    Houston Chronicle mentions.......

    "The downtown location, 2121 Main St., has been the terminal of intercity bus transit for decades, at least since 1990 when service at another hub on Texas Avenue east of the central business district ceased."

    That's where it was at on Texas Avenue, thanks hindesky.

    I am still trying to find out what the name of the school that was at the corner of Little York and Homestead Road. It has been torn down. On the property now is the Northeast College North Forest Campus.

    What year was this in? I know that property was owned by Northshore ISD.

  3. I came across some information about the original Brock Elementary School in the First Ward. It is said that the school originally sat where Brock Park sits at now in between Bingham St. and Colorado St.

    It was Originally named Booker T. Washington Elementary before being moved to the site of the old Hawthorne Elementary school on the corner of Houston Avenue and Bingham (1418 Houston Ave.).

    Does anyone have any more information or pictures of the old Brock/Booker T. Washington Elementary School? Many thanks in advance.

    While I realize this is an old thread, hopefully someone can help me. Prior to my parents meeting, my father worked at Weingarten's #7. He's in the enclosed photo that promoted some type of sale. The photo was taken in 1945, but I believe the store was older than that. My question is does anyone know where Weingarten's No. 7 was located. I'd be very happy to find out where he actually worked.

    That building looks like the one on Harrisburg in Eastwood next to the Park. If this is the same building it is still there and I want to say it was built in the 1920's.

  5. Who was Alvin S. Moody and why was he important? When I look online all it says is that he was a Democratic Politician from the 1920's and nothing more. He must have been of significant importance if he had a Park named after him. I would like to know a little more about him than just that. If you could please share some information on him. Thank you.

    If you drive down 610 East Frwy from Downtown and exit Lockwood make a left and head about 3 miles to Englewood Freight Yards. Cross overpass and your in Englewood. The lots were very inexpensive in the 1940's especially after WWII. This little neighborhod is very close to Kashmere Gardens. Not to confuse with Denver Harbor (south of Freight Yards).

    Englewood consisted of huge undeveloped lots as in 1946 photo below. This specific area in photo is densely populated now. As vets returned from the war they quickly built new homes and started families in this working class part of the city. The railroad was just next door along with numerous trucking and distribution plants further down Liberty and Wallisville Road's. As the city boomed and new development headed west, these parts of Houston were basically forgotten. Would surprise me if any long time Houstonian's remember it. A travel back in time indeed. Check out the newly planted Magnolia tree! :)

    Hi gun,

    Here is a copy of the bus route for the 44 Acres Homes(http://www.ridemetro.org/SchedulesMaps/Pdfs/044-acres.pdf). I looks like it only comes near the Independence Heights area when it comes down Crosstimbers but it never comes directly through the neighborhood like the 66 Yale does. Do you happen to have a copy of the old Street Cart route by any chance so we could compare?

    I think you are really on to something here. Thanks.

    I found an old 1927 copy of the Houston Electric Company streetcar map. It shows streetcar route number 4 as the Studewood.  It shows it going past 27th Street then truing back around on what looks like 29th or 30th Street. I'm guessing if you were going to Independence Heights or Acres Homes in those times that was the only route..

    I did a little bit of research:

    Henry Stude owned the land where Studewood street is today.  I don't believe he ever owned the land where Independence Heights is.

    I get the impression that Stude's Woods were somewhere (or all) along present-day Studewood south of Sunset Heights.

    However, I did run across the fact that the streetcar line (and later bus route #44) that served Independence Heights was called the Studewood.

    The streetcar turned around at 30th and N.Main.  Maybe the residents back then would say they lived at the end of the Studewood line and they eventually just started calling where they were going Studewood.  And since there was no real "Stude's Woods" anymore (after the subdivisions filled in)......Just a thought.

    Hope this helps.

    EDIT:  Not sure when Metro (or its forerunner) changed the 44 from Studewood to Acres Homes.

    That is the best explanation so far. Thank you.

    Well Copperfield and Bear Creek area for sure had Latin Kings, mixed in with some Crips, Bloods. This was in the late 90s up into the early 2000s, before i moved away for the second time in my life each of the two neighborHOODs  named Northglen.   I grew up at 17802 Wolf Hollow Drive HTX 084 (1979-1992) & (1998-2002) I lived at 17414 Northhagen Drive. LKs 5 point star tattoo with a crown on top, and ive seen the same but with eyes in the star. Tells the viewer that the Latin Kings are always watching.

    Was there a gang out there during that time named "Blue Devils" or Blue Devilz"?  Where there any kind of Cholo type gangs?

    Possibly a reference to the Heights ZIP code (77008)?

    It was because of the 8 Ball Posse Gang in that area. Other gangs in that area around that time were known as follows:

    * Puro Heights
    * Sunset Heights
    * 6 1/2 Street
    * Bad Company Posse (BCP)
    * The Eight Ball Posse
    * Woodland Heights

    Just to name a few.

    Now you really have my curiousity going! :o

    Could this 2006 Fulton be the very same location of what was once known as The Stardust Ballroom? Is this where Fulton curves and bends in front of Moody Park???

    I was told that the old (now gone) Stardust was once a bowling alley but I also heard there was a theater next door? They said it was converted in the 50's?

    This is real hardcore Houston history as far as I am concerned anyway.

    The Stardust was finally swept away around 1989?

    Maybe here is the question: What now stands at 2006 Fulton? Anyone? :D

    Not that this is the least bit interesting but....

    When I visited my uncle in Rice Military, as a kid,  I would usually walk to the Lucky 7 Birdsall Supermarket at 231 Birdsall (now multiple townhomes since about 2003) to pass the time, get candy, etc

    BTW. His house was also replaced with 2 townhomes in 1998-ish.

    I'm so sick of cookie cutter town homes. I wish it would stop already.

    Just out of curiosity, when did Luck 7 go out of business? I can't find anything online about them.

    IIRC, the Hyde Park Grocery (Fairview @ Taft, currently Cuchara) was  a Lucky 7 store, as was Ventura's Market (on W. Alabama - since demolished).

    I love the Google time line too bad it only goes back to 2007.  Man Taft has changed a lot since I've visited it, use to go have pizza at the Midnight Pie.
