  1. I was there once, if I am thinking of the right place, but I can not say where it was. I went with 2 friends on a summer night in 1964 or 65. I have a better memory of going to La Maison when it was in a former grocery store, in 1965. I think these places were popular with kids from all over Houston. My cousin from the East End spent a lot time at both places as well as friends from SW Houston. There was a small, very short lived, 'teen club' on Bissonett in Bellaire near the Bellaire bowling alley. It was called Mad Daddy's Inferno. That name jumping out of my memory is too bizarre, a true flash from the past.
  2. Does anyone know details about the pending demolition/rebuild of Horn Elementary in Bellaire? Architect? Design? Timeline? I heard that it was scheduled for this summer and current students would be shipped out until completion of the new school. I attended school there from 3rd-5th grades and know that even then it was outgrowing the space, but I am scared of what will be put in its place (especially if it will try to blend in the "new" style of the neighborhood). The only information I could (hastily) find was this, from the news page of the school: Rebuild Horn Committee It is not too late to get involved in the planning and rebuilding of our new school! Everyone is welcome!!! We are currently touring schools rebuilt under the 2002 bond and we still have several schools, which we need to assign out to be toured. We would like all school tours to be completed by the end of February 2008. Many of you may know there is pending litigation over the bond, but we are still moving forward as we know that eventually this will all be resolved and we want to be prepared. We have developed a list of questions for the volunteers touring the school to ask their tour guides and have solicited input from those impacted under the previous bond as well. If that doesn't work for you, there are numerous ways you can help so please consider doing your part! Once the tours are complete, we will assemble our "wish-list" for Horn and then the fun begins! We will likely want to do some additional fundraising to make sure that our new school has all the "perks" we can provide but it DOES take a village! It is going to be an exciting time for Horn in the upcoming months and I know you will want to be a part of it! If you would like to be involved, please email Maggie Solomon. Thanks so much! http://es.houstonisd.org/hornes/hornnotes/hornnotes.html
  3. St. Agnes Academy has bought the old Gillman Dealership property in Sharpstown. The attached letter went out to parents and alumni: ************************************* Dear St. Agnes Academy parents, friends and alumnae: I am excited to announce St. Agnes Academy purchased 18.709 acres of vacant property at the corner of Fondren Road and Bellaire Boulevard today. Acquiring this property, which is just minutes from our existing St. Agnes facilities, marks a major milestone in carrying out our strategic plan. This endeavor supports our mission to provide a state-of-the-art learning facility for our students. Most of you are aware the St. Agnes Board of Directors periodically adjusts the Academy’s strategic plan. Two years ago, we sought input from all of our constituencies and created a blueprint that will guide campus development for the next five years. One of the resulting goals was to have excellent facilities for our school’s programs and activities. After reviewing our existing facilities, we realized the limitations of our present, land-locked campus. Additional parking, athletic fields and events space, and an upgrade to our auditorium (built in 1963), are major issues that surfaced in the review. Our assessment found that, in order to expand, St. Agnes would need to either relocate some of our athletic programs or build a parking garage on our current campus to free up room for field space. Our Board of Directors considered both options very carefully before moving forward with researching and purchasing land. Acquiring this property is an exciting step toward making our vision for the future become reality. It is the beginning of a process that will require much effort, many prayers, and your continued financial support. We are blessed to have such a generous community partner with us in advancing our mission, and we look forward to your participation in the future. We will keep you posted on our progress in the months ahead. Thank you for your continued support of our efforts at St. Agnes as we provide the very best in Catholic, college-preparatory education for Houston-area young women. God bless you, Sr. Jane Meyer, O.P., Head of School ******************************** There's also an article in Swamplot about it. Needless to say, everyone in the surrounding neighborhoods is ecstatic about this development.
  4. Does anyone remember these: I attended a nursery school in 1952 - I was four. It was somewhere in "downtown" Bellaire. I think it was called Playhouse or Playmates. The one thing that I remember the most was that they had a tricycle merry-go-round. There were about 8 - 10 tricycles mounted on a platform and only went around if all the children were pedaling. Edit: September 2, 1954 Playmates Pre-School 5221 Spruce / MA-2987 Mrs. Herbert Rohloff . . . Mrs. Howard Dunaway The other one is the first place I taught in the early 70s. It was just east of Post Oak, but I don't remember if it was off of Willowbend or West Bellfort. It was called Town & Country School and Camp. The people who owned it were named Bobo. I tried to find it on google, but I'm not sure. There is something south of Willow Park that looks like it could be a school. Edit: September 13, 1961 Town & Country School. Off Willowbend Blvd. at 11524 Craighdead - MO 5-1148. Mrs. N.R. Bobo, Owner. Can anyone help with either of these?
  5. Did anyone see the house on Dashwood that's up for sale? I guess the 2007 Good Brick Award put the owner in the selling mood. http://tinyurl.com/y7b36o
