Heard anything concerning ""old " city  council members? Will any of those segue into other jobs with Whitmire administration?

Not really, but there has been news of the HPD Scandals, which blew up recently.

  2. Deepest condolences to the family of Fred Faour, who passed away on March 14th. My thoughts are with the Faour family including his colleagues at ESPN 97.5 Houston.

Yeah,  it’s not unusual for a new administration to bring in his own people.  I’m curious if Whitmire believes there was this much incompetence/complacency with Turner’s administration or if he is just rewarding his supporters.  As long as he’s been in politics he must owe a lot of favors to supporters.

Let’s see how he does.  He hates pedestrians apparently!  😂   Does he hate potholes, broken pipes, and criminals?

Eventually Whitmire will get rid of all of the Turner holdovers.

Note: I take 1604 every single time I go to my mother's house or to the hill country. It saves about 20 minutes and is 15 miles shorter since IH 10 dips down the closer it gets to downtown San Antonio.  Plus it has a hairpin turn when it starts heading north in the downtown area. I have been hoping they would add more lanes for decades since 1604 was only a two lane highway and portion of it was single lanes only.

Following this discussion thread very closely with intriguing interest!

John's giving me major mid-90s/early 00's Houston mayor vibes.

If you view Houston from the typical older Memorial resident's lense, I feel like alot of his decisions make sense. I met him through the years at the burger place in the memorial's golf club. He's probably going to look to "build partnerships" with the corporations to sponsor stuff, which will be fine, but their upper management is going to be like "hey we really hate xyz about X part of Houston" and it will leave alot of Houstonians miffed as to why things are changing that weren't explicitly part of his platform.

Noticed Whitmire is keeping Finner as HPD Police Chief & Pena as HFD Fire Chief. But for how long will they keep their jobs at HPD & HFD respectively ? 🤔

The new Outlaw television network is now on KEHO-LD/Houston (on 32.7), and KUVM-CD/Missouri City (on 34.6).

it describes itself as "classic western movies and TV series."  So far, "classic" seems to mean "old, but new enough to be in color."

Between Outlaw on 32.7 and 34.6; Grit on KPXB/Conroe (49.8), and KFTH-DT/Alvin (on 67.3); GetTV on KPRC-TV/Houston (on 2.5) and KFTH-DT/Alvin (on 67.2); regular weekend western movies on KTXH/Houston (20.2); and the regular western shows on the KYAZ/Katy-KPRC-TV/Houston MeTV/MeTV+ melange, no one with a television should ever want for cowboy shows in Houston.

    Sounds quite intriguing!

I'm curious to see how the mayor-elect reshapes the Houston Housing Authority. With all of the controversy surrounding the HHA and Mayor Turner, will Whitmire clean house or do we get more of the same from this group? Given the budget shortfalls that have been identified, and the billions in property value taken off tax rolls via the HHA and Turner, I will be eager to see if there is material change in how the HHA operates.

We'll find out soon enough. Has Sticky Fingers Turner congratulated Whitmire yet ?

I actually wasn’t aware of Castillo’s sexual preference until I read about it here on HAIF but the flyer didn’t doom Reyes-Revilla’s campaign.  She was the underdog in this race by a long shot.  She was never going to win.

Fox 26 KRIV-TV Houston had a news segment about the controversy.

All of Tegna's stations on DirectTv/ AT&T U-Verse have gone off the air nationwide as of Thurs. night. They are in a dispute about the fees Tegna wants and Direct/AT&T U-Verse are willing to pay.

"Some sports fans in the Houston area might have to leave their homes to watch two of this weekend's biggest football games.

For DirecTV and AT&T U-Verse customers, KHOU 11 went off the air Thursday night as a result of an ongoing contract dispute between DirecTV and Tegna, the company who owns the channel. This is an especially significant development from a local sports standpoint, as KHOU is the Houston affiliate for CBS, which will air both the Houston Texans' game against the Denver Broncos on Sunday and Saturday's SEC championshipbetween Georgia and Alabama.

