It is already affecting traffic. Right now, it is probably due to rubbernecking. But, we can look for slowdowns in this area from now on. The worst part is that this section of I-45 was already a bottleneck.

By the way, a tower crane is being erected on the I-45 feeder. I don't know if this construction is XOM's, Springwoods Village, or a third party. I suspect the latter.

Anyone who knows the Exxon culture would find this story hard to believe, even at a much lower transplant cost. Exxon is run like a military organization, complete with ultra-redundency in their systems, and ultra-conservatism in their policies and actions. They refuse to put their name on sports arenas because they believe it is a waste of money. It is extremely unlikely that a $1 million tree transplant would be approved at this company...at least for the reason stated in the story. Exxon is not Enron. Never was. Never will be.

You're not looking close enough. The curb cuts are in place, and the sidewalk stubs are poured. However, the sidewalks along the street are not poured yet, presumably to be poured when the buildings are built.

Not only did many of us predict these hideous additions in this very thread, s3mh blithely assured us that this would not happen. Here he is now acting as if construction has morphed into this phase, and that it is a good thing!

The reason for the ordinance was originally an effort to limit the increasing property values due to new construction in the neighborhood. Once that reason went over like a lead balloon, the campaign was retooled, and the reason stated was to save the old bungalows. The claim was made (but never believed) that historic districts increase property values. The only thing for sure when listening to a historic district proponent explaining historic districts is that their reasons will be complete fabrications. Since the previous poster did not even live in the Heights during all of this time, you can bet that his reasons are made up.

I am sure that you are an expert on this industry. However, most of these dealers sell on a weekly payment plan with high interest rates. It is nearly impossible for them to "get upside down on a couple of car deals", as they will have the car repo'd before it is a month overdue. Many even put ignition locks on them. If a borrower gets behind, the car locks up. I suspect that you just made this up. -
I love those guys! Because I know who they are taking that money from. And it ain't historic district opponents.

Since you believe that historic preservation must include supporting government intrusion, without regard to the viability or value of the government involvement, I will proudly wear your accusation of "anti-preservationist". Your statement is poison to the preservation movement. You explicitly claim that those of us who purchase old homes are idiots who must be forbidden from preserving our homes without government regulation. It should be obvious to you why there are so many opponents to your views (as opposed to preservation), but you appear too narcissistic to listen. This is why few of us waste any time attempting to explain it to you. You've made it clear that only repeal of the ordinance will get you out of our homes. And that is exactly my intention. By the way, there are no turtles in my yard.

Interesting that 3 historic district opponents all have their work published as how to do it right. The person most in favor of the ordinance has not remodeled. Something weird about that.

Absolutely. Ever notice that most of these "preservationists" never tell us what they are doing. They only tell us what we cannot do. The reason is that they do little or nothing.

Actually, the City budget is $3.9 Billion, of which $2.0 Billion is for the general fund. Over the course of 10 years, we are talking about in excess of $20 Billion of general fund budgets. $6 million into $20 Billion is 0.03%. That's about 2 Starbucks cappucinos on a median budget in a year. And, we are not losing Walmart's taxes. Walmart, Ainbinder and everyone else still pays their taxes. Some of that tax money goes to pay off infrastructure improvements. I realize that Leonard is a fan of driving over potholes, but I like the repaved streets and sidewalks that I got out of the deal. This is all a bunch of manufactured outrage that less than a dozen residents express. In a city of over 2 million people, that's an even smaller percentage than the 380 is to the budget. This is a small price to pay for my one stop shopping. Too bad Leonard cannot enjoy it.

jetober, The manner in which you posted that email makes it look entirely like you were the author. Therefore, you deserve every bit of accusation and assumption delivered by Ms. Kelman. In fact, hiding behind the email of someone else is even worse, in my opinion, than if you were the author of the email yourself. If you have a problem with Ms. Kelman or her use of the appeal process, then let's hear it. That's what this forum is for, and clearly, by posting that email on a public forum, you have no problem with SOME THINGS being made public. And, if you'd like to send ME a message, you are more than welcome to use the private message function. I'd be happy to tell you a bit more of what my opinion of your tactics on this forum are.

BTW, just got home from Walmart. For those who are not afraid to shop there, their fruit and veggies blow every other store away lately. It isn't even close. For the rest of you, I hear Jeff Skilling is getting out of prison early and becoming Walmart's new CEO.

Leonard, why should Walmart pay $12.50 an hour, but Apple should only pay $8.25 (or even less in Houston)? Is it because you like Apple, but not Walmart? For that matter, why should Walmart pay $12.50 but not Target?
