  13. I was researching the developer of the Willowbend neighborhood of Houston. It looks like Krist Hubert was the developer of the residential subdivision in Southwest Houston. I believe other important figures in the forming of Willowbend were Frank Burkhardt, and Evera West. Krist Hubert also helped Frank Meyer develop the nearby Meyerland neighborhood as well. Appears he also built homes in Bellaire to. In the magazine House & Home dated February 1958 there was a small detail of the Willowbend neighborhood. Medium Priced: Willowbend is a community of 700 houses in the $16,000 to $20,000 class. Sixty different builders have worked here. Its trees are a big feature, were carefully protected because lots with good trees are scarce in Houston and command a good price. Developer Krist Hubert (like many other developers) got his start in the building business. He was a painting contractor, now owns a lumber yard and builds some houses himself. He helps small builders by selling one lot a a time. He also provides some construction funds. Parade plan book by Houston Home Builders Association dated 1950: Burkhardt and Hubert Construction Co. of 5104 Elm Street in Bellaire - MA-0407 built the 1950s Meyerland home at 5107 Jackwood. The home was designed by L.B. Wooters. Engineering News-Record 1960: Hubert Lumber Co., 5104 Elm St., Houston, Texas. Engineering News-Record 1957: Krist Hubert & Assocs., 5107 Jackwood St. The newspaper The Bellaire Texan dated June 29, 1955 it appears Krist Hubert lived at 5300 Aspen Drive in Bellaire, TX. Last night, Krist Hubert, 5300 Aspen, was installed as the new president of the Bellaire Lions Club at John's Restaurant. Mr. Hubert is a native Texas. He migrated from Halletsville to Houston 26 years ago. In 1948 he came to Bellaire and started a successful career in building homes. He owns the Hubert Lumber Company at 5104 Elm. Aside from building nearly 400 homes in Bellaire and neighboring areas, he has been interested in civic affairs and politics--
  14. I was browsing the newspaper The Bellaire Texan dated December 9, 1959 and came across an advertsiment for Brittain's Broiler Burger located at 5216 Bellaire Blvd. at Old Richmond Rd. A Self Service Restaurant featuring South Texas' First and Finest Charcoal Broiled Hamburgers.... "See 'em Broiling Over Real Charcoal" I assume this was the 2nd location of Brittain's Broiler Burger? I was trying to find an ad for the original location in Westbury at Westbury Square. I believe this was a Houston chain with individually owned restaurants? There were locations in Westbury, Bellaire, Gulfton, Telephone Road, and Memorial City? I believe they were originally owned and operated by C.L. Brittain.
  15. I was reading the newspaper The Bellaire Texan dated October 12, 1955 and found an article about Camp Cherokee that was located on the former site of a sanitary landfill. At the end of the article there was a few sentences that discussed a race track in Bellaire. I don't think they are speaking about the Houston Speedway (later named Bellaire Speedway.) They must be speaking about a race track within the City of Bellaire municipal limits. The dates are different. The Houston Speedway shut down in the 1930s. The article is dated in the 1950s. I thought I remembered hearing about a smaller race track in Bellaire in the 1940s/1950s. Does anyone recall this? I will see if I can find the other article giving a more precise location. Thought it was near the West Loop? I tried to look on Google Earth once and could not locate an oval track. Camp Cherokee Finally Opens. Rain and muddy roads all but postponed Camp Cherokee opening for the second time Saturday but the 100 braved the seven miles out to the sanitary fill site for the formal dedication of the acres of land turned over as a picnic ground for Bellaire families. All sporting events and demonstrations of the land fill method were cancelled. The afternoon became simply a big weiner roast (hot dogs furnished free by the Recreation Department) with miniature tracts awarded as gate prizes. Welcoming the visitors, William Byrd, chairman of the City Recreation Board, asked that Bellaire families consider the acreage as their picnic grounds and assured them the board will see that Camp Cherokee will be used for the benefit of Bellaire young. In his brief remarks, Mayor H.L. Hodell reveled that the land across the road from Camp Cherokee was now quoted at $2100 per acre compared with $685 per acre that the city paid last year. City manager Gary Summers announced that the one-fourth mile oval track is ready for midget car try-outs. Ready, that is, when the sun comes out and dries the mud.
  16. I don't think so, but I'm not positive. I always thought that the track came after the park was built. Maybe Sparky can comment. There was a dirt track off Stella Link between Bray's Bayou and Bellaire Blvd back in the late 20's - mid 30's, referred to as Bellaire Speedway, I think.
