  1. Actually, Texas is home to 102 companies from the Fortune 1000 list; there are 56 Texas based companies on the Fortune 500 list.
  2. Big D is really getting some traction. Slfunk, I dont remember, had you already shared about 3J Development LLC rennovations:
  3. They're just getting a slow start, that's all. Go Spurs.
  4. Perhaps the former Astroworld property could become a municipally owned park and exhibition center along the lines of Hemisfair Plaza in San Antonio and/or Fair Park in Dallas. Deconstruct the amusement park and construct an Olympic staging area.
  5. It's going to be really interesting to follow what happens to downtown Dallas during the next couple of years. A lot of things are coming together to invigorate a new and thoroughly urban environment in the North Texas suburban population center. As Houston and Dallas both grow deeper urban roots, I think a lot of the energy spent on the rivalry between the cities will be transfered to exploration. While I think it will be years before either metro has enough "city" to keep the attention of a serious urban dweller, proximity to each other will help satisfy the itch.
  6. Refrigeration may the hershey bar possible!! Chocleterias seem like a safe investment/franchise trend for the Southwest/West, that's a good one I hope someone makes happens. It would be interesting to get a cocoa buzz.... I kinda like the idea of shorter highrises clustering around Williams Tower, it's such a handsome building and I dont particularly care for too much view obstruction.
  7. I agree that promoting Galveston's history should have some influence on the nature of the major destinations found on the island, and that's a big part of why I think an amusement park would be ideally located there. Galveston has always been a resort/tourist destination, and a bunch of roller coasters next to the beach reinforces the regional appeal. In my mind, Galveston is as logical a place to board a cruise ship as to visit any one of several amusement/theme parks. I think the character of the city is kinetic and would suffer if preserved as a museum novelty for observation. My biggest concern, really, is that competitors of Six Flags will just let this entertainment destination slip out of the market instead of committing the big money to build a new park anywhere in Houston Metro. With Fiesta Texas and Sea World only 2-3 hours away from the bulk of the metro population, just a couple years without the convenience of local destination could make the road trip to a Bexar County theme park normal for Houston families and youth groups. Spending the weekend in San Antonio is already a pretty sweet set-up, Astroworld customers will be very welcomed. I've often speculated that the next mega-theme park built in Texas will be in the San Antonio area. Although closing Astroworld really sucks, it's also a latent business invitation to concentrate theme parks in the Hill Country.
  8. Soon to be Arlington Cowboys. I'm just wondering when the name's going to change to The Jerry Jones Cowboys. Generally, it's probably a better community benefit to have the payroll of thousands of skilled laborers than the payroll and 'prestige' of corporate headquarters. My amatuer observations count three Fortune 500 corporate headquarters relocations to Dallas County this year, or at least relocation confirmations - I dont know if they will show up as Texas companies next year or not, but all that vacant office space (aka excellent value for the money) is really getting some attention. The advantages of managing operations from the Texas Triangle is becoming evident to a much larger audience and will expand the region's global influence. The reach around the world from the Port of Houston is a primary foundation. Trans-Texas cargo highways will futher centralize NAFTA underwritten product management in Dallas and will unite and maximize trading partenerships. The manufacture of aircraft capable of flying half way around the world has finally opened up Texas to nonstop flights with European and Asian business centers.
  9. Ya, I always kinda chuckle when reviewing the Fortune 500 listing with "Exxon - Irving, TX."
  10. I think Galveston is the ideal location for an amusement park to replace AstroWorld.
  11. The GA Dome really does need an update, and I agree that tilts the 2009 vote toward Atlanta. Most of the owners will recognize the need to reward with a Superbowl cash cow any host city which builds a nicer stadium. It's important to the business relationship between team and host city that municipal financial contrubitions are acknowledged by the League through a weeks worth of wintertime tourism and media exposure. It's important to the League's business that host cities continue financial contribution to stadium upgrades. Whole lotta back scratching.
  12. Inside the loop. They're planning four or five 20-something towers for the whole development - 300,000 - 400,000 sq for 7-11 offices, condos, retail. I'm sure every detail will be attended, but it sure would be nice to get another building in Dallas over 500'.
  13. Same here. I hope the ZaZa folks operate this hotel true to its classy history. Putting the preditory and pretentious atmosphere of the McKinney Ave hot spot in the Warwick would tarnish the charm of the place, to me. Similar location maybe, but different structure. Putting a Houston twist into another ZaZa Hotel is a perfect match. I really like the idea of an immerging boutique hotel chain rooted in Texas. ZaZa Dallas, Houston, Austin, San Antonio - let the brand simmer for a couple of years to become something of a uniquely Texan upscale urban boutique hotel atmosphere bla bla bla.
  14. Last night, I was drunk, and I thoroughly enjoyed a sack of Krystal burgers, six of 'em. They have pretty good chili cheese fries, but anything from Krystal is best consumed when drunk.
  15. Another thing favoring Atlanta is that the owner of the Falcons made possible the new Aquarium by a $250 million donation. [Atlanta's High Museum of Art, also nearby, is currently undergoing a larger expansion than Museum Asia House adds in Houston (however the High Museum pales in comparison); and a state of the art "world class" symphony Hall is under progress too. Probably in any blow by blow comparison of civic improvements between Atlanta and Houston would find the cities relatively "equal", but the Falcons owner may have a stronger hand within the league - I dont know.... I just hope Houston hosts superbowls enough to pay back the public investment.
  16. Ya, I guess the MoMA has more art to display, a whole lot more!!! I've got big hopes, though, for the future of museum collections in Houston. Typically, it takes a several decades before collectors relinquish the goods to public museums, Houston museums will have a very steady and gacious stream of high art into the public galleries.