"We are negotiating with DirecTV, but thus far, they have refused to reach a fair, market-based agreement to keep our station on DIRECTV and AT&T U-verse," Tegna said in a statement on KHOU's website. DirectTV responded with a statement of its own, which read "Just as they have done with several other video distributors, TEGNA has once again forced its programming out of DIRECTV and U-verse homes and businesses. As one of the nation’s largest broadcasters, TEGNA is doing this to extract double-digit annual rate increases from customers in 52 metro regions across the U.S."

Sensing more house-cleaning at CBS 11 KHOU-TV Houston soon.

This runoff was Castillo's to lose, but Reyes-Revilla, likely desperate to gain some ground on him, sent out an ill-advised mailer containing an anti-gay dogwhistle (contrasting a picture of her and her family with one of Castillo and his husband/partner). After several high-profile endorsers called on her to apologize, she instead doubled down with a robocall that started with "Did you know that Mario Castillo is gay?" Predictably, this led to endorsements being unceremoniously pulled and a drubbing nearly as bad as the one Whitmire inflicted on SJL.

My cousin mentioned the mailing controversy that doomed Reyes-Revilla's campaign.

    Glad Buzzbee lost.

Maybe he'll get the message: Nobody wants him in political office ever. However, I think Buzbee will plot something in 2027 or 2031.

He can't...this is the point where he has to do the back-scratching.

My cousin told me it's going to be raining this weekend: especially on Saturday: which will hurt turnout.

Doubling-down on Whitmire being the next Mayor of Houston & wouldn't be shocked if he wins by double digits.

I think everyone is way off base about all of this. I think if we want to understand what the next few years of Houston politics will look like, then we should look to Los Angeles. The new ballot initiative that allows city council members to place items on the agenda is going to make city council positions much more political and higher visibility. And as Houston becomes increasingly Latino, there’s going to be a lot of anxiety about representation, particularly for African-Americans. If you look at Los Angeles, there has been a lot of recent tension, anxiety and racism about representation on city Council. We’re already seeing shades of this with the most recent elections for court of commissioners at the county. In general, I think we should look to larger trends in similar cities.

As a native Austinite, I remember when we had our city council reform.  City Council and city councilman went from being generally anonymous to mini celebrities. I believe some combination of Los Angeles-style tension, and Austin-style attention seeking will be the future of Houston politics.

Let's not forget about the special diet of Good Old Gentrification & driving folks OUT of Houston for good.

She's a Republican political consultant/PR flack who is currently a staffer in the Texas Senate. So I wouldn't expect her to be favorably inclined toward Hollins, to say the least.

Former Houston Mayor Annise Parker (D) & former Houston City Councilman At-Large 5 Jack Christie (R) endorsing Whitmire in the Houston Mayoral Runoff election.

I give you credit for calling the Houston City Controller runoff.  You also blew the call on Houston City Council District D: Incumbent District D City Councilwoman Carolyn Evans-Shabazz (D) wins reelection in massive landslide.  She is also in a runoff!

I based my opinion on gut.  I never saw a single ad for Sanchez.  He was as surprised as anyone to be in a runoff given the campaign funding discrepancies.

I expect Whitmire and Hollins to win easily in December, regardless of endorsements.

I was surprised that Evans-Shabazz missed out on winning outright in District D: I think Provost is to blame for that one, who needs to get the hint that NOBODY wants her on the Houston City Council & go away.

I also agree with you on Whitmire easily trouncing SJL in the Mayoral runoff election. Big question is whether Sanchez can pull off a miracle in the City Controller runoff election & according to Jennifer Knesek on Instagram, she does NOT like Hollins at all.

  15. @steve1363 We now have Runoffs for Houston Mayor, Houston City Controller & several City Council seats set for December 9th I think.

Mayor: Doubling-down on Whitmire winning this very easily. I've got to think Garcia, Kaplan, Kahn & Co., will be pressured to endorse Whitmire.

City Controller: I called it! Runoff between Hollins (D) vs Sanchez (R).
