  1. Thanks for your recommendation. Is he a licensed, Master electrician?
  2. Thank you for the recommendation. I called them, left a message and they never called me back. Interestingly, I saw the same complaint about them elsewhere. Don't know why they didn't call me back. Thanks. I will give him a call.
  3. Thank you for the recommendation. I just called them and they said they no longer do that kind of work, as it takes too long. They prefer shorter jobs. Oh well. Back to looking for someone who will/can do it.
  4. We just bought a house in the Heights. There is a little bit of knob-and-tube wiring remaining. It seems to be functioning just fine, and only runs things like sockets where you plug in lamps. We'd still like to get it replaced, as insulating around it in the attic can be a challenge and we'd feel a little safer if it was upgraded. Does anyone have an electrician they can recommend? Someone who is comfortable dealing with knob-and-tube wiring would be great. Has anyone had this kind of work done? We would appreciate any recommendations. Thanks.
  5. Thank you for all your replies. I can't remember which one our agent didn't recommend. I think it might have been American Home Shield, ironically since two people here seem to think it's okay, but I can't remember for sure. Appreciate everyone's input.
  6. We are in the process of buying a 1930's era, pier and beam house. It's been somewhat redone, but not everything is updated. As part of the contract, the sellers will pay for a home warranty for a year. We don't know anything about home warranty companies and aren't sure who to go with. Our agent sent us several names of companies, and did tell us one she wouldn't recommend, but outside of that we don't have much information. I did find this website: http://www.homewarrantyreviews.com, but I don't know of the reviews are spammed or if it's accurate. Does anyone have any experience with this website or a home warranty company reviewed by it? Is it accurate? We would appreciate any thoughts or recommendations on home warranty companies, especially if you've used one here in Houston. Thanks!
  7. I've been a member of the Downtown Y for about eight years and I'm really sad to see them building a new one and leaving the old one. They did surveys asking members what they were looking for from the Y, and they also did look at revamping the old building, but eventually decided to go with the new one. I remember when they made the big announcement and put up the posters. Sad day. I agree with the other posters about the new building. It looks nice enough, and would probably be fine in a suburban area, but it just looks all wrong for downtown. It does looks big and loud and echo-y. The big entryway area seems like wasted space to me. Maybe it's just the drawings, but I don't like the feel of it. Also, the pool seems small. It does look like they'll have some separate pools for other things - kids, maybe, or aquatic exercise classes perhaps - so maybe they won't need as many lanes for lap swimmers since they won't all be competing for the same space. But it looks small from what I've seen. I hope they can find a way to save the old building, or even just the facade, as someone else suggested. It's a really gorgeous building. I might have to take some photos before it closes too.
  8. First time. But would rather buy the right house than buy something just to get the tax credit. Looking for the holy grail with all the things we want. Pretty sure it doesn't exist, except at exhorbitant prices.
  9. I have a friend who has lived on 14th in Norhill and she says it's not that noisy. It probably affects property values, so you might be able to find something a little cheaper on the slightly busier streets.
  10. Do you still think this will happen inside the loop? We are hoping to buy before the end of the year. I noticed mortgate prices inched up today and wondered how that might affect things.
