way, way down Buffalo Speedway! Isn't Lily of the Valley a deadly flower? Or, there is a flower that has a similar sounding name that is poisonous. Website: https://lovcogicinternational.com/
  4. Noticed this old, expired, Loopnet listing this week. https://www.loopnet.com/Listing/5206-5270-Buffalo-Speedway-Houston-TX/11995005/ Interesting that the Walgreens in the same center is not apart of the development. Unless if I'm misreading things.
  5. I was browsing the newspaper The Jewish Herald-Voice dated December 20, 1973 and came across a business advertisement for Judd McIlvains El PoPo Mexican Restaurant located at 9228 Buffalo Speedway. Did anyone ever eat here? What ever happened with the family of Judd McIlvain? I wonder if there are any photos of the building, or matchbooks from the restaurant? The food looks fantastic! I don't think I've ever had Popocatepetl-style Mexican food before. I wonder how their mole is different? I know there is like 5 types of mole from different regions. 6. I was browsing the newspaper The Rice Thresher dated November 14, 1986 and came across an advertisement for Bissonnet Plaza Apartments located at 5104 Buffalo Speedway. There were two different apartment complexes on each side of the street. Looks to be have built in the 1950s and demolished in the late 1980s or 1990s. 8. I was browsing the newspaper The Rice Thresher dated April 18, 1986 and February 7, 1986 and came across these advertisements for Greenway Apartments located at 5101 Buffalo Speedway. Looks like they were developed by River Oaks Management Company. There were two different apartment complexes on each side of the street. Looks to be have built in the 1950s and demolished in the late 1980s or 1990s. The two shopping centers were built in replace of these apartments? 9. Very cool find! Apparently 60 years ago, Buffalo Speedway in River Oaks/Greenway Plaza was an industrial area filled with oil and gas and technology companies. One company is still there, Texas Crude Energy located at 2803 Buffalo Speedway. This building was across the street from the Exxon Upstream Research Company Campus at 3102 Buffalo Speedway. I'm not exactly sure which building it is on old aerials. From the magazine Geophysics dated October 1956: Houston Technical Laboratories (HTL) A subsidiary of Texas Instruments Incorporated 3609 Buffalo Speedway * Houston 6, Texas * Cable: Houlab
  10. I was browsing the magazine Offshore dated November 1955 and came across an awesome office building located at 3815 Buffalo Speedway. Anyone know the architect? It's so simple, but so cool! New home of United Core, Inc. of Houston, is this building at 3815 Buffalo Speedway. Facilities for the company, a petroleum well logging and engineering firm, include offices, an accounting department, a production laboratory, a research laboratory, and printing and drafting rooms.
  11. Noticed this on Wulfe & Co's website. Cool little retail center. This is at the corner of South Main and Buffalo Speedway, off of the South Loop 610.
  12. Mission Constructors is one of Houston's famed construction companies founded in 1978. They have done a lot of projects in the Houston area, but one of the projects that stands out is the Museo Plaza on Fannin Street. I wonder when the 60 year old building at 3818 Buffalo Speedway will be demolished? The current tenant is Mission Constructors. They actually might own the building? I often drive by and think of it as being out of place and surrounded by high rises. Website: https://missionconstructors.com/
  13. Very cool find! Looks like there was a La Quinta Inn (later Motel 6?) located in the Central Houston Nissan campus off of the South Loop and Buffalo Speedway/Fannin area. I believe the La Quinta Inn Astrodome was renamed to La Quinta Inn Houston Medical/Reliant Center? I know the (present-day) Motel 6 is located near the Central Houston Nissan campus. Maybe Nissan purchased the old motel to expand their campus and it was demolished so they moved down the block? Current address for the Motel 6 is 3223 South Loop West. If you look on satellite, you can see what looks like a previous, white, foundation on the surface lot. This must be the demolished building leftovers? La Quinta Astrodome (E2), 9911 Buffalo Speedway; 713-668-8082. Edit: This was from a 2005 City of Houston guide.
  14. I noticed we didn't have a thread for the Eden's Terrace Shops Shopping Center at 5115 Buffalo Speedway. I remember going to Qin Dynasty Chinese Restaurant with my coworkers back in the day. I've also been in that Starbucks as well. Website: https://edens.com/property/terrace-shops/
  15. Can we discuss this small road that forms a loop from Buffalo Speedway to Holmes Road? The road is sandwiched in between the University of Texas controlled 307-acres and the Texas Medical Center controlled 500-acres. When travelling on Holmes Road, the loop road is a short cut to Buffalo Speedway. The loop makes a lot of sense and saves time when driving. All of the land in the immediate area is vacant. Since the Buffalo Speedway Connector is road that is off the beaten path, in the middle of inhabited land, the area is a prime spot for illegal dumping. The illegal dumping is mostly large items such as tires, contractor supplies, and lawn clipping bags. The illegal dumping is so bad the city setup 2 cameras to try and catch the dumpers. Since then, the dumping has gotten better but it is still a problem. It is still unclear if the TMC 500-acre land grab contains this parcel. 6 months ago I noticed some civil work within the Buffalo Speedway Connector land. I assume the construction activity was in preparation of the closing sale of the 500-acres. I think the 500-acres is everything south of Holmes Road on Buffalo Speedway to Airport Blvd. Which, if that's the case, the land is covered under their purchase. My question is, I wonder if TMC has the power to clean this place up. Could the TMC prevent illegal dumping? What would work is if the TMC developed the land in and around the Buffalo Speedway Connector and had grounds-maintenance on a daily basis. I know in some Hines buildings, the Hines Property Management team has a cleaning crew that spans the entire day. Someone is cleaning from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Then the overnight cleaning crew comes in and cleans the individual offices and suites. The TMC Medical Campus is always very clean with great landscaping and flowery medians. I'd hope to see the same here, when the TMC BioPort development gains traction and occupancy. Not much is known about this loop road. I wanted to create a thread for more visibility and information for people. Google Maps lists the road as "Buffalo Speedway" and omits the "Connector" part.
