  2. Tom Koch is retiring from Ch. 13 KTRK-TV Houston after 39 years with the ABC O&O Station he announced at the end of yesterday's weekday morning newscast. His final newscast will be on May 28th. "For nearly 40 years, I've been honored & humbled that so many people welcomed me into their homes every day," Koch said in a statement emailed to mikemcguff.com. "It's been a dream come true for a small-town Wisconsin kid to be part of this incredible station & truly great city of Houston. But I've decided it's time to step aside, turn off that early morning alarm & wake up to a new adventure." The station tells Mike McGuff of mikemcguff.com the week of May 24th, will be featuring an on-air celebration featuring Koch & his many achievements will begin, with a final goodbye on May 28th, 2021. Here are some videos of Koch's time with Ch. 13 over the years: Weekday morning newscast from March 6th, 1990. February 2nd, 1991.
  3. What are your thoughts on Ch. 13 Weekday Morning Anchor Samica Knight & do you think she's doing a good job ? A.) Love her B.) Not a big fan C.) Hated her D.) TBD
  4. Sad news from the Ch. 13 Eyewitness News family. Photojournalist Willie Dixon died last night at the age of 52. He joined the ABC O&O station in 2006 from WFTV in Orlando, FL. Dixon was also a graduate of Alabama State University, where he played trombone in the ASU Hornet Marching Band. https://abc13.com/society/remembering-abc13-photojournalist-willie-dixon/6130883/ https://www.insragram.com/p/B_dMdmPjNkA/
  5. It's been 16 days & nobody hasn't seen or heard from Ch. 13 KTRK-TV Houston Weekday Morning Anchor Samica Knight, who hasn't been on the air in weeks, nor has she posted to her Social Media accounts since January 7th. According to Mike McGuff of mikemcguff.com, he also hadn't heard anything regarding Knight's whereabouts. McGuff also mentioned several Ch. 13 viewers had been emailing him, hitting him up with questions from those concerned about Knight's whereabouts. From what I can tell, Brhe Berry & Mayra Moreno had been filing-in for Knight on the weekday morning newscasts lately. This isn't the first time Knight has been missing from the Ch. 13 airwaves. In 2018, McGuff mentioned that Knight had left some clues on her Social Media accounts to let people know she was experiencing medical issues. https://mikemcguff.blogspot.com/2020/01/where-is-samica-knight-2020.html
  6. Tom Koch & Melanie Lawson celebrated their 37 year anniversaries with Ch. 13, both beginning their careers with the Houston ABC O&O Station on September 17th, 1982. Gina Gaston is celebrating 25 years with Ch. 13: beginning her first stint in 1992 as the Weekday Morning Anchor with Koch & later anchored with MSNBC NYC, NY St in 1999. She later returned to Ch. 13 in 2001, where she's been ever since. Thoughts on Koch, Lawson & Gaston's respective anniversaries with Ch. 13 ? https://mikemcguff.blogspot.com/2019/09/abc13-ktrk-anniversaries.html https://www.facebook.com/TomKochABC13/ https://www.facebook.com/ABC13MelanieLawson/
  7. Ch. 13 Reporter Christine Dobbyn is leaving the Houston ABC O&O Station after nearly 14 years... According to mikemcguff.com & the Houston Chronicle, Dobbyn said on Twitter that she's hanging up "my reporting cleats" to pursue a new chapter in life. From what McGuff heard, Dobbyn's "new chapter in life" doesn't include the TV Biz. Plus in her LinkedIn profile, she's in the middle of getting a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the Rice University's Jones Graduate School of Business. Dobbyn has been with Ch. 13 since 2005 & before she came to Houston, she was Reporter & back-up Anchor at WBNS-TV Columbus, OH. She got her start in the TV Biz at WEHT-TV Evansville, IN, where Dobbyn worked as Reporter & back-up Anchor. She also made it to the finals of Miss IN; also held titles like Indianapolis 500 Princess & Miss Heart of IN. Graduating from Ball State University, Dobbyn was named "Graduate of the Last Decade" in 1999 & also graduated from Poytner Institute & spent 2 weeks in Europe after being selected for the RTDNA-RIAS German Journalist Exchange Program. https://www.facebook.com/ABC13ChristineDobbyn/ https://mikemcguff.blogspot.com/2019/03/christine-dobbyn-to-leave-abc13-ktrk.html Thoughts on Dobbyn leaving Ch. 13 ?
  8. Ch. 13 Cameraman Photographer Jaime Zamora is reruruhg after 38 years in the TV Biz that includes 30+ years with Ch. 13! More information on this post to come later. https://mikemcguff.blogspot.com/2018/09/ktrk-photographer-jaime-zamora-retires.html?m=1
  9. I noticed that Steven Romo has been subbing in for Tom Koch in Ch. 13's Weekday Morning newscasts in the last couple of days, but where is Koch ? If anybody can tell us where he is, let us know.
