  1. Amazing how the Fondren Mansion which once seemed so massive now looks like a cute puppy at the feet of its masters.
  2. elnina999 has added a photo to the pool: 412 Main St. – Houston TX (built 1923; architect Alfred Finn) View the full article
  3. It looks like they're reintroducing retail at the corner of Rusk and Main: http://www.houstontx.gov/planning/Commissions/docs_pdfs/hahc/Application_Materials/April_MATERIALS/712_Main_Gulf_Building_App_Materials.pdf
  4. Didn't see this posted anywhere else. http://www.bizjourna...m-ben-taub.html "The Harris County Hospital District is finally renovating the original Ben Taub General Hospital, a $38 million plan that’s been on the drawing board for nearly 20 years. The 50-year-old hospital has been sitting vacant since 1992, when the existing Ben Taub General Hospital opened its doors. “The plan at the time was to renovate the original hospital then and have two hospitals up and running, but the hospital district ran into some financial difficulties in the late 1990s, and we had to put it off,” said George Masi, executive vice president and COO of the Harris County Hospital District." I couldn't access anymore of the story as I don't have a subscription.
  5. I enjoyed seeing these photos, especially the one of the old Naval Hospital. I think it had already become a VA hospital when I was a kid in Houston in the late 50's/early 60's. I vaguely recall that it was located to the east of TMC on/along Holcombe. I wonder if any part of this magnificant old structure still exists today? Thanks for sharing!
  6. Originally owned by the Sterling Family, The Wortham House was completed in 1927. Frank P. Sterling commissioned architect Alfred C. Finn to design and build a home in the Broadacres Subdivision. In 1948, the widow of Frank P. Sterling, Isla Carroll Sterling Turner, and their daughter, Carroll Sterling Winston Masterson, gifted the house to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. The museum could not decide what should be done with the house, and in 1950 the house was sold to Gus and Lyndall Finley Wortham.
  7. St Pauls United Methodist on the corner of Main & Bissonet/Binz (accross from the MFAH) is one of my favorites. I probably have shot more photos there than any place else in Houston. They also have English Change Ringing Bells in the tower, I believe the biggest set west of the Missisippi.
  8. Who remembers The White House replica designed by Alfred Finn for Governor Ross Sterling? The traditional Colonial-style mansion, designed by architect Alfred Finn, was built in 1924 for former Texas Governor Ross Sterling, the 31st governor of the Lone Star State. The mansion — also known as the First Texas White House — is located on six acres at 515 Bayridge Road in La Porte.
  9. The first hospital in Houston exclusively for children would soon open in the Texas Medical Center, the Arabia Temple Shrine announced on this day in 1949. Designed by Alfred C. Finn, the hospital would actually open as the Arabia Temple Crippled Children's Hospital in 1952. Though the building was new, the Arabia Temple had been involved in pediatric care here since 1920. In 1966, the hospital became the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children. Thirty years later, Shriners Hospital for Children would move to a new location.
  10. Has anyone ever been? if so, please share your story. I love how it looks, its almost like a graceful southern plantation, but better.
