  5. I noticed in an old newspaper there was automobile racing at the Cotton Carnival back in the 1910s. I just had to research further! There was a single mention on HAIF dating back 16 years ago. Figured I could create a new thread for awareness and information. From the newspaper The Houston Post. dated July 31, 1910. Big Event This Week At Cotton Carnival Galveston, Texas Sunday- Pain's Fireworks. Monday- Life Saving Exhibition. Tuesday- Life Saving Exhibition Wednesday- Automobile Races. Red Men's Day Thursday Houston Day Automobile Races Pain's Gorgeous Fireworks! Friday- Beaumont Day Automobile Races Saturday- Shriner Day Four Band Concerts in Carnival Grounds Every Day $1.00 from Houston on all Railroads Wednesday, August 3rd, Thursday, August 4th and Friday, August 5th. The Cotton Palace — located at Avenue Q and 27th Street — was built as an addition to the 1902 Galveston Auditorium and was designed to house the Cotton Carnival’s exhibition hall https://www.rosenberg-library-museum.org/treasures/galvestons-cotton-carnival From 1909 to 1914 the Galveston Cotton Carnival featured a wildly popular auto race, on a track which ran 2.5 miles down Galveston beach, enabling a 5 mile circuit race, or if repeated, a longer race. The races were held a low tide, after a team of horses dragged railroad rails broadside down the beach, to smooth the racecourse and clear out debris accumulated from depositions of flotsam at high tide. (say one more sentence, what were winning models and speeds). In 1915, the beach was abandoned in favor of a specially designed half mile oval dirt track. https://www.torqqe.com/about/about-midkiff-warehouse/
  6. I got a physical copy of the small book called Truths, Myths, and Rumors about the City of Bellaire by J. Michael McCorkle. My book, Life and Times Around Bellaire, Texas 1909 - 2013. www.bellairebook.com Rice Avenue Drag Strip During the mid-1950s, Rice Avenue served as the drag strip for Bellaire youth. At the time Rice Avenue was a two lane paved street running along the big drainage ditch. This “strip” was dangerous because of the ditch and would never have qualified for NHRA use. Races started at Jessamine and ended at Evergreen, about a quarter mile to the south. The down side of racing on Rice Avenue was the police station just down Jessamine from the start. It is rumored that even the cops sometimes races squad cars. Races were run at midnight, then everyone high-tailed it for home before the cops could catch them.
  7. Found this cool hospital in the publication Texas State Journal of Medicine dated 1927 and thought I would share with HAIF. Would love to know if there is anyone out there that knows about this place? I do have a question. Who were apart of the staff? Owner, director, chief doctor, and on fourth. I assume Ellen Ray was the owner and chief operator? Ellen Ray Hospital and Maternity Home A quiet, secluded home for sick people, with sixteen beautiful, high-class rooms, including operation room. Strictly ethical. Something different. 6604 Avenue Q, Magnolia Park, Texas (Houston, Texas.) Telephone Wayside 2212-M.

  10. While driving earlier, I noticed roadwork being done on Washington Avenue across Bottle Blonde. Anyone have any information here? Will this lay ground for some much needed sidewalks in that area? It was always crazy to have such a vibrant nightlife district with those poor sidewalks.

  18. Join the Walking Tours Program in September as we say goodbye to one of downtown's few remaining intact historic blocks: the 800 block of Main Street, most of which is scheduled to be demolished to make way for a new skyscraper. The buildings slated for demolition include the 1913 Montagu Hotel, the 1912 Beatty-West Building and the 1940 Bond Clothes store, all of which are interesting both architecturally and historically. The tour will not only discuss those buildings, but also the evolution of Rusk Avenue from one of Houston's most desirable residential addresses in the 19th century to a major commercial thoroughfare in the early 1900s. Along the way, we'll discuss the majestic Texas Co. Building and learn about the development of Houston Center, which was intended to be a massive piece of late-1960s urban renewal. Tickets will be sold from 5:30 to 6 p.m. under the sidewalk arcade of the Texas Co. Building, San Jacinto at Rusk. [map] Street parking is free downtown on Sundays, and the Texas Co. Building is an easy walk from MetroRail's Main Street Square station. Please note that restrooms will not be available. Days may be cloudy or sunny ... In the event of inclement weather on the day of a tour, watch this page for the up-to-the-minute status of the tour and any changes dictated by the weather. Remember: GHPA walks, rain or shine!
  19. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/metrop...an/4804120.html The LULAC is trying to stop Galveston's school closures by using a desegregation order as evidence that the GISD did not contact the justice department for permission to close the schools. I believe that the schools should be let go; gentrification is inevitable and should be allowed to proceed.
