  1. There is a park that spans a few blocks called MD Anderson Wortham Linear Park that contains the Levit Family Garden located at 1212 Holcombe Boulevard. The small park actually has 2 separate water fountains! Impressive. I know who Gus Wortham is but I'm not sure who the Levit family would be. I assume the garden is named after Joe Levit, of Grocers Supply Company. The park starts on the outside of the Lowry and Peggy Mays Clinic.
  2. I was browsing the newspaper The Jewish Herald-Voice dated September 22, 1938 and came across a Happy New Year ad from Mr. and Mrs. Joe Levit and Family - 2612 Wheeler. I assume this was where Joe Levit lived back in 1938. Back then, they used to include a residential address to go a long with the news article, or photograph. The Hines Life Science development called Levit Green is named after Joe Levit and his family. Very cool!
  3. Pulling this historical information out of a Going Up! thread (Levit Green) and into it's own Historic Houston thread. Originally posted by me on April 11, 2020: Grocers Supply Co. main building at 3131 Holcombe was issued a demolition permit. The GCS headquarters building located on Holombe Blvd. and Highway 288 will be demolished by Cherry Demolition. HCAD Property Record showing the owner as 2ML Real Estate (the realty division of GCS.) City demolition permit: State TCEQ permit: Demolition pictures, spanning several months:
  4. Commerce Street was considered the wholesale produce center of Houston. Pictured here are trucks backed up to the Grocers Supply Company in 1929 waiting to shuttle produce to local markets. Noticed this amazing photograph in a historical Houston book. Houston in the 1920s and 1930s.
  5. Anything happening here? Loopnet lists the site as 20 acres. https://www.loopnet.com/portfolio-property/7300-Ardmore-St-Houston-TX/235801/
  6. The one along Holly Hall crosses freight tracks owned by UP or Houston Belt & Terminal, but the frequency of trains is very low and almost never during the daytime. At night, small trains drop off and pick up cars at the Grocers Supply Co. distribution center on Holcombe, which is where the line currently ends, but that is the only user of the tracks of which I'm aware.
