  1. I'm surprised I wasn't able to find this on HAIF. I ran a few searches, but nothing came up. Apologies if this is a repeat thread... Swamplot reported in May that the Univ. of St. Thomas will be building a new performance arts center near the Menil campus. The article indicates that the building will be four stories and just under 100k square feet. Here's the accompanying rendering: http://swamplot.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/st-thomas-performing-arts-center.jpg University of St. Thomas's Performing Arts Center Moving in Next to Menil Campus
  2. The Uptown Houston website lists this new project as: A.D. Players Theatre: New construction is planned for a performance theatre at Yorktown and Westheimer. The 85,000 square foot theatre complex will hold three theaters with a total seating of 1,000. The theatre should be complete within three years. The A.D. Players broke ground on the new location February 2006. Do we know any additional information? The AD Players theatre website does not have any information about the architect, renderings, or any other information. This will be a great venue. What else can we find out? -Yak-
  3. This was mentioned in another Midtown thread.. but figured a new project needed a new thread. Swamplot just broke a story on a new Arts Center planned for Midtown, about a block north of the Ensemble Station. 90,000 SF 3 story Owner/Developer - Independent Arts Collaborative, a consortium of local arts organizations — including Fotofest, Diverseworks, the Houston Arts Alliance, Musiqa, Suchu Dance, Opera Vista, Catastrophic Theater, Nameless Sound, the River Oaks Chamber Orchestra, and Main St. Theater.
  4. Oops. The Hobby Center has already made into an architectural book. Yes, it is included in The Phaidon Atlas of 21st Century Architecture as one of the "greatest buildings of the 21st Century."
  5. Pretty interesting exhibit and speaker series at houston center of contemporary craft going on. With its soaring expressways and seemingly endless geography, little defines Houston in the public consciousness more than urban sprawl. This fall, Houston Center for Contemporary Craft (HCCC) takes on the implications of this development pattern in the national exhibition, SPRAWL. Co-curated by former HCCC Curatorial Fellow, Susie J. Silbert and former HCCC Curator, Anna Walker, SPRAWL features 16 emerging and mid-career artists whose works deal with the urban landscape. Arranged in three sections, “Infrastructure of Expansion,” “Survey, Plan, Build,” and “Aftereffects,” which loosely define the phases of urban growth, the exhibition is intended to present a non-polemical view. As Silbert and Walker commented, “The topic of sprawl can be a lightening rod—depending on who you talk to, it can evoke visions of cookie-cutter houses and inefficient city planning or it can inspire discussions on freedom of choice and affordable housing. We wanted to harness that complexity to create an exhibition that looks at the totality of sprawl—the good, bad, and the ugly.” Speaker series Infrastructure of Expansion •October 18, 12:00 – 1:00 PM Ed Emmett, Harris County Judge •October 24, 6:00 – 7:00 PM Thomas Colbert, Associate Professor at the Gerald D. 8. Here is a link with a couple of renderings of the the Art Collective building: http://thecollective.org/ When I drove by today it seemed like they were getting ready to get to work on this building. It looks like a pretty cool building and I cannot wait to see it! Suzerain
  9. If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, Houston recently had cause to feel flattered. Renzo Piano's design for a $258 million addition to the Art Institute of Chicago bears a striking resemblance to his Cy Twombly Pavilion here. Piano told the New York Times that his plans for the famed Chicago art museum include a suspended roof that he likens to a "flying carpet." The design will allow natural light into the third floor to showcase the museum's modern-art collection. Link to article and illustrations
