What I found interesting on the HAHC site was the fact that 9 of the 13 members on that board are appointed by the mayor. True enough, there are qualifications that have to be met, but still..... I also was disappointed in her remark about the 'eyesores' as well as her almost condescending demeanor when answering some questions.

Are there any numbers on how many times the HAHC has exercised their right to name a district "historic" without input from that community? Surely they would consider the wishes of the residents.... That is my fear now. Idylwood would fit that criteria without a doubt and if there is no OPT OUT as has been stated elsewhere in this thread, I think we would have an uprising here in the east end. It looked as if our council member was looking out for one of the larger neighborhoods in his district.

After watching that portion of the session, it seems to me that several of the council members were confused about what they were going to vote on. 37 and 37a both carried with each getting one opposing vote from Bradford. It was very clear what Parker wanted, just looking at her body language and facial expressions. Thanks for posting that link.

Are there any old photos of the M&M Bldg....er UH-D floating around here somewhere? I used to work downtown and could see this building from our office but the perspective was from the side and not the view as seen in this picture. It was completely different in the 60's and 70's. Love this shot though.

OK, I've reread some of the posts, and I now change my question: Does HCAC = HAHC ? I know what HAHC is but is there a HCAC involved here?
-
What is HCAC?

isuredid....is there a date on that postcard? I was in high school and a friend's older sister took us there once in the early 60's. I'm not remembering the wagon wheels. -

Thanks so much for all this information, it's amazing to me that there is so much "out there". The railroad link to the Pasadena St. house makes much more sense to me now. The H&TC (to Hearne) and the HEWT (to Lufkin)were later part of the Southern Pacific. I just couldn't place the Union Pacific in Houston as early as 1910. Union Pacific did acquire the Missouri Pacific but that was much later. But I agree, it probably does explain the 'railroad owner' comments. Now, was it the same Gus who owned the nursery? -
That was my initial thought too. Back then, if someone wanted to shop a chain, they drove on down to Meyerland Plaza and Penney's. Or out to Gulfgate with Sakowitz and Joske's. Westbury Square was there to experience a 'different' sort of shopping. It had a boutique, or one of a kind feel about it before we called them boutiques.

The Post Office has already started downsizing big time. Being a sometimes ebay seller, I sometimes go to the post office. Both the Lawndale and Broadway stations have lost clerks. Guy at Broadway said several of them took the 'buyout'. So now, both those stations are even slower than they used to be. Oh, joy.

It was actually the lead story on Ch. 13 at 6 pm last night. Miya Shay was there and basically, HSA voted to consider the possibility of being the manager/landlord for the stadium. It should be on KTRK website. Boils down to more waiting games.

Bob Allen on Channel 13 just said that per a source "inside City Hall",the reason Dynamo Stadium did not get done sooner was because El Franco Lee and Mayor Bill White did not "get along". I just could not understand why Lee had not put the vote on CC agenda. I guess it makes sense now.

I've been wondering why El Franco Lee was holding out. Wonder if there's more to come.

Like JLWM said, it's at Barker Cypress. Park 10 is the large business complex there. I think you may have missed the very opening of the video. Key to your question was the date....1985 That entire area out I-10 west is very different now. -
LOL...of course you are correct but I gotta tell you, the ribs and brisket helped to buffer my feelings of guilt for not being at the rally. The ice cold Shiner helped too. ;>)

And the MKT had the Texas Bluebonnet on their railroad china. It's very sought after, the original that is. Some railroad china patterns have been reproduced and the MKT's Bluebonnet is one of them. -
Wow, didn't expect that. I can think of many "other plans" that might take priority. Like a 75th birthday celebration for an out of town relative.....sheesh

Our civic club forwarded an email from Steve Parker, President of Super Neighborhood 64 & 88, Greater Eastwood, Lawndale and Wayside stating that on Saturday, 2-20 (tomorrow), there will be a Dynamo Stadium Rally........PART AS FOLLOWS "Join the Dynamo Supporters' Alliance to show your support for economic growth in the East End Saturday, February 20, 2010 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Rusk & Dowling If you are on Facebook, join the Alliance and this event!" ....... Just thought I'd pass this along, if I didn't already have other plans, I'd try to get by there myself.

The Miya Shay video is now on the Channel 13 website. Sounds like County Judge Ed Emmett is ready to get things done for a stadium. From what Parker had said several days ago, the city has done their part, we're just waiting for the county to ante up. I find it interesting that El Franco Lee has been silent during all this.

Yes, Mrs. Garcia is the Harris County Commissioner for Pct. 2 and El Franco Lee has Pct. 1. The proposed Dynamo site falls in both these districts but apparently Garcia is the one that contacted the Eastwood Civic Association. The email I rec'd asked that residents appear in tomorrow's (Tuesday 2-9-10) Commissioner's Court session to be "heard". From what I understand, the county has yet to get on board monetarily for the Dynamo downtown location. As to the need for a new city/county inmate processing center, I thought that the CJC built downtown about 10 years ago was supposed to have an inmate processing center in it.

Is that the old Burgheim's Drug Store? If so, it was an icon when I worked downtown in the 70's-80's and 90's. They had a very good lunch counter too, something that was hard to find back then. Loved that 'witch's hat'on the roof.

The Eastwood Civic Assn. along with the two Super Neighborhoods that serve our area sent a mass email to residents asking that we make our wishes known to all the city and county officials. The aim is to convince the powers that we prefer the stadium over the jail. The interesting part is, according to the email, that Ms. Garcia said she was unaware that residents actually supported the stadium. Additionally, Ms. Garcia was UNAWARE of any plans for a jail or inmate processing facility "at least in terms of a county facility". Garcia also said the City had not contacted the County about the stadium since the new administration took office.
