  1. Some of us have higher standards. If it makes you more comfortable to call it "elitist snobbery", go for it.
  2. That's pretty much what you get when the bishop-who is no expert on design and architecture-tells the architect what kind of dome to put on top. The rest had nowhere to go but downhill. Once again, Houston settles for the mundane.
  3. I don't think any of us have a problem with the fact Dallas doesn't have an NFL, MLS or MLB team...we just find it amusing that you get so defensive.
  4. Actually Arlington gets a new stadium and an NFL team. Dallas still has neither.
  5. Ummmm...but the Cowboys and Rangers aren't Dallas teams...so do we still need to wait 45 years?
  6. My original intent was to correct filio's incorrect definition-not to debate religion or the appropriation of an architectural style by religion. I think I succeeded in that.
  7. Well, first off, "BC" should dispel it had anything to do with Christianity and second, any architectural historian will tell you basilicas were created as secular spaces devoted to public markets, courts, assemblies, etc. They were not originated to house religious events. Even earlier basilicas in Rome lend credence to the fact they originated as purely secular places.
  8. Architecturaly it contained a central nave sometimes flanked by at least one aspe-but usually a pair-and side aisles lined with columns. In practice it was a public building that contained markets, courts and various other public functions. Ultimatly the term and architectural concept was appropriated by certain christian sects. One of the earliest was the basilique de Pomp
  9. Well, we do have a pro team with pro affiliation [one and the same in the NFL book] and it does actually play in Houston. But I'll agree, the Irving Cowboys are the better team even if Dallas is too emabarrased to host them in their city. GO ARLINGTON!!! Too funny
  10. Maybe because we actually have an MLB and NFL teams that play IN Houston? Maybe if Dallas got their own teams.... BTW, when do the Irving Cowboys move to their new stadium in Arlington?
  11. Don't confuse the issue. You speak only for yourself. Own up to your unsubstantiated generalizations and move on.
  12. It does compliment the entire city. Throw a canoe in the water at beltway 8 and travel through natural beauty as you pass untouched woodlands, million dollar mansions, skyscrapers, an opera house, a university and end up in a world class port. Just be thankful it was never cemented. Then it would compliment nothing more than those that could care less.
  13. Yeah but someone said pictures have been taken so history is preserved. I think they also said something like, "This is just a warehouse, one like so many before it that have come and gone. Life goes on." Yes indeed. Life does go on-perhaps with a lessor quality but it does seem to go on.
  14. Been there-done that. I'm not knocking it but the PS adds just the right amount of salt and pepper in the gravy and sometimes the meat is so tender you can cut it with a fork. Besides, the ambiance of the pig motif plus the stylish waitresses is unsurpassed this side of Paris...Texas
  15. I hope so because the chicken fried steak at BBQ Inn has gone to the toilet. I need my cardiac on a plate from Pig Stand!!!!!!!
  16. HL&P on Quitman Incarnate Word School Incarnate Word Steeple David Adickes Head Shop
  17. That's a long story but the short of it is: Walgreens wanted that plat to build a new store. They would not cooperate with anyone-I believe they wanted to place the dumpsters on Heights directly across from the rose garden. CVS worked with the Heights Association and others. The placed the dumpsters on the south side of the building; moved the building closer to the corner of Yale and 20th and put the drive through on Yale. The building is set back about as far away as they could get from Heights so as not to intrude as much.
  18. My guess is there will be no entrance on Main. It's a full block so entrances on Elgin, Fannin and Stuart should provide enough access.
  19. That's a pretty predictable response from someone as pompous and ill-informed as you tend to be. Why is everyone so surprised?
  20. Especially since much of it will be ez-build, aggie designed, strip center "architecture". [additional sarcasm]