  17. I was reading the newspaper The Texan dated January 21, 1987 and came across a business advertisement for AMI Bellaire Hospital located at 5314 Dashwood Drive. Was anyone ever born here by any chance? What's up with the hospital network called AMI? Did they leave the Houston market, or merge with one of our giant TMC institutions?
  18. I was browsing the newspaper The Bellaire & Southwestern Texan dated November 4, 1970 and came across a business ad for The Lobster Kettle Restaurant located at 5710 Bellaire Blvd. Love the price of the sandwich! For a real taste treat from the coast of Maine, try a Maine Lobster Salad Sandwich - 98 cents. Another "Kettle" restaurant! The name was very poplar back in the day. Dutch Kettle At 6410 Fannin St. Kettle Restaurant At 9047 South Main St. Kopper Kettle Cafeteria At 6910 Fannin St. The Lobster Kettle Restaurant At 5710 Bellaire Blvd.
  19. I was browsing the newspaper The Citizen dated January 28, 1948 and came across an article about a proposed City of Bellaire municipal airport called Bellaire International Airport which was going to be located on Richmond Road (now Bissonnet Street) and Bellaire Boulevard. The airport master plan was designed by architecture firm Leigh Fisher Associates, Inc. Very cool find!! Signed by C.E. Nayland, president of the board of directors of the organization, the letter to Mayor Massey stated: "It is the board's opinion that the purchase of this tract of land is very desirable to provide future airport facilities which will be needed in anticipation of our city's growth. The land in question consists of a 4000-acres tract west of Richmond Road and Bellaire Boulevard lying in the Westmoreland Farm area. Glenn H. McCarthy, millionaire Houston oilman, has leased the acreage which he has offered to turn over to the airport commission for the construction of the huge air terminal.
  20. I was browsing the newspaper The Bellaire Texan dated May 7, 1969 and came across a business ad for Sizzler Restaurant located at 5616 Bellaire Blvd. Did anyone ever eat here? I know there were several Sizzler Steakhouses across town. What ever happened to that company? Did it merge with a bigger steakhouse? James Thomason's Sizzler Steak House.

  22. I was browsing the newspaper The Texan dated July 27, 1983 and came across an article about the birth of the City of Bellaire. Bellaire's founder was W.W. Baldwin, Vice President of the Burlington Railroad. Who in 1902 came to "Houston by the Sea" to look around all the railroads of the south and southwest led to Houston and Baldwin soon realized he had found what he came for. His first venture was the Westmoreland addition, a residential section four blocks long and two blocks wide bounded by West Alabama, Louisiana, Hawthorne, and Garrott Streets in the Montrose Area. The development was so successful that he began to look around for more land and in 1909 bought the 9,700 acre Jim DeMoss Ranch which was located off the end of Old South Main. To help him sell the property he hired two good real estate brokers. A.J. Condit and A.A. Buxton. They advertised the land in tracts of from one to five acres and ten acres. At prices ranging from $275 to $600 per acre. The new community needed a name and since the land was fanned by the bel-air (fine air) off the Gulf of Mexico, the name of his hometown, Bellaire, Ohio was quiet appropriate. The original limits of the community were Palmetto, Jassamine, First, and Sixth Streets.
  23. I was browsing the newspaper The Bellaire Texan dated September 28, 1966 and came across a business ad for Kip's Coffee Shop located at 5320 Bellaire Blvd. Was this the same restaurant at Kipp's Burgers? Or was it a separate business? Looks like it was just an alternative name, because on the ad it lists the famous hamburger, "Big Boy". Did anyone ever have coffee here?
  24. I was browsing the newspaper The Bellaire Texan dated September 28, 1966 and came across a business ad for Allbrittons Cafeterias located at 3835 Bellaire Blvd. "Where your calories are counted." They also had other locations as such: 3835 Bellaire Blvd. 905 Waugh (off Memorial) 2900 Weslayan 4120 McKinney Did anyone ever eat here? Was this located in the Bellaire Triangle by any chance?
  25. I was browsing the newspaper The Bellaire Texan dated June 22, 1966 and came across a business ad for Riley's Super Market located at 3851 Bellaire Blvd. Did anyone ever shop here? I'd love to hear some memories. Who exactly ran this store? What ever happened to it? Did it go under or was it merged with a bigger grocer?
