Houston's fortunes rise and fall with the energy economy.  Austin is tech-focused, which nobody thinks is going to crash anytime soon.  It makes raising money for large projects much easier.

I thought tech was crashing. Facebook and it's parent company Meta, among other tech stocks, have been imploding over the past year, they've lost like 75% of their market cap. Microsoft, Peleton, and Amazon have all seen huge losses. They're calling this the "Dot Com Bust 2.0."

Is there really this much need/demand to build this tall in Austin?   Hmmm

    Some other factors:

downtown multi family occupancy dropped in the last year.  One of only 2 Austin sub markets to drop.

There are approx 4800 units under construction or in lease-up downtown ( that of course doesn’t count the proposed buildings such as the topic of this thread.)

At most-recent absorption rates, the currently-under-construction/lease-up units give downtown Austin a 3-5 1/2 year supply, again, without counting the recently-proposed/not-yet-under-construction buildings.

The 4,800 new units constitute approximately 40% increase in supply for downtown Austin . . .

    Sounds like they're overbuilding.

  3. A little off topic, and I couldn't find a thread for this but, does anyone know whats going on at the lot that used to hold a Goodyear tire shop, next to Fiesta, on the block just south of the Ventana apartments? I only got a quick glance driving by but it looked like a huge pit was being excavated, maybe for a building foundation??

Edit: Nevermind, looks like this will be the parking garage

  4. It's too bad the park didn't take up the entire block. It's such a Houston thing for a tiny park in Downtown have a big parking lot attached to it.

I wonder if the DRA tried to acquire that parcel but couldn't, or if they intentionally left it there because of Houston's ridiculous minimum parking requirements.

Well that was obnoxious. Obviously if you're suggesting a skyscraper there then you're suggesting getting rid of the park. And no, I don't think it's a good spot for a new skyscraper. I think it's a good spot for a renovated park.

    That's a terrible idea. 🙄

Are you suggesting replacing a park with a skyscraper? No, that's a terrible idea. Now, adding a supertall as part of Phase 2 of the post office site on the other hand...

Get your panties out of a bunch, Francis.

No, I'm not suggesting getting rid of the park, although it's only used as a gigantic homeless urinal and nobody would miss it anyway....

I'm saying visually and aesthetically, having a skyscraper in that position would be beautiful, it's a perfect spot for one. If it offends your delicate senses that much, pretend there was no "park" there and then imagine what having a beautiful skyscraper there would add to the skyline.

Anyone else think Tranquility Park would make a prime spot for a brand new, modern skyscraper? Something stunning and bold, like Piano's "The Shard", that would give Houstons "front door" skyline a facelift. Its actually a superblock, so you could fit more than one high rise there, but one signature skyscraper there would be awesome.

Might be the Maxim crane that attempted to take the Camden McGowen midtown tower crane but got cancelled due to the high winds.

Yes in fact, that was us. I got to help out on that job, it was lots of fun!

  9. Im not sure because I haven't been downtown in a while, but I heard my buddy is going downtown in the 500 ton with luffer this weekend to tear down a Bellows tower crane. Does anyone know where this might be?

Don't know if I'll be there on the job or not, but if I go I'll take some pictures or ask him to take a few.
