  1. Dairy Ashford was called Stiles Rd south of the DA/W Bellfort intersection. It was a dirt road until the mid/late 70's. In the mid 80's, they added in the curve that took it to the Spur 41 intersection with Alt 90, closed the railroad crossing and alt 90 intersection, and renamed the section of Stiles to Dairy Ashford, leaving just the end of Stiles where a few houses were/might still be. A few years later, they widened the road to it's current configuration. I took that road every day going to school at the D-Word.
  2. If by mixuse projects you mean parking lots, then, yes. I'd like to see more midrise apartments in the area- that will give that rail station more reason to exist!
  3. Construction has started on the St Agnes athletic facility where the Gillman dealerships used to be. So far, there's just trenches dug for plumbing, drainage/sewage
  4. here's one from today.... it will be finished by the end of the month, if not sooner
  5. nope.... not getting into a weewee measuring contest here.... I worked at Cardi's from '85 to when it shut down on 2.28.87. Fool's Gold moved out west, Cardi's took over the slot.
  6. Fool's Gold was at Fountainview, and became Cardi's. they moved it out west somewhere (dairy ashford, maybe?)
  7. you have to build something better than the Transco Tower to build a crown jewel ANYWHERE in this town!
  8. they're almost to the point where they can throw the debris in the Dumpster now
  9. any bland building they put there will look much better than Agnes Arnold Hall! They're putting an addition to the Moores School Of Music as far away from the original MSM as you can get and still be on the UH Campus... lol (I worked at the Moores Opera House when it first opened)
  10. ok, I finally got around to reopening my Flickr account... Here's the Sheraton deconstruction pictures I posted that A Minus stopped hotlinking, and one I took a few days ago.
  11. sounds about right... the Sheraton part is history now, all that remains is the Lincoln part
  12. That was the exact thinking when I lived across from West Oaks... the complex was VERY nice, but, they had to lower their rents to fill up the units to remain profitable, and that just made the place go downhill even faster. Multiply that by every apartment complex in the area, and you have West Oaks, 2011 version. i miss the 1984 version of West Oaks... I taught my best friend how to drive a standard in that parking lot, then taught my ex wife how to drive a stick there six years later
  13. the area around west oaks mall killed west oaks mall... I used to live across the street from that mall at different times, when the mall was new (and thriving), and about 3 years ago, when the mall started dying.
  14. i know this post is from 4 years ago, but, someone else dredged it up today according to the linked articles, Catacombs was at 3003 Post Oak, That's where they're about to build the new Skanska tower.
  15. pavilions isn't a shopping destination because all the stores here can be found at the mall around the corner from where you live. The only unique things are the HoB and Lucky Strike
  16. they reached the point where they had to remove the top anchors for the crane, so the crane was lowered by about 100'. In 3 months, this puppy will be gone.
  17. You wouldn't have happened to worked at a bowling alley in Sugar Land about 30 years ago, would you... I worked with a drummer who I coulda sworn said the name of his band was Southern Comfort....
  18. I think I'll post a picture every two weeks.... This one is from 3.31.11... They have cut off everything above where the safety nets were- I think that's five floors in a month's time. So, it 3 or 4 months, no more Sheraton Lincoln. ( j need to get a flikr acct... the people I'm using is more of a photoblag, so they kill hotlinks after a while...)
  19. ah, Texas Tapes and Records.... Many days of my misspent youth were wasted there, waiting in line for band autograph sessions. I can remember walking through the doors of that place as late as '86, when I decided that driving from Alief to Pasadena was a total waste of time, money, gas, life, etc just to buy a record that I could get for the same money at Cactus in Sharpstown (another store I miss!)
  20. Randall's didn't sell alcohol until Safeway bought the chain. A good way to get rich in the 70's and 80's was to open a liquor store next door to Randall's!
  21. The Halloweens my friends and I spent in Montrose in the early 80's were the best ever!!! I worked for an audio company in the mid 80's... We did two places in Montrose- lights and sound in a lesbian bar called Crystal's (I remember it being north of Westheimer, maybe off of Fairview, but, the memory is fuzzy), and we put a sound system in a place on Lovett called Rooster's, which became Mothers. I used to have a bad-assed cigarette lighter- it was waterproof, you wore it as a pendant around your neck. After we finished a service call at Rooster's, About halfway home, I realized I left my lighter at Rooster's... My boss was like, "forget about it, man, it's gone, we aren't going back there unless we're being paid"... lol (and you audiophiles would FREAK OUT if you ever saw what is driving the sound system at Numbers.....)