  16. I noticed a small remodel permit that was pulled. This 2-story office is sitting on very, very valuable land. I wonder when the old 2-story office building will no longer be feasible.
  17. I was reading the newspaper The Rice Thresher dated August 21, 1987 and came across a full-page ad for Chanello's Pizza located at 5233 Buffalo Speedway. Did anyone ever eat here? How does it rank to the rest of the Houston pizza pie restaurants?
  18. I was browsing the newspaper The Jewish Herald-Voice dated April 11, 1974 and came across this small Kosher market and deli. Called Goodman Foods located at 9224 Buffalo Speedway. Phone: 667-7711. Looks like this is the current site of the town home community called Pemberton Circle? Also across the street is that new senior living complex called The Tradition Buffalo Speedway located at 9339 Buffalo Speedway. Did anyone ever go here? Or knew about it before the demolition? Was this in a small strip center by any chance? This was demolished to make way for residential, so I assume it took out something fairly large. - If it's kosher, we have it - Under supervision of Houston Rashruth Association.
  19. I don't think we have a thread for the St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church located at 5308 Buffalo Speedway. How long has the church been there? I'm sure they'd been there for 40+ years? Anyone ever attend service here? This is located at Buffalo Speedway & Bissonnet near the HEB.
  20. I was browsing the newspaper Southwestern Times dated March 30, 1950 and cam across an ad for Hodell and Company Real Estate Counselors Southern Oaks Field Office located on Buffalo Speedway At Underwood St. What ever happened with this company? Did it get bought out and merged or did it completely fold under? Hodell and Company's main office was at 2111 Westheimer with a phone number of KE 2501. Love this building!! Very cool!
  21. Found this matchbook on Ebay for Romana Cafeteria located at 5215 Buffalo Speedway. What's the story of this place? Was it bought out by Wyatt's Cafeteria (turned Luby's) and then this particular location closed? Looks like this is was located at the present-day HEB on Bissonnet & Buffalo Speedway. Was this restaurant in the Speedway Shopping Center? The Speedway Shopping Center was active in the 1960s. I'm not sure when Romana Cafeteria was in operation. Another location of Romana Cafeteria was at 6223 Bellaire Blvd. at Hillcroft Ave.
  22. I was researching Houston retail the other day and came across this old, now demolished, shopping center called Speedway Shopping Center. This is the current day HEB parcel on the corner of Buffalo Speedway & Bissonnet. Do we know who was the developer? I wonder the list of stores here? I can see: Hi Hat Cleaners Max's Beauty Salon Buffalo Pharmacy Barber Shop Records Lewis & Coker Liquor Store Does anyone recall this old retail center? Memories or pictures? August 24, 1964: This pylon stands on Buffalo Speedway north of Bissonnet, marking the location of the newly renovated and enlarged Speedway Shopping Center. Located on a five-acre tract, the center contains 38,000 square feet of floor space and its stores and shops offer a wide variety of merchandise and services.
  23. Coming soon!!! Chevron Star Stop- Car Wash, Taqueria, and Washateria located on the corner of Buffalo Speedway and West Airport Blvd. It's possible TMC bought the land for their TMC BioPort campus. We will see if the Chevron gets built anytime soon. I was joking the intersection should build an Exxon to complete the trifecta of Shell, Chevron, and Exxon. I wonder who HAIF prefers
  24. The Shell Star Stop gas station at the corner of Buffalo Speedway & West Airport Blvd. was built in only 6 months. The developer had to clear vacant forest land to build. There is a planned Chevron across the street. They are pulling a South Post Oak & Willowbend. Maybe they can add an Exxon on the other corner (for sale listed by JLL) which would replicate the SPO & Willowbend intersection. Anyway, if things go as planned. This intersection will be booming with activity in a few years. The TMC BioPort Campus is located here. Picture I took a few days ago.
  25. I forgot the date to this business ad I found. I believe it was the 1940s/1950s. S.M. Griffis Company located at 5624 Buffalo Speedway. "For prompt, careful, efficient handling, list your real estate for sale with us today. There is a ready market for residential properties right now. "
