  1. Here is some info from bloghouston. The last post from Don_Mynack would proably represent many feelings toward the course. http://www.bloghouston.net/forum/viewtopic...&action=new
  2. That is good to hear. It is not just the people in the East End who feel strongly about the course but those that come to GW on a regular basis to play.
  3. The mayor did back off because so many objected to the demise of the course including council people. I did hear another site for the soccer field is in talks, maybe Milby Park-not for sure. Now it was stated maybe saving 9 holes for the course. These people must be thinking in terms of putt-putt. The entire course needs to remain. There are not many sites anywhere in this city that has such a fabulous history like Gus Wortham. The course also gives disadvantaged kids an opportunity to get themselves introduced to the game. People will be at City Hall this week to make their feelings known. It took one day to get a 1000 names on a petition to keep the course up. Not much more needs to be said. Will keep you informed.
  4. Although I do not live in the East End I have worked in the area for many years. I work very close to the Golf Course and it is something I look forward to seeing each day. The history of Gus Wortham G.C. in itself should declare it a landmark. It is, imo a treasure of the city. Unfortuately, the city has not kept it up very well and a movement in the East End has begun to save it. Below is a wonderful editorial by attorney Walter Boyd. A committee is being formed called Friends of Gus Wortham that will do whatever it needs to to raise funds, clean it and hopefully perserve the entire course for future generations. If you know of anyone in the East End who would like to help please pm me and please read the outstanding editorial Walter wrote. I know he has gotten much feedback on it. ( a friend of mine whose dad is a WWll veteran was a caddie at that golf course when he was a teenager, lots of wonderful memories there) http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/editor...ok/4561944.html
  5. I was involved in volunteer work for so many years with MDA. My sister and I along with several friends worked in the Americana Hotel in NYC decades ago. We are from L.I. and the $ collecting started in the summer and we were off to the city to donate and volunteer answering phones. Jerry would send my sis and I out in the streets with police escorts to continue collecting $. We did this until Jerry moved out of New York and went to I believe it was L.A. and then Vegas. (if I remember correctly). To this day decades later I have never missed contributing to this incredible cause. An irony is that my grandmother's cousin who was a senator in N.Y. did yearly announcements for Jerry asking people to give as much as they could and he himself passed away from ALS. One needs to know how long this telethon has been on air and the multi-millions raised to see what it takes for some breakthrough. I just pray one day all these diseases will be eradicated. My young nephew has cerebral palsy and I would like to see him walking one day as well.
  6. 10 years ago I sat with probably several hundreds of people as the Holocaust Museum opened its doors to the public. People of all races and nationalities heard services in a church and walked together for the ribbon cutting. Today. 10 years later, a rededication was at hand as an original train car that carried people to the concentration camps was brought over to the museum and placed as a memorial and remembrance to those that were a part of that horrific part of history. Dozens of dignitaries were at hand as were dozens of survivors of those camps to do the ribbon cutting. With the Diversity Choir singing and emotions high, it was eerie as raindrops fell sparadically like tears. This museum is trying to collect stories from survivors and veterans who may have played a part in the rescue of concentration camp victims. If you know of anyone who falls into ither of these catagories and is willing to do this please contact the museum or pm me. May I add if you have not visited the museum please do. It is free and will be an experience you will not soon forget.