  10. Good afternoon ladies & gentlemen, who remembers where you were during the Snow in Houston from February 2nd, 1980 ? http://abc13.com/news/remember-when-feb-2-1980-it-snowed-in-houston/1731718/
  11. Good afternoon. Here's one of Ch. 13's newscasts from August 23rd, 1978: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPjiMBWHJpI
  12. The exodus of Ch. 13 continues..... this time Ch. 13 Traffic Anchor & Reporter Rebecca Spera has left the ABC O&O Station: https://www.facebook.com/RebeccaSperaTV/ http://mikemcguff.blogspot.com/rebecca-spera-leaves-ktrk-abc13.html
  13. WOW! Who saw this coming ? Ch. 13 Weekend Anchor Natasha Barrett has left the ABC O&O Station! http://mikemcguff.blogspot.com/2018/04/natasha-barrett-leaves-ktrk-13.html There's possibility Mayra Moreno might move to the weekend evenings. But until then, we'll find out who replaces Barrett. Thoughts from anybody on Barrett's exit ?
  14. Ladies & Gentlemen including longtime Ch. 13 viewers, starting August 3rd, longtime weekday morning meteorologist Casey Curry will leave the weekday morning newscasts & switch places with current 11:00am/4:00pm meteorologist Travis Herzog, according to the ABC O&O station! Curry joined Ch. 13's weekday morning newscast in August of 2006 replacing Doug Brown (RIP). According to Mike McGuff of mikemcguff.com, she's a very big deal on the McGuff Blog over the years. Herzog, a graduate of Texas A&M University, joined Ch. 13 about 1 month before Curry arrived, he came from KTBX-TV CBS 3 Bryan-College Station. Of course, majority of Ch. 13 viewers really want to know why are these changes necessary ? McGuff explains that there's been recent changes & lots of turnover at the station in recent years. Expect lots more changes as well as a brand new studio set (note they've updated the set recently) including the fact the station's once-dominant weekday morning newscast hasn't been dominating since November of 2013 as other rival news stations have been upping their game in surpassing Ch. 13. Since then, KPRC-TV (NBC 2) had rose to the top in terms of being #1 in the weekday morning news shows with the morning news show winner being Fox 26 KRIV-TV! The demotion of then-weekday morning anchor Sharron Melton to a Field Anchor (who eventually left the station for good) as well as the retirement of longtime Traffic anchor Don Nelson have played major roles in these constant changes. Another theory is that the station maybe feeling to add one more male on their weekday morning newscasts since Nelson was replaced by Katherine Whaley. As usual, calls to Ch. 13's higher-ups & management haven't been returned to McGuff or anyone else. Plus, Dish customers are now complaining of a yellow screen in place or over KTRK-TV. Many have complained about the situation on Social Media. Meanwhile, Dish reported that this was Ch. 13's problem! Any reaction to the swaps ? http://mikemcguff.blogspot.com/2015/07/casey-curry-travis-herzog-ktrk-abc13-swap-switch.html
  15. Mike McGuff of mikemcguff.com and other media reports confirm that after 32 years with Ch. 13 and 40 years in the business, assistant news director Don Kobos is retiring from the Houston ABC O&O station multiple sources have told McGuff. Houston TV viewers will recognize Kobos, who joined Ch. 13 in 1982 as a reporter and often reported on Live at Five or the weeknight newscasts for example. He started out as an investigative reporter and eventually covered everything from politics, education to general assignments. Following the 2001 inauguration of George W. Bush as our 43rd President on January 20, 2001, Kobos went on to become assistant news director. http://mikemcguff.blogspot.com/2014/09/don-kobos-retires-from-ktrk-abc13.html http://www.ktrk.com/ Reaction on Kobos' retirement ? Video on some of Kobos' reporting days on Ch. 13 *HFD Fire report from November or December of 1988 because I've noticed that they didn't have Ed Brandon's picture in this open in their Live at Five newscast. December 16, 1988 10pm newscast
  16. Ladies and gentlemen, Ch. 13 has a new news director. Mike McGuff of mikemcguff.com reported that the Houston ABC O&O station has tapped Wendy Granato as the station's new top boss. Making her the station's first female news director in Ch. 13's history. If her name sounds familiar, her husband is longtime sports radio talker John Granato (now 1560 KGOW; formerly 610 KILT, Houston Texans sideline reporter and KNWS 51). She's an LSU alumnus. http://mikemcguff.blogspot.com/2014/09/wendy-granato-ktrk-abc13-news-director.html http://www.ktrk.com/ Reaction to the new hiring of Ch. 13's new news director ?
  17. Exclusive from MikeMcGuff.com, this afternoon, KTRK Ch 13 news director Dave Strickland announced to the staff in an email he's leaving the ABC-owned station. Rumors have been swirling the last few weeks that Strickland was leaving the station. He hadn't been at the station during that time. In the memo, Strickland cited the job was affecting his family, life and personal relationships. Strickland was news director for 14 years. He started at KTRK-TV as an intern, worked his way up to sports producer, then news director. In between his KTRK time, Strickland was news director of WAVY-TV 10 Norfolk, VA. http://mikemcguff.blogspot.com/2014/07/ktrk-abc13-news-director-dave-strickland-resigns.html?m=1 Reaction from this development of Strickland leaving Ch. 13 ladies and gentlemen?
