  1. I was browsing the newspaper The Bellaire Texan dated June 22, 1966 and came across a business listing for D&K Dis-Kount Gorcery Store located at 3634 Bellaire Blvd. Did anyone ever shop here?
  2. I was browsing the newspaper The Bellaire Texan dated September 23, 1964 and came across a business ad for Anderson Drug located at 4566 Bissonnet Street. Does anyone recall this local pharmacy? I wonder who was the owner/druggist. Probably someone with a last name of Anderson is my guess. This was somewhere at Bissonnet and Newcastle. Where Shipley's is? Or where the Fidelis building is?
  3. I was browsing the newspaper The Bellaire & Southwestern Texan dated December 29, 1965 and came across a business ad for Rettig’s Drive-In Restaurant located at 7205 Hillcroft Ave. Did anyone ever eat here? I unfortunately never gotten a chance to try it. How many locations in Houston did they have? I know of 1932 W. Gray St. 2410 W. Holcombe Blvd. 7205 Hillcroft Ave.
  4. I was browsing The Bellaire Texan dated September 2, 1964 and came across this business ad for A&W Restaurant Drive-In located at 4001 Bellaire at Stella Link. Looks like September 2, 1964 was around their grand opening. I believe this was once mentioned on HAIF? Probably in a Historic Houston thread about restaurants or in a Bellaire history thread. Was this a competitor of the other Root Beer based drive-ins? Weber's Root Beer Stands. Share your memories!!
  5. I was browsing the newspaper The Texan dated November 14, 1956 and came across a business ad for Meyer Bros. Department Store located at At Bellaire Blvd. At 3rd St. (Presumably 5002 Bellaire Blvd.) I believe this was a stand a lone building? The current site has a Walgreens. The original building must have been demolished. A little confused about the history of the Meyer Bros. They created two businesses? One was a department store (Meyer Bros.) and the other was a grocery store/market called The White House? There are countless advertisements for Meyer Bros. in the 50s and 60s. If I find a cool ad I'll post it. Pretty much all the same though. Any HAIFers have memories here? Do share!! I found a location list of Meyer Bros. locations. See the below quote.
  6. I was browsing The Bellaire & Southwestern Texan dated September 23, 1964 and came across a business listing for Dugan's Drug Store No. 2 located at 5018 Bellaire Blvd. What's the deal with Mading's Drug Stores and Dugan's Drug Stores? Didn't they merge?
  7. I was browsing The Texan newspaper dated June 22, 1966 and came across a business listing for a Sears Appliance store located at 5331 Bellaire Blvd. Anyone ever shop here? Was this in a standalone building that was demolished?
  8. I was reading The Citizen dated May 26, 1948 and came across a business listing for Blasingame Drug Store located at 3640 Bellaire Blvd. Anyone recall this place? I'd love to here more information. Do... Exactly as your doctor orders. Our specialty is prescriptions M. 2-2200 Homer Blasingame, Reg. Pharmacist, Sole Owner 3640 Bellaire Boulevard
  9. I was browsing The Bellaire Texan dated December 9, 1948 and noticed a business ad for Guy H. GIbbs Bellaire Drive-In Grocery Store located at 204 N. Rice Ave. Very cool! I've never even heard of this. Anyone recall memories here? Looks like they had another location (possibly including delivery services) at 5104 Cedar Street. "Guy H. Gibbs Your Bellaire Grocer"
  10. In regard to the Hitchin' Post thread below, there was also a Hitchin' Post eatery on Bissonett & Bonhomme for a few years in the late 60's--this later became a hangout called Chubby Chucks..curious if anyone has recall on either of these!
  11. I was browsing the newspaper The Bellaire Texan dated May 13, 1959 and came across this business ad for Parish Stables located at 9825 Old Richmond Road (now Bissonnet Street.) Bellaire had two stables? That's incredible. I guess it really was vacant land back then.
  12. While browsing the The Bellaire Texan magazine dated April 3, 1957 I found a business ad for Whitehill Stables at 5418 Dashwood Dr. "One block off Chimney Rock Road Behind Chimney Rock Nursery" Recently under new management, Whitehill Stables & School of Riding (formally the Bellaire Stables.) Sandy Whitehall proprietor and instructor. J. Jones resident farrier. Horace Alley trainer & instructor.

  14. This shopping center located at 5400 - 6810 Bellaire Blvd. has some history. First opened in February 1956. I've been visiting this center a lot lately. Bernie's Burger Bus is addicting! Figured I'd make a thread to keep track of the comings & goings. https://www.loopnet.com/Listing/5400-6810-Bellaire-Blvd-Bellaire-TX/11995514/
  15. Noticed a Fidelis Realty Expansion on TDLR this week.
  16. Don't forget Randall's & Whole Foods on Bellaire Blvd, plus the Randall's on Weslayen. The grocery market in the West U area is already saturated; when the "super Kroger" opened, it took a lot of business away from the Weslayen Randall's. The new HEB will probably put the nail in the coffin for the Weslayan Randall's, as it is the oldest grocery store in the area, and was designed to 1980s standards.
  17. I’ve heard through the grapevine that the leases of Fiesta and the small pod that includes the Fiesta liquor store aren’t invited to be renewed. I’m not sure about the rest of the shopping center but does anyone have any inside info on this or who even owns it?
  18. Located at 5612 S. Rice near Glenmont. https://thebrownstonegroup.net/developments/ Developments listed below are either complete or under construction. They are listed based on their completion date (or placed in service date) or the date that they are planned for completion. 2021 Developments South Rice Apartments (Houston, TX) – 115 units, new construction, tax credit development
  19. After years and years of back and forth between HISD, the architects, the school, and the community, this one finally broke ground in late March early April. This is a reconstruction of Bellaire's existing school. Originally part of the 2012 Bond referendum, this is anticipated to finally bring this massive bond to a close. Personally, I'm amazed this one ever got built. Lets just say this wasn't an easy project for those involved to develop, and there was a lot of chaos, but all of that aside the important thing is that its happening. Developer: HISD Architect: PBK Estimated Completion: 2021 (students will move back in), 2022 (final completion) Budget: $106,724,000 Article about groundbreaking (March 28th): https://blogs.houstonisd.org/news/2019/03/28/bellaire-hs-gathers-to-celebrate-start-of-construction-on-new-building/ Site Plan: Render (for some reason the only publicly avaiable render...is of the parking garage portion...oh well)
  20. Edge Realty Partners have been doing some great stuff lately. Found this while browsing their website. http://edge-re.com/Property/BellaireChimneyRock-Lease
  21. John Teas died recently and now the family is selling off the centenarian property for single home developments. Bah. From Nancy Sarnoff via Swamplot: http://blogs.chron.com/primeproperty/2009/11/teas_nursery_to_be_redeveloped.html http://swamplot.com/first-theyll-need-to-clear-out-all-that-vegetation-thats-in-the-way
  22. Always liked this building from the freeway. Wish the 610 canyon would extended into Bellaire more. https://www.loopnet.com/Listing/6330-West-Loop-S-Bellaire-TX/5837502/
  23. There has been so many discussions on various buildings going up that I find it difficult to remember to know if we covered them all. During my runs, I noticed that they knocked down the old Miller Beer wherehouse next too "Bridal mart" or whatever it's called on 59S @ 610. Any news as far as this goes? Also there is a substantial project going on at Fannin and Greenbriar (I think) Right near the dome where Fannin and the other street splits. Did we cover those two items in the past or does anyone have the skinny on the construction? Ricco
